Trade speculation involving Sixers center Joel Embiid shows why the Knicks have decided to be patient in building their roster, writes Fred Katz of The Athletic. Team president Leon Rose has been collecting assets to eventually use in a trade for a star, but that player will have to be a good fit for the organization to go all in, Katz adds.
When Rose pursued Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz last summer, he placed a limit on what he was willing to offer, according to Katz. The Cavaliers outbid New York and were able to land Mitchell in a late summer trade. The Knicks also contacted the Bulls about Zach LaVine, but a source tells Katz that Chicago’s asking price was “giant” and the teams never got close to a deal.
New York has been viewed as a logical destination if the Timberwolves decide to trade Karl-Anthony Towns because of his connections to Rose and CAA. However, Katz hears that Minnesota’s price for Towns is also “sky high,” and another source tells him that New York hasn’t expressed interest in acquiring Towns.
Embiid would represent both the talent level and the fit the Knicks are looking for, but Katz states that management isn’t focused solely on him. With a collection of young talent and all its own draft picks available to trade, plus protected first-rounders from the Mavericks, Wizards, Bucks and Pistons, New York will be in position to make a significant offer for any star who becomes available.
There’s more from New York:
- Evan Fournier‘s recent comments to a French news outlet may complicate the Knicks’ plans to trade him, observes Zach Braziller of The New York Post. Fournier began the season as a starter, but he only played 27 games and wasn’t used at all in the postseason. He expressed dismay at Tom Thibodeau’s decision and said his feelings were shared by Derrick Rose, who suffered a similar fate. Fournier said it would be “a disaster” for his career to spend another season in New York, but Braziller notes that the trade market is slow right now even for stars, so any Fournier deal may be a long way off.
- The Knicks haven’t added a backup power forward since trading Obi Toppin to Indiana, and Ian Begley of SNY.tv is skeptical that they’ll find a replacement before training camp opens. Begley notes that Thibodeau prefers to use a nine-man rotation, and those nine players appear set already.
- Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report suggests a few bargains who might be available for the Knicks on veteran’s minimum contracts.
Nobody is giving up anything of value for Fournier unless Knicks take back another bad contract or give up a couple of picks to get rid of him. Best to play him and hope he does good to increase his value.
You never know. Weirder trades have happened. But I won’t be holding my breath
He’s and expiring contract. That’s used to match salaries. We don’t care about nobody. Only about the the one we trade for. He hasn’t forgotten how to play. Haters don’t know ……
Takes more than just picks to land a star of a certain magnitude. Gotta remember that these GMs, and FOs in general, have zero assurances that they’ll still be employed to use the 2027 pick they landed in the trade of [star player].
Gotta have some immediacy too.
That’s why the PG trade included Shai, Melo trade of ’11-12 included–at a minimum– Danilo, Spida trade included Lauri, Gobert trade included Kessler, etc. You can even throw in Mikal being moved in the trade for KD.
Unless the Knicks are sitting back and waiting for a situation to get untenable like the KI in BK situation — because I dunno if they have the assets in the immediacy to make the move for anyone. Kinda like how Miami has to sit back and wait for a few of their rookies’ deals to be tradable to make an actual offer for Dame. Cuz Herro ain’t it. Portland doesn’t need to add him to Scoot/Simons/Sharpe, even tho he’s a 20 ppg, 37%+ 3pt shooter who won SMoY a few years ago and he’s not even in his prime yet. Still doesn’t seem to be moving the needle in a trade for Dame. Especially if you have to wait for a couple of rooks to be tradable.
That being said, if the Knicks have to bid against offers that include any of Jaylen B, Simons/Sharpe, any one of the Pacers’ wings, etc. Am I to believe that a protected pick from Detroit/Washington will be the sweetener that gets it done for the Knicks..? Even if the player they’re offering isn’t viewed in the same light as those mentioned?
I dunno…feels like more narrative than legit.
Yeah that must be …….
Beal ——-
Chris Paul, Landry Shamet. 4 future 1st rd pick swaps. Which means no swaps. Cause Wizards will never be better than Su s during this transaction. Plus 6 future 2nd rd picks …
Yeah not even a first rd pick …….
So why do Knicks need to spend more. We are trending up wether we trade for a star or not. So get informed. We run this trade. We do t need their unwanted players. We are getting who we WANT …… learn it
Article was about the Knicks eyeing Embiid. I said it takes a particular package for a star of a certain magnitude and explained my reasoning.
And you responded by talking about Beal who had a NTC, today’s Chris Paul & Landry Shamet..
…….enjoy your weekend Al.
Knicks have more assets than just about any team. But why do we want trades that will never happen. You bring up Ky. That’s funny. It there’s one thing you should have learned by now. Even if you don’t care about Knicks. Or are not a fan of Knicks. Is this FO is building thru the draft. They want age available players that fit our time line. It’s not any available star. Why must you swallow everything they feed you. Stand back and let it happen. Cause it will. This is what the whole point of bringing in Thibs was about. Just let it happen
What good are assets if you’re not willing to pay the price? They’re going to get outbid for any star that becomes available because all those picks are heavily protected and their young players are incredibly overvalued by their front office and fans.
Fournier being another example of players not realizing they are on the decline. Rose was another. Harden is the star example of the same thing. I’m actually curious to see what his next contract looks like.
Still finding a 3-team deal that lands Towns in NY, Robinson in CHA, and PJ Washington + Quickley + NY picks (to recoup from Rudy trade) in MIN palatable for all parties. Salary fillers can move around here, NY could find a dump for Fournier in the deal, etc, and CHA upgrades at a weak-ish Center position while solving their Washington problem. CHA isn’t even a bad spot for RJ Barrett if NYK wanted to move him to retain other assets/get more back.
MIN builds around ANT with IQ/Jaden/PJ/Naz + vet role players, NYK vaults upward in the East with Brunson/Randle/KAT core supported by Hart, Grimes, Donte, etc, and any additions CHA makes here just make them better, they just need guys who are proven NBA players.
Clearly NYK win this 3 team trade idea by many miles and more. It would vault them to championship contender status.
Charlotte bolsters its D with Robinson, although hes injury prone. And the hornets drafted a C in the 1st in Williams. So….
But MIN losses a young all-NBA talent for a good 3 &D SF or Small ball 4 in Washington, back up SG/PG in Quickly(although he should take over for Conley) and I would assume at least 3 FRP’s plus choice to swap.
Dont see MIN making this trade, especially after they gave up the farm for Godert and clearly want to advance in the West.
Nobody wants KAT ……. nobody wants Embiid …….. stop swallowing everything they feed you. Personally I rather have Rudy.
Sixers would never trade with Knicks. Look up Dr J trade ….
Raptors would take Kat, and most certainly take Embiid
Siakam for Kat. In a heartbeat
Siakam for Embiid plus every pick for 7 years. Sign me up
Knicks are back?
Fournier like Lillard shouldn’t have signed such large contracts if they don’t want to deal with the ramifications of doing so.
The Fournier situation with the NYK can’t really get very complex. He’s a bad, yet expiring, contract. Nothing more, nothing less. I can’t imagine another team trading for him as a player, or the NYK giving up anything to just dump his salary. He’s no different than any other bad contract that’s expiring (he’ll be used as a matching contract in a larger trade prior to the deadline, or released thereafter upon a buyout agreement). He’s been in the league long enough to know these things. If he wants an earlier buyout than the deadline, he needs to offer up something.
Knicks had their chance to dump him in San Antonio, Spurs were trying to get to the floor
I didn’t see this. What did SAS offer to give or take?
Fournier might not get his wish. The Knicks could use him to match big money deals
We are in control of this. Not Fourniers value. Or writers who know squat ……
All same knowledgeable writers (so called). Who killed us for not signing Kyrie and KD. Who didn’t do anything but Ruin the Nets …..
Keep hating …… you boring bunch.
Let me run THIS …….
DeM DeR. …… it’s that easy.
What will it take to get DeM? I agree with you completely
2 1sts, Fournier, and another contract like Hartenstein. The fact that the Knicks haven’t made that move exhibits the ineptitude of their FO. But knowing how Thibs operates, they’d trade for DeRozan and he wouldn’t play him. That’s the disconnect – they trade for guys and Thibs barely will use them. Waste of a time. Josh Hart is like an outlier.
If they don’t want LaVine, won’t pay the price for KAT, Embiid is not available, won’t pay the price for Dame, like who are they waiting for? They have several meh 1st round picks – trade 2 get DeMar DeRozen. I expect the Knicks to acquire no one of significance tho.
Please stop with demar I see your a big fan of his but he doesn’t work with the knicks roster. Between randle JB Rj and Mitch don’t need another older player who doesn’t shoot from outside and doesn’t play defense. Knicks need people to spread the floor not the same player as Rj and someone who’s in there mid 30s. He don’t fit. Also when you say tibs is a great coach he doesn’t know how to coach offense his offensive strategy is trust the past. I’ve been A knicks fan since the 80s and watched every game since. Also the knicks have been rebuilding since they drafted KP not just for 3 years I know rose only been in charge for 3 years but been rebuilding before he showed. Your the only so called knicks fan who wants to trade for someone who don’t fit please stop with Demar unless your plan is to trade RJ who’s 12 years younger and basically the same player. Also Demar would want a extension and why pay someone who’s going to start to decline a massive extension don’t make sense.
The Knicks have been looking for a reliable small forward since the Ewing years. Charles Smith definitely wasn’t the answer. As much as I loved Mason he wasn’t either. That decision cost them a Championship when the Knicks had to play against players like Pippen and Horry in the Finals.
Charles Smith was a PF/C then they played him at SF. I liked him
Carmelo??
Charles Smith was never a small forward was a power forward/ center and I also loved mason but he also was a power forward. Knicks have there small forward in Rj he’s only going to be 23 this year will continue to get better. They need knock down shooters not that thibs will use them right
I agree the Knicks need knock down shooters which is why I wanted Seth Curry in free agency. The Knicks could of had Curry if they unloaded Fournier already.
Or they could swap Fournier for Joe Harris and like a 2nd round pick.
Trade Fournier, Hart or Hartenstien with picks for DeRozan
Knicks are not trading Hart. Great player with an edge like Starks. Knicks should of packaged Fournier, OB1 and picks for DeRozen instead of giving up on OB1 for nothing
