Trail Blazers general manager Joe Cronin will try to accommodate the trade request Damian Lillard made earlier today, but he will also operate in the best interests of his own team, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Rival front offices believe Cronin is looking for a “star-level” return and he’s willing to consider other teams besides Miami, which is Lillard’s preferred destination.
Cronin confirmed that sentiment in a statement he issued after the Lillard news was made public, saying, “We have been clear that we want Dame here, but he notified us today he wants out and he’d prefer to play someplace else. What has not changed for us is that we’re committed to winning, and we are going to do what’s best for the team in pursuit of that goal.” (Twitter link)
Tyler Herro, who has four years and $120MM left on his contract, is considered a vital part of any Heat deal for salary matching purposes. However, sources tell Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link) that Cronin doesn’t view Herro as a good fit with his roster and would try to find a third team to take him if Lillard is traded to Miami. The Nets have been considered as a team that might take on Herro’s contract, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv (Twitter link).
There’s also a sense that the Blazers won’t rush into a deal and will take their time to make sure they get the best return for Lillard, tweets Mark Medina of Sportsnaut.
Many teams are interested in acquiring Lillard, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, who names the Sixers, Clippers and Jazz among them. Amick reiterates that a third team would likely have to get involved for a trade with Miami to work.
Amick also examines what led to Lillard’s trade request, saying he was ready to ask for a deal when he and his agent met with Cronin on Monday. Cronin was able to talk Lillard into waiting to see what the team was able to do in free agency, but when no major additions took place Friday night, Lillard called coach Chauncey Billups and decided it was time to move on.
Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer also has doubts that Lillard will end up in Miami, stating that the Heat’s potential best offer would be “one of the worst trades in NBA history.” He believes Miami would be willing to accept Jusuf Nurkic‘s contract along with Lillard, while sending back Herro, Kyle Lowry, Jaime Jaquez, Nikola Jovic, first-round picks in 2028 and 2030 and a pick swap in 2029. O’Connor points out that the deal wouldn’t give Portland a collection of valuable picks or young talent to build around.
O’Connor lists eight teams that he believes should be aggressively pursuing Lillard, starting with the Sixers. Philadelphia has indicated that it’s not willing to part with Tyrese Maxey, but if that changes, O’Connor views Maxey, two future first-rounders, a pick swap and expiring contracts as better than what Miami can offer. He points out that Sixers president Daryl Morey can pick up more trade assets by sending James Harden to the Clippers before addressing Lillard.
Another Rockets move by sign and trade? They would have to add one of their current additions with another young player, but it seems to be what the Rockets are doing. Getting senior citizens and letting the young get moved.
Heat plan to complete the deal today or ASAP.
You know Heat don’t have it. You just don’t demand something that Heat don’t have it , right?
Strus and Vincient are gong.
Honestly
If I want to trade Lillard or Harden, only 3 teams that I refuse to chat:
1. Heat
2. Clippers
3. Knicks
All 3 teams are not offering the equal value of superstars.
A Star-level player plus 4 Firsts
Bobby Marks proposes a 3-team deal between the Nets, Trail Blazers and Heat.
MIA: Damian Lillard
BKN: Tyler Herro
POR: Ben Simmons, 5 firsts, pick swap
pic.twitter.com/0P1jqU4PoI
Replace Simmons with Claxton and I’d take this deal
5 1st rounders is dumb. He’s 33
Portland is getting paid to take Simmons back as well. That’s why 5 1sts
Totally disagree with the assessments presented in this article Herro is the best player they could acquire for Dame outside of Maxey who allegedly isn’t available.
It’s never a rumor or news, but I feel that Rich Paul has requested 76ers to trade away Maxey.
Just what I feel.
Hero is a vastly overpaid role player that would hamstring whatever team picked upbhis contract. You don’t get to trade your mistakes for superstars lol this isn’t 2K.
Hero is a vastly overpaid role player that would hamstring whatever team picked up his contract. You don’t get to trade your mistakes for superstars lol this isn’t 2K.
He’s 23, a career 38.3% 3 shooter, sixth man of the year, 20 ppg scorer with more potential left. Your definition of a vastly overpaid role player is ridiculous. Look at the contracts given the past day to far lesser guys.
Being sixth man of the year quite literally makes him a role player.
You obviously don’t know what role means.
Yes but his defense is atrocious…
They literally need a 2 guard and they don’t want Hero. Tells you all you need to know.
Off the ball shooters are great to have as role players. But creating your own shot in the NBA makes you a star. Hero will never be a star. The problem is he’s paid like one.
Klay Thompson might dispute your ridiculous definition. Clear off-the-ball star player.
GJ you can name the greatest off ball player in history. I have a recommendation for you for cola have you ever heard of Coke?
The Blazers have enough trigger happy guards. The , they already have are a lot cheaper than Herro. They don’t need or should they take back Herro in a trade for same.
I don’t disagree with you, but those right now are the logical choices. I would say, it comes down to how much POR is willing to cater to Liliard as far as where he wants to go. Unless there is a team willing to go all in for Liliard
Blazers don’t need more backcourt. So the 3rd team will have to be involved
Blazers don’t want Herro and Lowry
Third and fourth teams will have to support the Heat.
Compare to Durant trade
Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, four first-round picks and a 2028 draft swap.
Bridges + Rookie contract Cam Johnson = 1 star level player
4 Firsts and 1 Swap
(discount to teams: 3 Firsts without 1 swap)
Yes that was a good return.
With how old Lillard and butler. I’d eat up those picks. Herro to a third team for more picks. Nets?
That’s weak ……. Has to start
Herro, Duncan, Jovic, Jaquez, plus two picks. Two swaps and Lowry if you add Nurkic ……. Blazers can move Herro and Duncan to a third team if they want. I would keep Duncan. Simons is better than Herro. So you don’t need him.
He’ll be on the Celtics soon enough
I could see the Raptors being a third party in a deal, ideally getting a young guard.
A young guard, ideally. Realistically, they end up with Lowry :(
More has said he’s not working with Maxey to do an extension and I can already see there will be problems with that. We are in win now mode much like the Heat and although you’d love to keep the young talent you have sometimes you need to move off a guy that suits your timeline better.
Because of the age concerns and injury history of guys I’d be more inclined to keep some of the future picks and so to sweeten the deal I’d give away Tobias Harris for salary matching.
Tobias Harris, Tyrese Maxey and 2 first round picks for Dame.
Portland have said they want to remain competitive and don’t plan on losing. They want to act in what’s best for the team and if Miamis best player they are willing to offer is Herro and your not interested then that’s going to be a terrible offer. The Sixers deal would be much better than Miami and Dame I think would love to be out East with an MVP winner in Embiid, and win now guys like Tucker and Beverly.
As for the Clippers, you guys can have Harden if your willing to give us 1 or these 2 deals.
Harden for PG
Or
Harden and Korkmaz for M. Morris, RoCo, Powell and a first.
The first deal would be ideal and give us
Dame PG Embiid
Goodluck beating that big 3
The second would just load us up with depth.
Dame Powell Tucker Morris Embiid
Melton Beverly House RoCo …
Not as star studded up filled with win now vets that play both ends of the floor.
Nope…not giving up Maxey!
If the price is right they’d trade Maxey in heartbeat for dame. Of course Morey said they wouldn’t. What’s he suppose to say when asked he trade him? “Sure, of course we’d trade him. We really wouldn’t have a need for Maxey if we go Dame.”
I’d definitely rather keep him too but it’s about timeline. Can be competing for a title and developing young guys at the same time.
GSW gave up Wiseman and Poole
Miami is considering giving up Herro
Morey hasnt even gotten into extension discussions with Maxey. You have the MVP of the league, you have James Harden for 1 more year, guys like Tucker, Melton and Beverly it’s win now time.
Dame is going to help you win now more so than Tobias and Maxey.
Maxey is not really in the “still developing” stage. I mean, sure he can still develope some but he’s already producing really good numbers for a contending team.
As are Poole and Herro. Both has has since been moved and the other on the block in the hopes of a win now piece. Poole in particular won a chip just the other year but got moved on.
Maxey is definitely producing but simply put if your trying to win a championship what would you rather
Dame or Tobias and Maxey…
Barrett , Robinson,
Fournier (Expiring Contract)
Picks , pick swaps,
and more picks
For
Dame and Nurkic
Lol trying to setback the Knicks another 20 years. Smfh
I like the idea but Dame and Brunson won’t work.
If your going all in like that I think your better doing it for a guy like PG or Kawhi.
Kawhi and Morris for Barrett, Randle, IQ, 5 firsts and 2 pick swaps
Brunson Grimes Kawhi Morris Robinson
McBride DiVancenzo Hart … Hartenstein
Clippers still decent
Russ Barrett PG Randle Zubac
IQ Powell Batum RoCo …
Bones Mann etc
Isaac, Anthony, Suggs, both 2024 1st, 2026 1st for Dame.
Yeah cause I’m sure Dame would love to go to Orlando….
Not to mention Portland who already have Scoot and Simons, yeah they really need more young guards in Suggs and Anthony ……
You will all be so disappointed when he ends up in Utah!
No, not at all. I’d be stoked! One of may favorite players on my favorite team? I’d be all for it.
Some people might think it’s crazy talk when including Utah in the conversation but this the exact type of move Ainge has been building up to do. Plus Lillard has said before how he wouldn’t mind playing in Utah, good organization, well run, and he’s loved in Ogden from his time at Weber St. I think Utah might have a real shot. San Antonio too.
When Dame dropped the joint Wasatch Front back in ’16 he mentioned “The Jazz up the road, I wanna play for Jerry Sloan” well rest in peace Coach Sloan but Dolla come join the party over at the Delta Center to play for Will Hardy.
Lol he wants a chance to win a chip or the lottery
Not really! Lillard went to school in utah and likes it there. The jazz have the assets. Not so sure they want to go all in but they can make a offer and let portland and Lillard figure out their problem.
If they can get off that Nurk contract and send him to Miami, I’d take that. Herro can go back to a 6th man role in Portland and Lowry could he bought out
POR has all the time in the world, as long as they’re doing what’s best for their team, and articulates it well. I don’t have a lot of faith in Cronin, but he can redeem himself with a good deal. Nobody’s expecting (I don’t think) a KD type yield, so the bar is not that high.
Portland trades Lillard to Minnesota for Conley, A Edwards and J McDaniel. Trade Grant to Houston for Smith jr and Porter jr
I got the perfect trade. Works for everyone. 4 team trade.
Philadelphia receives Dame (From Portland), Marcus Morris (From LaC), Batum or Covington (From LaC), Cameron Payne (From Phoenix) & Ish Wainright (From Phoenix)
Portland receives Ayton (From Phoenix), Mann (From LaC), Springer (From Philly), ’28 protected 1st & ’30 protected 1st (From LaC) & ’30 protected 1st (From Philly)
Phoenix receives Harris (From Philly)
LA Clippers receives Harden (From Philly), House (From Philly)
Another way to break it down
Philly
Gets: Lillard, Morris, Batum/Covington, Payne & Wainwright
Gives up: Harden, Harris, Springer & protected ’30 1st
Portland
Gets: Ayton, Mann, Springer, protected ’28 1st & 2 protected ’30 1sts
Gives up: Lillard
Phoenix
Gets: Harris
Gives up: Ayton, Payne, Wainright
LA Clippers
Gets: Harden, House
Gives up: Morris, Batum/Covington, Mann, protected ’28 1st & protected ’30 1st
Salary works all around. Philly wins the Dame sweepstakes while keeping their young stud in Maxey. Trades Harden like he wants to his preferred destination in LaC. Clippers lose out on Lillard but get their runner up in Harden & they don’t give up any of their young guys, only sacrificing expiring contracts to match salary & 2 1sts. Phoenix gets Tobi like they wanted for Ayton & matching salary with Ayton going to a 3rd team because Philly doesn’t need him. Portland gets the best possible deal they’d get for Lillard. Probably better than they should get. They get a young Center to go with their young guards and 3 1sts with Mann being a nice piece at the wing spot plus another young guard in Springer. Lots of assets.
It’d probably be easier if they got everyone in the league into an auditorium and had them all switch jerseys.
Philly receiving to much and now giving up enough. Suns aren’t giving up 3 players for Tobias either.
As a Celtics fan, I’d prefer Lillard go to Philly. Lillard + Butler combo would have me worried.
So what if all these GMs just went out for a few drinks and made a ridiculous trade…
Dame and RoCo to the Heat
LaVine, Lowry, Heat 2 1sts and 2 swaps to the Blazers
Harden, PJ Tucker, 1x Sixers Swap to the Clippers
Herro, Furkan, House, Portland 26 1st, Sixers 29 1st and two 2nds to the Bulls
Simons, Mann, Morris, Batum to the Sixers
Everyone wins. LaVine gets a new home and Portland a new ‘star’ and picks, Heat get Dame, Clippers get Harden, Bulls get a young potential star and huge salary relief plus picks, and the Sixers get depth and scoring.
How would the 76ers get depth when you have them giving up 4 players to receive 4 players and the scoring is basically a wash? Not to mention you have them giving up a 1st they can’t trade. The earliest they can trade a 1st is ’30,but even if you switched it, they give up a 1st, 2 seconds & a swap for that mess you have them getting back. 76ers wouldn’t do that trade.
The Blazers wouldn’t either. Lavine isn’t a good fit & giving up a 1st just wouldn’t happen if they’re trading Dame even though you have them receiving 2 1sts, that means they only net 1 1st, Lavine & a salary match for Dame which wouldn’t be enticing enough. Oh & you have them giving up Simons too. There’s no way the Blazers do that trade.
The Bulls would actually be receiving more for Lavine than the Blazers would for Dame. That’s unrealistic.
I’m guessing you’re a Bulls fan because that’s the most unrealistic part. The Bulls ain’t getting that return for Lavine.
House and Furkan were barely part of the rotation last year.
Playoffs:
House 7 Games, 6MPG
Furkan 3 Games, 3.7MPG
So yes technically giving up 4 for 4.
Dame hasn’t played a full season in a couple years now.. he gotta stay healthy
Sorry 5 yrs ago
I remember a couple of the last seasons it was made clear he could have played if there were playoffs on the line. But there wasn’t.
Still a valid concern though.
Something to think about, aside from all of the inane trade speculation.
Chauncey Billups was ultimately hired as the Blazers coach so they he could build offensive and defensive sets around Damian Lillard. If Dame is traded for whatever return there is, doesn’t that largely put Billups on the hot seat to radically retool the offense and defense around Simons, Henderson and Grant? In such a scenario, how much patience does the Portland ownership and front office have before pulling the trigger on a coaching change?
Dame’s request for a trade is very predictable. He tried very hard for a number of years to be a team-first guy, even among the upheaval caused by Paul Allen’s death and the mess left by Neil Olshey. Joe Cronin is trying to rebuild the roster on the fly and keep the Portland fan base engaged in the team, but the small market and long-term uncertainty over team ownership and not giving him much leverage to swing deals.
If *you* were a free agent, would you find anything attractive about making a long-term commitment to signing with the Blazers?
…would you have a week ago? A season ago? It’s Portland dude. This is an inane observation lol
