When new Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. talked on Monday about the team’s determination to retain Draymond Green, he wasn’t just speaking in platitudes, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Appearing on SportsCenter on Monday evening (YouTube link), Wojnarowski says the Warriors and Green have strong mutual interest in working out a new contract agreement after the forward decided to turn down his player option for 2023/24.
“These are two sides who very much want to get a deal done,” Wojnarowski said. “Draymond and (agent) Rich Paul, they’re not really posturing here and threatening that they’re going to go somewhere else.”
Wojnarowski went on to say that there would be “great options” on the open market for Green if he does want to seek a change of scenery. The 33-year-old’s hometown Pistons will have cap space, and there are over-the-cap contenders who would have interest in trying to negotiate a sign-and-trade with the Warriors, according to Wojnarowski. But for the time being, it doesn’t sound like Green is eager to explore other destinations.
“I think there’s certainly a desire on both sides to stay together. They want each other,” Woj said. “I think (for) Draymond Green, the idea of continuing with Steph Curry and with Klay Thompson and certainly (head coach) Steve Kerr, I think it means the world to him. It’s just a matter of negotiation. Is it a four-year deal? Is it a three-year deal?
“I don’t sense at all any real sense on either side that this could get sideways. It could happen, he becomes a free agent. But I think these sides are destined to reunite.”
Green’s scoring contributions remained limited in 2022/23, as he averaged single-digit points per game (8.5) for a fifth straight season. However, he’s a talented offensive play-maker (6.8 APG) and one of the NBA’s best defenders, having earned All-Defensive honors for an eight time this spring.
The player option that Green turned down was worth $27.6MM, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be pushing for a larger 2023/24 salary in a new contract. He and the Warriors could negotiate a multiyear deal that reduces his cap hit for next season but gives him a more significant overall guarantee. That would help keep the team’s rising payroll in check for ’23/24, at least to some extent.
Even after they resolve Green’s contract situation, the Warriors will have to make some major roster decisions this offseason. Jordan Poole and Jonathan Kuminga are among the players who have been cited as possible trade candidates, while Thompson will be extension-eligible as he enters a contract year.
Dremond will retire a Warrior and go to the Hall.
He is the headache they know.
profound!
Draymond demands max contract
Lakers have money
He can give Lakers 50% discount at $100mm
dude stop commenting on financials that you clearly do not understand.
Sillivan is a horrible poster on here but at least they arent a racist.
huh? why would he do that?
8 points a game and people call him a hall of famer because he is a glue guy. Comical
you do realize there is more to the game than ppg? casual.
You have to absolutely dominate in other areas of the game to make the Hall of Fame if you put up mediocre offensive numbers. Draymond does not. You can’t rely on him to guard big time players of similar size. Being a really good pest/agitator doesn’t put you in the hall.
Given that he’s a 4 time champion and all star, DPOY, with 2 All-NBA, and 8 all-defense selections with four first-team selections, he’s already a good bet to make the hall on awards alone. Add in his impact on the game with the way people evaluate non-scorers and his college accolades, and it’s more likely than not he ends up in the hall. Not first ballot imo, but he’ll get there.
exactly, amk is so wrong on this. He not only handles guys his own size, he is always on the other teams big
Imagine comping Draymond fn Green with anyone, lol absolute casuality
Draymond is a unicorn, he gets his own rules. He wins titles and dominates without stats, you would see that if you watched a single game (you havent).
But also he put up 30 points in a Game 7 of the Finals, so stop lying all over please.
obviously this guy has zero clue what he’s talking about. Ever watched a Warriors game? or read an article that you comment on?
Personally I would have traded the guy a day after the punch
Or maybe get rid of the issue aka jordan poole. You don’t get rid of the person who reacts. You get rid of the problem. Life lesson for everyone.
I’m sorry, but what? I don’t like Jordan Poole and I think he’s overrated, but seriously? Poole didn’t grab Draymond’s arm and make Draymond hit him. Unless Poole pulled a Marco Matterazzi, I really can’t see Draymond’s actions as justified. And I doubt whatever comments he made were anywhere near as bad as those. Maybe Poole made an arse of himself, but Draymond’s reaction was out of line. The fact that he got no punishment for it is just bad team management. You hold your players accountable for their actions.
You got 13 other guys that DIDNT suckerpunch “the problem”.
Why is it ok that Draymond “reacted”.
They win championships with green, they win championships without poole. Case closed.
As a warrior fan I could care less what happens. If he resigns that is good if he doesn’t Warriors saved a lot of money on future taxes.
They also won championships with Poole!
first, it’s not a sucker punch if you knock a guy on his ass while standing in front of him. Second, you have no idea what was said to make him punch him. Third, the Warriors don’t tell the media anything internal but the rumor is that he was heavily fined. how is that no punishment? You guys are just soft. Men get in tussles with their workmates all the time, sometimes you get knocked out for your words, sometimes you knock your friend out for his words. Poole was already soft, now using that as a reason you had a bad year and not your lack of effort in the gym (by the way, one of the reasons for the team’s frustration with him) shows he is more soft than I thought.
The rumor was that Poole talked about Draymonds wife and/or kids, that gets a grown man punched, thats why none of the players took a side, because Draymond went too far but also, not really, that was a deserved reaction, and everyone moved on. Jordan Poole has improved his PPG every year and this one was no exception.
The larger issue around here is that GSW are going to keep everyone and perhaps improve in ways no one saw coming, and that terrifies the league, because GSW really is just about putting the right guys around Curry, and they have those. They just need to keep the 2-way spots empty, or used on only 7 footers, give Kerr no choice but to play real NBA lineups, not 5-guard ones or whatever dumb ish he is trying and failing to do.
Yeah Draymond is a cancer that only the Warriors would be willing to put up with…
Draymond is a 4x champion* that only the warriors are willing to put up with… there i fixed it for you.
Hey @Scarlett666 you seem to not understand what “a cancer” means in this case.
In future, please leave all “clubhouse cancer” talk to those who have no rings, because that’s why it was created, the players are a “cancer” to winning titles. So lets keep the meaning the same, Draymond Green is an elite HOF player, and you are a mere racist.
The Warriors are destined to overpay for Draymond…
After the punch no team in the NBA would give him more than 10m a year..
Do you shoot up the copium, or smoke it?
Draymond is a better player than the perception of him on this site, but he’s also a worse player than the perception of Warriors fans, imo. Very good and versatile defender and he’s a good playmaker with above-average court vision, but he also turns the ball over and fouls a lot, and he’s a mediocre offensive threat. Good overall player, but he has clear limitations, kind of like a Center who isn’t good a free throws and thus has to be taken out in crunch time. He can’t lead a team and won’t be a needle-mover by himself, but put him in the right situation (namely, an offense that depends on off-ball movement and can afford his limited offense), and his value skyrockets.
He -was- a mediocre offensive threat from 2020-2022, but last year he rebounded and wasn’t a negative at all on offense, once again a credit to his game in isolating his shooting issues and fixing them.
I question your fence sitting take “He’s not bad, but also GSW fans overrate him” yessir play all angles so youre always right! You really are smart!!!
More like Draymond is “destined” for jail
Careful LFG. You can’t criticize Draymond. It’s racist.
Haven’t actually seen anyone say that before, Will. Plenty of (somewhat unwarranted) character defense, but nobody accusing racism.
Eon, all of the deleted comments in the other thread were just that. A couple of people called Draymond “a thug.” StephRetires complained that that it was racist. It’s bizarre.
@willclarksfalsetto Yeah I know. Its not like I’m calling Lebron or Giannis a thug, these guys are pretty much the cream of the crop on the NBA. Now if we are talking thugs, I’d put Draymond, Miles Bridges, maybe Ja Morant, and older players like Gilbert Arenas, Stephen Jackson, and Metta World-Peace
Guess we have different connotations of the word “thug”. In hockey, they call these kinds of guys “goons”, the types of players who are instigators or easily egged into a fight
Some of the guys you list are certainly that, others not so much
I think I’d say Morant is a moron, a misguided child who is taken with the idea of “thuggish” behavior on the street, but in a hoops sense, it doesn’t fit
Huh, news to me. Guess the trolls have to troll.
A 4 year descending contract could work. Start in the 20s end in the teens.
3/70 with a player option. give him the same length as Steph.
Draymond has been the Warriors (enforcer) since day 1. He’s not that tough when someone punches back or play as dirty as him!
What do you mean? When has anyone ever punched him back? Just lying, making stuff up because you hate he beat your fave team. Coward.
Trade Poole and kuminga for Siakam or KP!
yes! add the first and try an pry Anunoby too.
this thread got the whole tool shed commenting on it, i see. latent prejudices, check. ignorant, misinformed biases, check.
Sillivan should be a g.m. somewhere!
Warriors are in a difficult situation. Understand that it is almost impossible to find someone Draymond’s size who can handle the ball, pass, defend well and rebound well. Warriors should let Draymond go. Team is too old. Warriors won four championships. If the Warriors didn’t win this past season, then highly doubtful that the Warriors can get further next season. The Warrior’s run has to end someday.
So which team did Steph crush the dreams of the fanbase of this time? Go on, you are making the dumbest possible take here and totally ignoring they came back from worse in 2020 to win it all in 2022. I think you are just sick of Curry destroying your fave team over and over.
Too bad. 8 rings are coming. You know its true.
5 years of 15-20 million, with last years a player option, knowing that he probably does not do the 5 years?
won’t speak on green’s h.o.f. ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ but, bottom line, he’s gonna get his statue outside chase center in a few years along with the rest of the ‘hamptons five’ and he’s also gonna get his jersey raised to the chase center rafters.
I don’t particularly like DG, and, if I were GSW, I would end the relationship at this point.
But, more generally, when a player spends his entire prime with a team, and was part of a core that won multiple championships, it’s not the worst idea in the world for the team to give him a late career contract that reflects a career bonus of sorts. Both parties have to know that they will have greater regret over ending the relationship too soon, than they could ever have over letting it carry on too long.
Yep. The Warriors are indeed gluttons for punishment.
Championships = Punishment now?
Grow up. You haters are just moving the goalposts any old place now.
