After a busy first two days of free agency on Friday and Saturday, the pace has slowed down on Sunday and Monday, with minimum-salary deals, rookie agreements, and two-way signings dominating headlines at Hoops Rumors.
While that shift is partly due to the fact that most of this year’s top free agents have come off the board, it’s also related to the trade requests submitted by Damian Lillard and James Harden, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, who suggests that neither the Trail Blazers nor the Sixers are in a rush to make a deal. Some areas of the free agency market may be on hold until those situations are resolved, Fischer explains.
For instance, the Heat – who are Lillard’s top suitor – have told several free agents, including Malik Beasley, that they won’t be moving forward with veteran’s minimum signings until they have more clarity on the Lillard situation. Miami would presumably be a more attractive destination for veteran free agents with Lillard on the roster — and would have more roster openings to fill.
According to Fischer, Dario Saric and Josh Christopher are among the players who “could be involved” with the Heat depending on what happens with Lillard. Saric is a free agent, while Christopher is reportedly being traded from Houston to Memphis, so perhaps there are scenarios in which he’d be re-routed to Miami. Beasley apparently decided not to wait on the Heat, having agreed to sign with Milwaukee.
Here’s more from Fischer:
- Like Lillard with the Heat, Harden has conveyed a strong preference that he end up with the Clippers, according to Fischer. The fact that the two stars are each focused on a single destination is one reason why the Trail Blazers and Sixers are moving so deliberately, Fischer notes, since they don’t want to be “backed into a corner” and accept pennies on the dollar. It will be a challenge for Portland and Philadelphia to extract the best possible package they can for their respective stars without opening up the market to other teams, either as potential Lillard/Harden destinations or as third or fourth clubs in multi-team deals that get the star guards to their desired landing spots.
- The Clippers appear better positioned to work out a deal with the Sixers for Harden than the Heat are with the Trail Blazers for Lillard, in part because Philadelphia is prioritizing expiring contracts and Los Angeles has plenty of those to offer, Fischer says. Still, he wonders if Clippers swingman Norman Powell – who has three years left on his contract – might hold some appeal for the Sixers, whose new head coach Nick Nurse had Powell on his 2019 title team in Toronto.
- The fact that Harden has just one year left on his contract – compared to Lillard’s four – may make a dark-horse suitor more comfortable about rolling the dice on the Sixers guard, knowing that if it doesn’t go well, he’ll be off the books in a year and it won’t be a long-term problem, Fischer writes. On the other hand, team executives around the NBA aren’t necessarily convinced that Lillard, who has a reputation for being a consummate professional and can’t reach free agency until at least 2026, would play hardball and refuse to report to camp if he’s sent to a non-Heat team, Fischer adds.
IMO
Asking price:
Lillard: 1 star level player + 4 Firsts
Harden: 1 star level player + 2 Firsts (because of expiring contract)
I can only give Heat and Clippers 5 days.
After 5 days, I’d make trade to other teams.
You can ask many teams to help you, you can do whatever you want.
Star level players example
KP
Ayton
Murray Hawks
Smart
Wiggins
JJJ
Herro and Lowry are not star level players as of now
Except Wiggins isn’t a star. Good player sure. Star no. He is a number 3 scorer in GS and mostly a number 2 in MN. So a star no.
Sure…..
Defense doesn’t count, huh?
Are you in a basketball Rotisserie League?
P.S. I’ve always loved Wiggins. When he came into the league as a rookie his defense turned games. Think his D along with his O isn’t keeping the Warrior team competitive?
Slappy, I don’t completely disagree about Wiggins, and what he brings to a team.
He is on the wrong timeline for Portland, GSW does need him for the skill set he brings to the table, and Portland just signed Jerami Grant to a long term contract.
Biggest of Free Agency, so Wiggins is a bad fit/redundant in Portland if not redirected as the article suggests through a 3rd, and possible 4th team. Same for Herro.
It wouldn’t surprise me if this is how a Lillard deal gets done, and/or Harden.
Actually Wiggins was the #4 scorer in GS. Poole was the #3 scorer for the last 2 seasons. Now that he’s gone Wiggins will jump to #3.
Just use the Durant trade as a reference, draft capital is the same but the players would be a lower tier than Bridges. I think Hero is good enough if an extra FRP pick can be added
If you watched the Miami Heat Summer League team last night, then you are aware that they actually have some pretty nice assets
7’0 Nikola Jovic is going to be an absolute stud. Miami is going to do everything in their power to hold on to him, and Portland has got to be insisting that he be included in the deal.
#17 overall pick Jaime Jacquez is also a baller.
If I am Portland …. Miami can keep Tyler Herro and Caleb Martin. Give Jovic, Jacquez, a 1st, 2 2nd round picks and whichever of Kyle Lowry, Duncan Robinson, etc that works as salary filler.
I was willing to send out Jovic last year for KD, but much less inclined for Lillard. He is the absolute farthest I would go, if it’s being insisted they trade for him, though I personally wouldnt trade for Lillard, as the Heat, regardless
Worst thing in the world you can do in evaluating players is rely on Summer League results (especially one game’s worth!). The ground is littered with guys who balled in Summer League. In fact if anything it’s a reverse relationship: The better they do in SL, the worse they are in the League.
Jovic evaluation ain’t based on a Summer League game. He was impressive last night, and showed exactly why Miami wouldn’t give him up last year. They absolutely know he has a chance to be a stud.
He played well in certain matchups early in the season before he hurt his back
There is no way the Clippers give up much of anything for a 34 year old point guard making $36M coming to the end of his career! Westbrook just signed a 2 year 8M deal with the Clippers at the same age! No way Hardin warrants a $36M salary at this point and he ran Westbrook out a Houston 3 years ago!
Could the Sixers bring back Saric?
I kind of miss him
I wish I knew what to do or trade for concerning the Sixers, that whole NBA Budget plan or whatever you want to call it, is for the Birds
Bring back The Homie!
Harden ran Westbrook out of Houston ….
So this should be fun. Imagine taking less money than Harden ……
Just finish the deal with Heat . Why the drama. Herro can be moved to another team. What’s the issue …… get it done. Starting to bore me.
Nikola Jovic is the reason for the drama. Miami is trying to hold him. Portland absolutely wants him in the deal.
This. Miami does have some interesting pieces that Portland wants, but Caleb Martin isn’t it, despite all the protesting coming out of the Miami front office. It’s Jovic and probably to a lesser extent Jacquez that Portland wants. And sending Herro somewhere else isn’t that easy. He’s a $30m player. So what is coming back and from whom, and where do they go? It’s super complicated.
Folks need to understand that Miami grows guys like Caleb Martin and Gabe Vincent on trees. They develop guys for their system with Spoelstra, and just plug them in.
Gabe Vincent wouldn’t even have been playing in the playoffs if Tyler Herro and Oladipo didn’t get hurt. Herro got hurt, and they started using Oladipo again. He got hurt and then they went to Gabe Vincent. They just plug these guys in. Remember two years ago when Kendrick Nunn looked like a 10-year NBA guy?
Miami already drafted a better player to slot into Martin’s slot in Jaime Jacquez.
It’s just difficult to get guys at his position though. Guards are different, but it’s harder to get wings that can shoot, and defend, especially wing/guard types like Caleb
That being said, they do have Dru Smith who plays the 1-3 spots
I doubt the Heat are holding this up…
They absolutely do not want to put Nikola Jovic in the deal. Jovic has a ceiling that could have him ultimately win the deal for Portland by himself.
Portland needs young front court talent. The skill level of Jovic is off the charts. If Portland gets Jovic …. Inside of three years, he will be the face of the franchise, and not Scoot. Jovic has that high of a ceiling. We have watched this before. Remember when Denver drafted Emmanuel Mudiay with the #6 overall pick and anointed him the face of the franchise??? A 2nd round pick named Nikola Jokic changed all of that. I ain’t calling Jovic the next Jokic, but the Jovic kid has a chance to be really good. Makes everyone on the floor a better player. Great basketball IQ. As his body gets stronger, he will be a problem.
Nets deal centers around Ben Simmons, so pick-centric.
Heat deal centers around Herro.
Sixers aren’t dealing Maxey so its 3rd teams assets from a Harden deal, so nothing to move the needle.
Knicks would be RJ Barret or pick-centric. Does a Dame and Brunson backcourt work, too small?
Celtics is Brown to a 3rd team for a bunch of picks if he says no to Portland.
Clippers have the same assets they would deal for Harden, doesn’t move the needle.
Mavs don’t have the picks or young players to facilitate.
Wolves already balked at trading KAT.
Kings could offer Mitchell, Huerter, Lyles, Monk and 3 1sts.
Pelicans could offer Zion or Ingram.
Celtics have the best potential offer, Knicks, Pelicans, then the Heat, Kings, Nets, Sixers/Clippers (basically the same assets).
No one else is going to get into the Dame sweepstakes. LAL, GSW, Bucks, Cavs, etc.. either don’t have pieces they can or will move, not enough salary filler, not enough picks and beyond that the rest are too far away from contending. And the Nuggets are good.
“Knicks would be RJ Barret or pick-centric. Does a Dame and Brunson backcourt work, too small?”
As a Knicks fan, I think it would obviously make the team better but not necessarily championship contenders. Knicks need better shooting, but there’s two things to consider:
-Randle, Dame, and Brunson are all pretty ball-dominant. Would they gel?
-A Brunson/Lillard backcourt leaves SF kind of in limbo, unless they moved Grimes there. Theoretically, this could work on offense as Grimes is mostly just a spot-up shooter that doesn’t require a lot of touches. But defensively, this leaves 6’1″ Brunson, 6’2″ Lillard, and 6’5″ Grimes as your perimeter defense. It seems too small but who knows?
I will say that I think the Knicks have almost a 0% chance of acquiring Dame, but they could put out a decent package of RJ, IQ, and 3-4 1sts.
Here is the real deal that benefits the league and all five teams.
For example:
Boston: snt dok simone 2nd pick
Nets: sexton 2nd pick
Suns: nurkic no pick needed tax relief
Portland: tht Johnny Ayton Williams Royce
3 frp all top 5 protected by jazz
Jazz: Dame and cam Thomas.
It all works!
Warriors should go for Saric. He’s a perfect bench big for them. He’s got good size, can shoot and pass
Bulls and Toronto could facilitate a Miami trade.
Bulls get: Herro, Thad Young
Miami gets: Lillard
Toronto gets: Caleb Martin
Portland gets: Zach Lavine or DeMsr DeRozan, 2 Miami FRPs
Not sure why Portland would want Derozan as he’s on an expiring deal and 34 years old. They could flip him to another team (like the Knicks) for a 1st or two.
Portland can do better. Great deal for Miami, Toronto, and Chicago though, especially Miami. Gotta throw Jovic in for sure going to Portland, and DeMar re-routed somewhere else. Probably doesn’t happen without one of Jovic or Jacquez going somewhere (Portland). And not sure why the Toronto part needs to be in there at all.
Bulls: Herro
Miami: Lillard, 2nd rounder from Chicago
Portland: 2 Miami FRP, 1 good NYK FRP, RJ Barrett, Jovic
NYK: DeMar
For Lillard
Wolves and Nets offer two times better than Heat and Clippers
Wolves offer
Karl-Anthony Towns, Jordan McLaughlin, Wendell Moore, 2028 and 2030 first-round pick swaps
Nets offer
a package of young prospects (Cam Thomas, Noah Clowney, Dariq Whitehead),
NBA-ready talent (Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith) AND
3 future Firsts
Yeah KAT is the first idea that came into my head too. Win/win. But I doubt Dame approves it. Thank goodness for us Nuggets fans too, cuz that Minny team would be GOOD. Dame and Ant would be a pretty nasty backcourt to deal with.
If I’m Portland no Bam in the deal than no Dame. It’s that simple.
Bam is not going anywhere and will hopefully spend his whole career here. He is the carrier of the culture. He is the Zo. He is the UD. He is the Dwyane Wade. I already wouldnt trade for Lillard, but even mentioning him gets the slightest chuckle from me. Good luck with that
Portland wants Nikola Jovic. If no Jovic then no deal. Miami will ultimately have to put him in the deal.
I could get past the idea of sending out Jovic, even though I would prefer to move him for only certain players as well, but the moment Caleb Martin would be included, I would kindly have to back hand slap someone
Jovic is SO much more valuable than Martin. It’s not even close. Miami loudly protesting about including Martin should be read: “Please take Martin instead of Jovic.” They WANT to give in on including CM, but Portland never said they want him. They probably don’t.
Martin’s 28 and just had a hot playoff run for three rounds. He wasn’t very good in the regular season. He’s just a mid-career journeyman who had a career month at the right time.
Facts!
Caleb is a wing/guard that defends multiple positions, including PGs, and is disruptive, plays hard, is in the right spots, makes the right plays, shoots it better than he used to, and can be an attacker….he is basically a guard version of late Iguodala, and lowkey kind of a remedial version of super young rookie Wade skillset wise (like if he wasnt a primary option)
They need him as a connector with their shooters, as well as just a 3 and D wing option. Strus being gone changes some things a little though, depending who else they get, and again, as I’ve said with a couple of other circumstances, Richardson makes it a little easier to maybe not need him as much going forward, but I would prefer to have both
The info on Saric, Beasley, and Christopher with the Heat is a little confusion… Saric would have been extremely interesting if they hadnt already signed Thomas Bryant. They signed an extra big already, and they drafted Jaime Jaquez jr, plus they still have Jovic. I would doubt they would then use 1 of their last 2 roster spots on Saric, but I could be wrong
Beasley is interesting b/c he plays the position they arguably need, but his defense has been inconsistent his whole career. It does sound here as though they were going to sign him before the Lillard news though
Christopher is very interesting. I liked him in Houston. Reminds me of a young Nick Young literal clone, but a little higher basketball IQ, and a better defender, and can maybe play some PG. I could see the theoretical fot there, although I would probably prefer other options, and also question how they would get him
I think the point is that if they make a deal for Lillard, they’d have more than one or two open roster spots — and may no longer have guys like Jaquez and Jovic.
In which case, Saric at smallball 5 makes sense, although I would still prefer a better defensive presence there
Personally, as talk of cost continues, it feels more and more as though it isnt worth it. I would hope he goes somewhere else, at that point
Do a Twitter search for “Jalen Green Video”. Jalen Green’s manhood is being tested in a major way right now. Josh Christopher is the one Jalen Green is on top of. Some find it curious that he was traded within a week of the video dropping.
Christopher should have been traded a long time ago. He’s a chucker, an all me player who tries to play hero ball anytime he gets into game. There’s a reason he was buried on the bench of a 22 win team last year
So you agree about the Nick Young clone thing
I dont have Twitter, and apparently you cant view anything anymore without an account…so I have no idea what you’re referring to
Jovic is not holding anything up but his shorts …… plllllllllleeeeeeaaase
Jovic, Jaquez, two #1 picks, Duncan, Herro. Is an offer that works. All the stories are. Blazers not interested in Herro. Which makes sense. Since Simons is basically same player, probably better.
So it looks like a third team is needed here. So it’s about who will take Herro.
Or can Sixers and Clippers get in on this. So Harden can go to LA.
If I’m Philadelphia I definitely want Herro. His outside game compliments Embiids. They should be all over him. Plus they can move on from Harden.
Another bump it seems. Is Blazers trying to unload Nurkic with Dame trade too. Now this seems a lot harder. And could take more time to work out.
So from all the info that is out there. And all the basketball sense we can muster. Nurkic and Herro are the ones who are holding this up. To me it’s a matter of time. Heat want him. Dame wants Heat ……..
The rest is semantics ……
Dame is going to Miami …..
All the stories of Portland “seeking the best return” is only Miami NOT putting Jovic in the trade, and Portland insisting he be there. Portland then “shops” the story that they are seeking the best assets. All these names on all these rosters being thrown around, and the #1 choice for Portland of ALL the names is Nikola Jovic. He is the type of player you build a team around. Portland wants young, front court talent. They are good for guards. Jovic brings the shooting that Scoot absolutely does not. His age fits perfectly with the rest of the 19 and 20 year olds.
Miami has exhausted all their draft picks. This is the one young asset they would like to hold on to. BAM and Jimmy are on the clock. He cushions the blow of having no picks.
A couple of thoughts I could see as options
Heat get Lillard and Nassir Little
Orlando gets Simons
Portland gets Lowry, Herro, Gary Harris, Bol Bol, Cole Anthony, Orlando 2024 1st, Denver 2024 2nd, Memphis/Boston 2025 2nd, Milwaukee 2026 2nd, Heat 2024 1st (after Heat swaps 2025 and 2026 with OKC to open it up), Heat 2028 1st, Heat 2030 1st
Portland gets salary relief with all the expirings, plus Herro at half the cost of Lillard, 4 1sts, 3 2nds, and the salary relief on the 4 year deal for Little…they also have a lot of movable pieces in that scenario to do other stuff/would still have a pretty good team
Another idea is the same earlier deal I mentioned, but instead, Orlando gets Herro instead of Simons, and Portland gets Caleb Houston from Orlando in addition to the others, and the 2024 denver 2nd is the 2025 Denver 1st, which would be 5 1sts instead of 4
Another idea would be to have Kyle Lowry go to Brooklyn, with Spencer Dinwiddie and Edmund Sumner going to Portland, and a 2026 2nd
And then 1 more where Lowry goes to Philly, Siakam goes to Philly
Paul Reed goes to the Heat
Tobias Harris and a Philly 2nd goes to Portland
Harden, Jaden Springer 2029 Philly 1st to Toronto, and 1 of their other 2nds
I see issues with it myself, but its mostly just reflecting on things we know so far about what players are trying to be moved or not. I wouldnt move Siakam, for example. I also think this is significantly more than Portland should get for Lillard, especially on his contract
I could also see a scenario where Jovic gets sent out for the Nets in a deal where they’re involved as a 3rd team and get Herro/Lowry, but I would really prefer him not to be included in a Lillard deal that I already dont think is a good idea
If it was me though, I just wouldnt trade him. I said the same with KD last year. They should just make the last couple of moves they would make if they were keeping him, including trying to trade Simons. They have him for 4 years. It’s not like they have to rush
As a Heat fan, I generally hope they dont trade for him. I would prefer specific types of players, if they were going to make a big trade, and go away from their current trajectory/roster
