The Mavericks are still in the market for a veteran center and would like to acquire Clint Capela from the Hawks as the third team in a potential Pascal Siakam deal, Marc Stein writes in his latest Substack column.
Atlanta has been pursuing the Toronto forward in trade talks, but an offer centered around De’Andre Hunter may not be enough. The Hawks could be willing to include Capela, who has two years left on his contract at a total of about $43MM, but the Raptors don’t need another high-priced center after re-signing Jakob Poeltl. Stein suggests that Dallas could either try to facilitate the deal or work out a separate trade with Toronto involving Capela.
The Mavs attempted to acquire Capela from the Hawks in June, according to Stein, but they refused to part with Josh Green along with the 10th pick in the draft.
There’s more from the Southwest Division:
- Summer League coach Jared Dudley was impressed with both of the Mavericks‘ rookies, grading Dereck Lively II a “seven out of 10” and Olivier-Maxence Prosper a “nine out of 10,” per Eddie Sefko of Mavs.com. “Lively will get there. He has potential. He’s going to be the starting center of the Mavericks one day,” Dudley said. “O-Max is right there. The three-and-D guys, it’s easier to transition. Offense, he’s a bull going at you. He has to work on his decision-making a little when he gets in the paint. But myself and the Dallas Mavericks are happy with what they did.”
- Spurs rookie Sidy Cissoko‘s ability to attack the basket has stood out during Summer League, observes Tom Orsborn of The San Antonio Express-News. The French forward prepared for the NBA by spending last season in the G League. “I didn’t change my game,” he said. “In my (pre-draft) workouts, I was doing the same thing almost every time. I have this in my game, so I just repeat it over and over. If it is still working, I will not change it.”
- Jake LaRavia, David Roddy and Ziaire Williams are all possibilities to be the Grizzlies‘ starting small forward when the season begins, according to Damichael Cole of The Commercial Appeal. Memphis didn’t bring in anyone to replace Dillon Brooks after he signed with Houston, so there’s not an obvious choice for the position. Cole adds that once Ja Morant returns from his suspension, he may start alongside Marcus Smart in the backcourt with Desmond Bane sliding to small forward.
Not John Konchar, Grizzlies? The best wing defender on your bench? Guy who is still a positive offensive player? The player who should have been starting over Brooks many times? No?
Lmaooo he’s good but lets be real the only person he was better than was zaire Williams, and only because it was a bad season for the guy.
Nah. Konchar had better shooting efficiency than every bench guy besides Kennard and Aldama, and strong defense. Especially on the perimeter (opponents shot 7 percentage points worse there than average, which is better than Brooks did anywhere). Roddy looks mediocre everywhere but right at the rim and didn’t show good defense, and LaRavia needs more time before he can be a starter.
Lmaooo you don’t know ball if stats is the only thing justifying konchar should start, Roddy’s upside is way way way higher. Even though Brooks was annoying he was the guy who needed to start. Aint no way you’re a Memphis fan….
Upside is great, but you have to actually win games first. And Konchar is the best option for that. Let Roddy develop and he can be a solid player. But he’s not even close to that yet. And if Memphis is trying to win games, they’re better off starting Konchar.
Also, Roddy is a 4 in a 3’s body. He’s flat-footed and doesn’t do a good job of defending agile players. Not a good option on the wing.
Brooks took up too many shots and wasn’t nearly as good at defense as people think he is. There’s a reason he cost Memphis so much against the Warriors in 22 and the Lakers last year. Overhyped as hell. He has positives, but he wasn’t the answer in every game. And he wasn’t great at defending perimeter shooters. Some games, Konchar was the better option. And they didn’t use him.
On top of that, Konchar is a team-first guy. Always puts the game and his teammates first. A much better fit with the ball-dominant backcourt and gives JJJ more room to operate. Rather than taking up shots stupidly like Brooks, or being lost and inexperienced like Roddy.
And I’m not a Memphis fan. I’m a BASKETBALL fan. I pay attention to more than one team to the exclusion of understanding the sport. Like it seems you do.
Roddy is 6’5 how would he be a 4….and yeah that sums up everything you just said, I knew you weren’t a fan as soon as you put so much gas into konchar starting lmaooo. Another person who says “oh looky his stats are nice he’s so good,” you clearly have no clue what you’re talking about
“So much gas”, like, I said he was the best of four okay options. He’s a great bench player, but Memphis hasn’t upgraded at the wing, so now they have to fix it internally. You put words in my mouth because I bothered to actually disagree with you. Are you just Memphis’ Sankara?
Also, Roddy is 6’6″. He’s also a combo forward. He wouldn’t be the first 6’6″ PF in the league. Not even close. See Grant Williams and Jae Crowder. But that doesn’t change that he’s slow and incapable of defending on the wing at this point. Have you not watched him get blown past by every guard he tries to stop? Or the way he mostly plays in garbage time just so he can get minutes? He’s not ready to be a starter yet.
Also, good job ignoring everything that doesn’t support your argument and just talking yourself up and liking your own posts. Same as every other person who is like “you don’t watch my team obsessively, you know nothing”. 8Rings, Sankara, XMAXX, now you. Forget ball, you don’t know jack.
Lmaooo gassing myself up? You were the one who gloated about being a basketball fan and tried to spew stats, then got mad when I said you don’t know ball. Lol a fan of a team is always gonna know more than a casual, lets nit play pretend. Roddy is an undersized 3, if you paid attention to his play-style you would clearly see that. And lmaooo there’s a reason konchar was on the bench instead of Roddy, but I guess you know so much. Lmao Grant Williams came in at the 4 for situational purposes, and crowder is a 3/4, lmaooo I would love to see you coach a team one day. P.S. Roddy is listed at 6’5 that’s public knowledge btw smh these casuals
“A casual”, as in somebody who doesn’t watch basketball? Which isn’t me? I watch probably twice the games you do a year. Maybe three times, if you only watch Griz games. NBA League Pass. Try some. I spend as much time watching the rest of the league as I do my own team. It’s funny that you think you can talk down to me on that.
“Undersized three”, is that why he weighs 255 lbs? Has a 6’11” wingspan? That’s undersized? And he’s not a 3. Not full time. He can play the 3 in bursts, but he’s not a good shooter and doesn’t defend well on the wing. He defends better closer to the post, but not out on the perimeter and is outright negative at defending threes. He also doesn’t switch well. Because he’s SLOW.
And Konchar played more than Roddy both in minutes and starts last year, but I guess a real fan knows otherwise, huh? C’mon. Take off your rose-tinted glasses.
Whatever. I’m tired of arguing against someone like you.
Lmaooo Roddy cant shoot? Lol stop it. 6’5 is shooting guard height…. Roddy has rarely played the 4. Lol you can watch all the games you want, you still don’t watch more than true fans if the team. Lol and ooo you got me, I guess you forgot about the fact Roddy being an unproven player at the time, along with taking a little bit to get ysed to the game? Of course Konchar would have more starts and minutes, but look what happened in the playoffs. But you would know that if you watched the games instead of stat watching. Lmaooo casuals are rampant in these parts
Dillon Brooks is a great defender and one of the better perimeter defenders in the league. He’s got a wide body and he’s good at making reads. He’s doesn’t quick lateral movement but he makes up for it by reading the play and making educated guesses on where the offensive player is going. He also can play with confidence knowing that if all else fails JJJ and Adams are back there to clean things up.
To be fair PJ Tucker is the same height and 14 pounds lighter and he’s a starting PF. In fact he outweighs most 4’s and a good portion of centers.
Honestly I wouldn’t want Konchar or Roddy to start anywhere in a lineup that hopes to contend for a championship next season but unless they make another move one of them has to and it will most likely be Konchar. At least until Morant’s suspension is over and they can put Bane in that spot.
De’Andre Hunter is like the Immanuel Quickley of Hawks fans, for some reason, they think he will bring back an All-Star. No idea why.
I don’t think Knicks fans believe Quickley is going to fetch an All-Star. That said, he’s still an attractive asset that as PART of a package could help the Knicks land a star.
Thinking that Toppin was is the crazy one, not sure why other Knicks fans were so high on him. Didn’t shoot or defend particularly well. Cuts to the hoop and leaping ability is about all he offers.
Quickley can fetch a star. Cause he’s got upside and scores. Teams love scorers. Of course as part of assets.
He averaged 22.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 21 games as a starter.
Plus he’s gotten better at running the point. And the guy plays D. Plus he’s a workaholic …..
Obi1 — per 36 mins in 2022-23
avg – 17 pts, 6.4 reb, 2.3 ast
and the stats were better in 2021-22.
A player has to play mins to improve his defense. It’s the only way. Toppin didn’t get mins in NY. When he becomes a star in Indiana. You remember the fans that liked him ……… Obi is also a workaholic
Wolves fan here, can argue if I’m selling high or low but I’d move KAT right now for a Randle/Quickley package.
Other thought is a 3-team S&T moving PJ Washington to MIN with Quickley and filler/picks, KAT to NYK and something like Robinson/Fournier to CHA. Both NYK and CHA upgrade at C from where they are now, solves Hornets’ Washington problem and sets up the Wolves young core of Quickley/ANT/Jaden/PJ/Naz
DeAndre Hunter has bad knee’s.
The trade that was discussed in June went out the window with the #10 pick.
Dosen’t Luka prefer to have Dwight Powell on the floor because he likes the picks he sets?
Qàqq1
Toronto already have a better version of Hunter on their team called OG Anunoby. They don’t need him and they aren’t giving up one of their best players ever for Hunter.
I thought a Siakim deal would have to be Pascal and bigs for Trae Young as he’s come up a couple times in trade talks. The Raptors need a point guard, Hawks have 2 of them then they felt for Mills aswell.
Then the Indy story came out how they were interested but they have Toppin and Walker so it didn’t make sense but if the value of Sikaim is only Hunter then no wonder they joined the discussion.
If that’s real his value then it would make sense why Dame requested a trade too I guess. You pay Jerami Grant top dollar but you could be dealing for Siakim a multiple time all star, all nba forward who’s won a championship and is going for cheap.
If that’s really his value more teams should be talking.
Can Chicago get it done DeRozan and Patty Williams? DeRozan returns, Pattys a good prospect too. Chicago look a lot better White LaVine Caruso Siakim Vuce …
OKC, Siakim and Otto for Bertans, Dort, O. Deing, C. Wallace and a pair of first…
Raptors, Dort return to canada, Deing and Wallace two good prospects and 2 good picks.
OKC Giddey SGA Williams Siakim Chet
Portland even keeping Grant could do Simons, Little, Johnson and a first.
Dame Scoot Grant Siakim Nurkic
Sharpe Thybulle Murray
Simons is better than Hunter if that’s the going rate
As for Dallas, Capela would be a step in the right direction cause in my option you need a good 25 minutes per night defensive anchor of a centre like him. Big Val and a Nurkic are also on the market and probably cheaper alternatives.
I think Holmes will play more of the 4 spot with Kleber and Lively will be a very minor role as the back up. I guess that makes Powell just a glue guy and McGee unwanted
So is the whole Hawks roster on the trade market ……. Haaaahaa ha Ho uihihu hohi
What a mess they are. I guess this the
“Luka Curse” …….. wooooooooohhhhh
