A fifth-year player option and a trade kicker could be among the contract details being haggled over as the Celtics and Jaylen Brown continue to negotiate a potential super-max extension, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe and Brian Robb of MassLive.com.
Given that Brown has been the subject of frequent trade speculation in recent years and might be the odd man out down the road if the Celtics want to shake up their roster and/or reduce their payroll, the possible inclusion of a trade kicker could be a key point of contention for both sides, Robb speculates.
According to Himmelsbach, the Celtics and Brown’s camp continued to talk over the weekend and into this week, and league sources remain confident that an extension will be completed sooner or later, but one source told The Globe that “there is work to be done” still.
Here’s more on the Celtics:
- In a separate story for The Boston Globe, Himmelsbach looks at the friendship between former Duke teammates Jayson Tatum and Amile Jefferson, who is joining the Celtics’ coaching staff as an assistant for the 2023/24 season.
- Grant Williams, whose sign-and-trade to Dallas was finalized on Wednesday, spoke to Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports about leaving the Celtics, referring to it as a situation where “both sides just did what’s best for each.”
- Dalano Banton, who said he’s excited to be joining a “championship organization,” wasn’t able to play in the Celtics’ first two Summer League games in Las Vegas due to a minor injury, according to Souchi Terada of MassLive.com. However, Banton apparently plans to play in Wednesday’s game. His two-year deal with Boston isn’t yet official but will presumably be finalized shortly.
- Celtics draft-and-stash prospect Yam Madar, a second-round pick in the 2020 draft, has signed with Turkish club Fenerbahce, per a press release from the team. It’s a two-year deal with a third-year option, though it may include NBA outs.
- In case you missed it, the Celtics officially signed Kristaps Porzingis to his two-year extension on Wednesday.
Wouldnt the trade kicker only matter for Brown if the deal itself is less than the full super max, or is it just based on the assumption the cap will go up during the deal? Although, wouldnt that not matter since the deal is a percentage of the cap, not necessarily a figure?
The deal will start at 35% of the cap and will increase by 8% annually. The cap could go up by as much as 10% per year, so after the first season, Brown would be able to cash in on at least a portion of the trade kicker.
Haha, Celtics are f’d. Porzingus for $30m is the worst move since Vin Baker. Brown gonna be gone cause they willing to pay someone who can barely put on his shoes without getting injured but not pay him who has earned every cent. This is the beginning of the end.
Wonder if every NBA team has a person who hates them? Carrying some type of grudge. And thus trolls them unmercifully. Yep, Vin Baker didn’t work out but he was past his prime and had personal issues. But each team has to take it’s chances & I have high hopes for Kristaps. He certainly is in his prime. Go Celtics!
In his prime? Ahahaha!!! If this is his prime Celtics are doomed.
There isn’t any hate, just facts. Just use some perspective, if you’re Brown, you have 7 quality years to a team, got better every year, became 2nd All NBA, all after signing one underpaid contract and you see them drop $30m on some overrated bum who hasn’t played a single game for the team, how would you feel? I don’t care who you are, anyone in that position would feel disrespected.
So after Jaylen leaves, what they going to do? Go ahead, give me the plan. They gonna have a $132m payroll for 8 players. Who they gonna get? Ben Simmons? So the plan is to sacrifice Jaylen for Porzingus and Ben Simmons? And that’s best case scenario. Good luck!
Maybe the Heat will sign him so they can finally win a championship…lol
Where’s my money?
Where’s mine?
How about instead of the Miami Heat it’s the Guy In Me Meat and it’s just for the fellas
Who knows what will happen with our Celtics star Jaylen Brown. But he’s been subject to much jealousy by bigoted fans, as he’s a modern day man, and then jibed at by so-called sports experts who are really only experts at causing trouble and pot-stirring to get attention, eyeballs and their names known. Couldn’t play with Tatum, spread info that the team is always looking to trade him, etc. Hope Jaylen makes it bigger & bigger whether he stays with us or moves on. And gets to play ball & gets out from under the pressure cooker. Got Celtics!
Well, that looks like the end of Yam Madar coming to our Celtics. But going to Turkey to play? Turkey’s not quite Russia but it’s a whole different dynamic than coming here to America & the NBA. Maybe we’ll hear more, whether Celts didn’t think he was good enough, or he didn’t want to come. Anyway, I wish him well. Go Celtics!
Next, what about Juhann Begarin?
Celtics are doomed. Petty moves. Instead of trading Smart they should of traded Brogdon instead but they wanted picks more. Instead of resigning Williams they wanted picks more. Is Danny A running this team again? Not rooting for them anymore. Drafted another 6’7 SF SMH. Clueless owner. Fire clueless Brad
I don’t think Jaylen Brown cares that Porzingis is getting $30MM for 2 years when he can get $50MM+ for 5 years.
You could not ask for a better development path for yam madar he is going to one of the best euro teams in fennerburke owon the fiba rising star award
I just read an article titled “The Real Reason the Celtics signed K.P..
If it’s accurate it only serves to point out the disrespect for Brown by this organization and it’s apparent ulterior motives towards it’s core players.
“SAD”!
That article was utter nonsense then.
