JULY 6: Joseph is officially a Warriors, according to a press release from the club.
JULY 2: Free agent point guard Cory Joseph is headed to Golden State, having agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Warriors, agents Rich Paul and Brandon Cavanaugh tell Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link).
Joseph has been one of the NBA’s steadiest backup point guards for years, making stops in San Antonio, Toronto, Indiana, Sacramento, and Detroit during the first 12 years of his career.
He was traded from the Kings to the Pistons at the 2021 deadline and has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons in Detroit, averaging 8.1 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game with a .450/.397/.854 shooting line in 146 appearances (22.8 MPG) during that time.
Golden State’s massive team salary means the team is limited to minimum-salary offers to outside free agents this summer, and Joseph will indeed be receiving a veteran’s minimum deal, Anthony Slater of The Athletic confirms (via Twitter).
Joseph, who is entering his age-32 season, was one of the oldest players on a rebuilding Pistons squad in 2022/23. He shouldn’t be leaned on as much for veteran leadership as part of a Warriors backcourt that also features Chris Paul (38), Stephen Curry (35), Klay Thompson (33), and Gary Payton II (30), but will provide head coach Steve Kerr with an experienced, reliable backup to the team’s stars.
As Slater tweets, the Warriors’ deal with Joseph will bring them to 12 players on standard contracts. They’re not expected to carry a full 15-man roster to open the season, Slater says, but will need to add at least two more players to fill out their squad. Veteran forward Dario Saric remains on their radar, Slater adds.
Strange fit, I guess he’s Cliff Paul now
Maybe Joseph can guard AD and Jokic in next year’s Playoffs if Looney gets Injured?
I mean this Team has 18 Roster spots available to them and NOT 1 is invested in a player Taller than 6-9.
Roster malpractice.
Correct take, GangGreen23, Steve Kerr is behind this and Steve Kerr admits to enjoying losing and playing bad. Kerr needs to be fired so badly for promoting his “all smalls” lineups, they simply dont work in the NBA.
GSW saves this offseason if they get Christian Wood and Mo Bamba. They will likely get more 6’1″ guards, because of only Steve Kerr’s stupidity. Dude wants to lose.
100% Do not agree that Kerr is the problem / needs to be fired.
I’m guessing this is sacrcasm?
GangGreen, don’t believe the BS you read out there. Miami made it to the finals and their 7-footer was Cody zeller. They did fine with bam at 6-9. Just like the Warriors do fine with Looney at 6-9. You need guys that can rebound and defend and hopefully shoot.., not guys that “must be” 7 ft.
Sure it’s nice but Alex Len is going to be sitting on the end of the bench most games and most of the season. But he’s 7 ft !!
They also had 7’0″ Dedmon for 30 games. GSW is the only team in the league with no player taller than 6’9″.
They need at least 1.
Oh yes I forgot the all-star Dwayne Dedmond. Had to have him on the team because he’s 7 ft of course. Especially if AsFaninLexington is the GM. I’d rather have JaMychael Green who took a while to get going but he was pretty good the last third of the season. He’s only 6-9.
NBAisOk, you wouldn’t be good with Dario Saric and bismack biyombo who are both around 6-9?
Its a matchups league. If Miami ran into philly embiid would of went off. Miami had nothing for denver though in the finals why they signed bryant. They know they will need more size with poringer now in boston as well. Golden State needs a center badly since they are no longer a fast team they are now a half court team and one of the slower paced teams in NBA. Pair that with Curry and klay defense regression and them being one of the leaders in turnovers every year they need size for certain matchups. Lebron and ad just bullied them.
Heck the champs only had two guys in their playoff rotation over 6’10”, one of them played PG and the other didn’t play defense.
But did they win though???
He only 6’6″ but I hear that Draymond Green guy is halfway decent on defense.
Warriors just openly blocking Moses Moody, the far superior player, for no reason at all. Maybe it’s because Moody’s not short enough and Kerr wants an all under 6’3″ roster?
Just win, damnit.
Moody’s the superior player??? Have you watched the NBA? Guys don’t last 12 years unless they’re pretty good at what they do bud.
Moody improved greatly down the stretch. Looking forward to his development this coming season.
Moody is very good at NBA and isnt allowed to get playing time because he’s not 6’3″. Steve Kerr is now calling the roster shots and he only wants smalls so he can lose because he admittedly “loves losing, going 15-50 was the most fun I ever had in the NBA” = loser mentality.
Moses Moody is super good – elite ceiling. He’s the better player, he deserves 30+MPG as does Kuminga.
Uh, four titles, sounds like Steve Kerr likes to lose a bunch.
Sorry, a guy averaging less than five points a game over a two year career can not be called potentially elite and better than CoJo. Maybe some day, but settle down a bit bud.
Should be 7 titles and maybe 8 if KD stays.
Sorry, but a guy who never gets a chance due to Kerr playing 2-way scrubs over him so they lose, when they win whenever Moody gets a bigger role, means you dont know what youre talking about here. I shouldnt have to explain why a 20 year old deserves 30+ MPG over a 35 year old, but your mind is already made up if you seriously believe Kerr is about winning, its CURRY who wants to win, Curry wins in SPITE of his dumbass HC. You clearly dont watch GSW basketball, so bye Im not replying to you anymore.
If Kerr liked winning he would have put Kuminga on Lebron all series. Instead he benched him for Ty Jerome and it caused them to lose.
Oh yeah, because Kuminga was ready to handle LBJ.
Did you prefer Donte D vs Lebron? If we are going to lose either way I’d prefer the matchups were at least close.
The Warriors were linked to Malik Beasley (amongst a half dozen teams). Does this mean they won’t pursue Beasley?
Being they only have 2 roster spaces left and most of the team is under 6’5″, god I hope they don’t get Beasley.
They NEED Christian Wood and Mo Bamba. Kerr wants an entire team of Spud Webb and Mugsy Bogues. Who will win out?
Along with Earl Boykins
I would say probably not pursue Beasley. I think their guard Corps are set up. They may bring in a super young guy perhaps that Lester Quinones guy on the edge two-way contract type thing. They need Dario Saric and maybe bismack biyombo next.
Beasley doesn’t want the league minimum is why he is not on GSW. Could also mean that they are going to flip Cp3. This is just replacing Ty Jerome.
@ARC 2
I pray you are right, if they flip CP3 for bigs this team goes from meh to scary. Cory Joseph replacing Ty Jerome is the best way to put this, but still, Moses Moody should be getting 100% of the minutes Ty Jerome got. Kerr is such a coward about playing young players.
I don’t think they flip Chris paul. I think even at his age he is a Difference Maker on a winner. Even in the last couple of years he’s been asked to lead Championship contenders from the starting point guard spot.
I think he still, with a little reduced workload, can win a playoff game for you so the Warriors actually need a guy like this.
GSW Roster is now at 13, with 2 spaces left to fill. As per usual, they lack bigs. Will they use the last 2 spots on bigs? Not if moron Steve Kerr the dumbest HC in NBA history has anything to say about it! The moron cant even remember how key Andrew Bogut was to winning using this style! Cant wait to play 3-guard/all-small flawed ball all year that loses all the time!!!
Steph Curry
Klay Thompson
Draymond Green
Andrew Wiggins
Kevon Looney
Jonathan Kuminga
Chris Paul
Moses Moody
Gary Payton II
Cory Joseph
Trace Jackson-Davis
Lester Quinones
Brandin Podziemski
Can probably count on Dario Saric to sign as a backup center power forward.
Weird how you called me out over Quinones, who is literally on the roster, yet you are posting a strict rumor is actually true? Hypocrite take. Stop arguing with me, you know I’m right.
How dare he post a rumor on hoops rumors.
Right, but its fine to call me out over posting a fact?
Are posting facts not allowed?
Technically he’s not, he’s a two way
Bro put the redbull down before your thumbs get blisters. I’m not happy about the way we lost to a LA team that literally out hustled us. Not stood over us. But for you to have 30 replies to a Cory Joseph article is outrageous. You need to pull yourself together and smoke a bowl. Damn bruh
I’m not so sure they get Saric (although I hope so).
What’s taking so long?
So…
Curry won’t win 8 rings now in your opinion?
To me that was a given when they gave Draymond too much money…
What does the roster have to do with Steph being great? If they win, its literally because he’s #1 all-time. Kerr is such a handicap for him, Kerr is openly trying to lose games.
I remember how much Kerr hated winning when he played with Jordan. How much he openly showed his disdain for it. I remember him telling Jordan let’s start openly losing.
Why do you think MJ, a true winner, punched him in the face? Literally that reason.
Draymond gave them a huge discount.
You keep adding Lester Quinones to your big league 15-man roster. That’s not a given. He’s a two-way or a g League contract guy. No matter what you heard on the Warriors Twitter from one person who heard “whispers.” A lit can happen between now and Halloween night.
You should probably google his status because he’s been given a QO and still remains on the roster as of now. Internally they love him, and externally he’s literally on the team, so maybe you should do research before popping off – keep in mind Im likely older than you are next time, Gary – I know what Im talking about.
Quinones is a restricted free agent, not under contract. His qualifying offer is for a two-way deal.
Doesn’t mean they can’t negotiate a standard contract with him, but certainly no indication he’s locked into a 15-man spot yet.
Okay good information Luke. I wasn’t sure. Thanks for clarifying.
You need to chill. This is just a replacement for Ty Jerome. More still to come.
@Arc 2
You are right, but also Im mad they arent giving all of the Ty Jerome minutes to Moses Moody. Roster malpractice.
Moody can and will play a lot of small forward minutes.
He ius not going to take minutes away from Moody more likely a insurance policy in case Curry gets injured.
ARC 2 you are using logical takes but the reality is we will see a whole bunch of games with Joseph getting top 8 MPG and bench time for everyone over 6’5″ not named Draymond.
Big men are getting tougher to find lately. They were in on the Suns back up but Rockets out bid the warriors giving him a 4 year deal. There is a rumor floating around Raptors and warriors are talking a trade.
Nico Mannion has gotten a Qualifying Offer the past 3 seasons. He hasn’t played for the Warriors the past 3 seasons. It is just an offer. It is not a signed contract.
They also have another guy overseas too
Let’s GO !!!
This is actually a great pickup as a guard Off the Bench when needed. Those times when Curry is out or Chris Paul goes down and you need a veteran lead guard this guy will shine. Fantastic pick up. He can give you 20 minutes a game, shoot the three, better than a two to one assist to turn over ratio. Love it. Better than Ty Jerome that’s for sure and I think Ty got more money. Side note, can’t wait for Curry’s not retiring with eight rings to lambast my opinion of a basketball post. Going to be epic.
Not hating but this has me scratching my head a little ; even on the vet min
W/out Paul sure
No problem with the player or exp I just don’t see what function he serves with Paul in tow
I also scratched my head on Cam Reddish for the Lakers for similar reasons (fit/redundancy) so this isn’t trolling
No worries I don’t take any offense to questioning what I write. It’s all contributing to basketball talk. I actually like reading what you contribute and you’ve always been very fair. Plus you never call me a derogatory name, lol.
I think the season is so long and golden state is a little older that a guy like Cory Joseph can play 20 minutes a game here and there. I’ll even say they need a guy like this and it’s almost a godsend. Veteran guy who knows how to play.., wow, lucky to have him.
Fair, you probably know the landscape better than me w GSW
More than 1 way to skin a cat I suppose, funny as everyone in LAL town wants another Big even tho we are pretty massive already by todays standards at every position –
I want Lonnie/Beasley with the last spot (Lonnie gone now for min) over a vet min insurance C
Will be interested to see where they turn, everybody kinda has different views which I thought kinda tied in here. Tis the season to fight tooth and nail over whoes got the best 15th man in the league!
I agree. he will get open looks and should continue the efficiency he put up in Detroit.
Kerr loved in with the spurs
Trade Paul and Kuminga for Vuch and Caruso. Paul and Kuminga for Towns. Paul for Brogdon and Kornet. Paul for Melton, korkmaz, House and Dedmon. GS gets rid of Lester and sign a C or PF on a two way.
I really don’t understand why guys are so obsessed with the Warriors signing a 7 foot Center. They’ve had a lot of them. But, they haven’t won much with them. They have done quite well with 6’9″ Centers. It is really bizarre.
On hawks blogs for decades, if they don’t have a almost 7 footer, some fans stay on that topic every single day.
I agree. Bizarre.
Because they’ve never won without at least 1 guy over 6’9″ on the roster.
Looks like the Myers move will be the end of GSW legacy
To be honest and this might be a homer take I’m not sure, but so far Mike Dunleavy is correcting Meyer’s mistakes by shipping out guaranteed contract of Ryan rollins, guaranteed contract Patrick baldwin, Albatross contract of Jordan Poole, and bringing in a one-year contract of Chris Paul who will actually improve the team.
Then I think he made two decent draft picks with the guard who can shoot a little bit and then the big man at the end of the second round who fell in their lap.
Then much to my dismay he’s not rushing into signing anyone but rather waiting it out for the best guy. In my opinion Corey Joseph is a huge pickup. He’s still a good player and will serve as the 4th or 5th guard yet still play plenty as Ty Jerome did last year. Great pick up. So far so good with Dunleavy.
Boston offer Brogdon, Kornet and picks for Chris Paul
Curry for Dame
Just sign Jahil Okafor
Just sign Willie Cauly Stein
Paul for Melton, korkmaz, House and Dedmon
Klay for Harden
Micheal Pietrus and two first for Bison Dele(Brian Williams)and tell him to never get a boat and stay away from his brother
