The Jazz are waiving big man Vernon Carey Jr., reports Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link). The move is official, per NBA.com’s transactions log.
The 32nd overall pick of the 2020 draft after one college season at Duke, Carey spent his rookie season with the Hornets, who shipped him to the Wizards at the 2022 trade deadline. He has barely played at the NBA level over the past three seasons, appearing in 37 total games for 187 minutes, including 28 minutes over 11 games with Washington last season.
Carey did have a solid stint with Washington’s G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, in 2022/23. He averaged 20.7 PPG 8.3 RPG, 1.9 APG, 0.9 SPG and 0.9 BPG in 14 regular season games (27.6 MPG).
The 22-year-old was waived by the Wizards at the beginning of March and signed a multiyear deal with the Jazz during the season’s final weekend. His minimum-salary contract for ’23/24 was non-guaranteed, so Utah won’t have any cap charge for releasing him.
Always like this player. He’s an old school 4 to me. I would post him and feed him all day. Teach him how to throw it back out to shooters.
In todays gm. Where everyone wants to shoot more. To so call “space the floor”. Why wouldn’t you want a good Post player. Who can hit the open three shooters when they double him. To me ….. a good Post player. Is made for guys who can shoot. It’s called inside outside game. Should work much better today with more shooters. I can’t be the only one who thinks that …….
A solid low post scorer today. Can easily put up 20 a gm. With all the soft D in todays game.
Keep at it Vernon ……. NBA will wake up.
Silvers NBA he wants everyone young running down the court shooting 3s. No need for a Post game, dribbling, defense, coaches and everything else
I would guess it’s more to do with him having a hard time switching on defense. I doubt it’s about offense.
Teams won’t double him — they won’t even single him.
Thought jazz would keep him for workouts. Just wanted to seem him play in the summer. Jazz must have other plans cooking
Doesn’t make sense to release him right now but will see…
He already did play in the SLC Summer League. I thought he was solid. They likely will have other bigs playing for them in Vegas.
The Jazz also do this every year, where they waive a guy just to sign him to the SLC Stars as backups in case they need them during the season, and for further study.
Would he be eligible for a two-way contract or would his appearances in three seasons prevent it?
Possible for two way with new cba
Guys with three years of experience have always been two-way eligible. Only players with four or more are ineligible (players aren’t credit with a year of experience until the end of the season).
Reminds me of Jahlil Okafor, old school type of centre. No matter where he goes outside of the NBA he’s going to put up really good numbers.
I’d assume he probably hangs around the G League for a few years trying to get another opportunity in the NBA but it likely won’t come.
I’d love to see him come down under to the NBL. He’d be a beast down in Australia
Free Okafor
I know Jokic abused Miami down low. And he’s not even a good Post player. He’s more smart and savvy. And when they did doubled him. He always found the open man. Just like every team needs a rim protector. All should have a few good post players. Just another way to get buckets. And get them in foul trouble.
