Since Damian Lillard made his trade request on Saturday, it has been made clear by various reporters that he’s focused on landing with the Heat, but that the Trail Blazers don’t seem overly enthusiastic about what Miami can offer. The belief is that if the Blazers are going to make a deal with Miami, they would want to involve a third team in order to secure more assets that appeal to them, likely in place of Tyler Herro, who would be redundant in Portland’s crowded backcourt.
In an ESPN appearance (YouTube link), Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed that the Blazers are “not impressed” by the assets that the Heat have to offer, adding that Portland has been fielding calls from various teams around the NBA who are inquiring to see what it might take to land Lillard. While the Blazers could potentially get a stronger package from another team, it also remains to be seen how the star guard might respond if he’s sent somewhere he doesn’t want to be, which may give suitors outside of Miami pause about putting their best assets on the table.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter video link), the Blazers have explored multi-team trade scenarios that would send Lillard to the Heat and net Portland more draft assets than Miami has to offer directly.
“There are three- or four-team scenarios in a potential deal with the Heat that would potentially net the Blazers several first-round draft picks,” Charania said during an appearance on The Rally.
While Charania didn’t offer any further details, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report tries his hand at putting together some hypothetical multi-team Lillard deals that he believes are at least somewhat plausible.
As we await more signs of forward progress in the Lillard talks, here’s more from around the Northwest:
- After missing his entire rookie season due to a Lisfranc injury in his right foot, Thunder big man Chet Holmgren made his 2023 Summer League debut in Salt Lake City on Monday. As Tim MacMahon of ESPN writes, last year’s No. 2 overall pick looked a little rusty, but ended up with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks — more importantly, the foot felt “great,” according to Holmgren. “It’s like the injury never happened, other than everything I had to go through obviously,” he said. “But at this point, if you erased my memory, I wouldn’t know that anything had happened to my foot other than the scars from surgery.”
- Numerous EuroLeague veterans have flopped in the NBA, but Vasilije Micic will try to buck that trend with the Thunder, Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman writes. Only 10 Europeans have debuted in the NBA at age 29 or older and a majority had limited success. Micic agreed to a three-year, $23.5MM contract over the weekend.
- With Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards set to sign a massive new maximum-salary extension, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic takes a look at some of the on- and off-court responsibilities that will come with Edwards’ new deal.
I believe that it needs a centerpiece of the trade package
Centerpiece Example
Mikal Bridges
and 3 Firsts and Lowry
Nets aren’t trading Bridges… how many times do they have to say it for it to click?
They Nets aren’t trading Bridges until they actually trade Bridges. What would be the point of picking up Dame if they traded Bridges though?
Just an example
I mean you can have any player in that level as a centerpiece
Blazers should give Heat the list of young players in that level so that Heat can work on.
Let’s say 5 teams make offers, anyone would defeat Heat offer
I wouldn’t even trade Bridges for Lillard straight up
A) The Nets aren’t close enough to competing for a championship
B) Mikal’s contract is so much better than Lillard’s
C) For all his faults (mostly related to Kyrie and KD), Marks isn’t stupid enough to do something so short-sighted.
Get some sleep Luke you’ve been working your tail off for a week !! I’m sure you haven’t gotten more than 4 hours of sleep each night. Thanks for all your hard work but get some rest now that it’s quieted down a little…
2nd that
Also amazing he answers questions down here when directed at
Yes absolutely, even when he’s not beckoned. I’ll say something stupid about the CBA and he’ll come in and say, “no Gary that’s not how it goes.” LOL and then give us the right info. Good stuff I love this site !!
Hey I think I got six thumbs up on this comment because people are agreeing with my statement, “I’ll say something stupid..” LOL.
Hah, thanks Gary. Got a solid seven hours last night. Feeling great.
Is Jovic a promising piece from the heat? He barely saw the court during the great playoff run, but everybody is claiming he’s some valuable trade chip.
As a Heat fan, I hope we can at least keep Jovic, and Juan Wick when the dust settles on Dame coming to Miami.
Keeping Caleb and highsmith would be great as well but that be tough.
This trade request is not at a weird time. The team didn’t do anything to get better except draft the best player available. No other moves, trades or signings. Should of traded Simons, Nurkic, Little and picks for a veteran SG SF and C. They already have a nice bench. Lineup. PG. Lillard. SG. ? SF? PF. Grant C. ? . Great bench. Or trade Lillard for a young SF PF. Trade Nurkic and picks for Wiseman. I said Lillard and pick for M Conley (flip or waive), A Edwards and J McDaniel
Grant to Minnesota. Kyle Anderson to Portland too*
Wolves aren’t trading ANT. That’s a non-starter. Highly doubt we’re going to give up McDaniel either.
Another day, and nothing final on Dame or Harden. And the same talk of trade pieces that haven’t been accepted yet.
Welcome to NBA Ground Hog’s Day!
Hard to settle these larger issue or trades when the soonest is July 7th and or 9th nba has a moratorium and Dame has a no trade for a year.
For now, it’s all hypothetical!
Herro is not for the Nets. He’s too expensive as a backup. But why aren’t Sixers trying to get in on him. Teams might just be waiting this out. But I’m sure someone will take Herro. I can’t see him holding up a Dame trade.
Want to see how Chet holds up this yr. Still think he needs 40lbs. At least ….. why wasn’t he been on a weight gaining program all yr. Seems counterproductive to me. They had a year ……
Don’t be surprised when Holmgren gets traded. The Thunder don’t need him. He’d be perfect for the Spurs and Pacers.
Why would you want 2 developing 7 ft+ on the same team? Seems that would likely stunt the growth of one of them.
