A galvanizing Stephen Curry speech made to rally his Warriors ahead of an eventual Game 7 victory against the Kings in this year’s first round informed the team’s eventual summer ethos, writes Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.
Kawakami argues that all of the team’s front office moves since that moment, as conducted by new GM Mike Dunleavy Jr., stem from its impact. Golden State’s offseason thus far has been highlighted by its decisions to re-sign All-Defensive big man Draymond Green, move on from pricey sixth man Jordan Poole in favor of a potential one-year Chris Paul rental, and generally lean on veteran depth a bit more than the club did last year.
There’s more out of Golden State:
- Head coach Steve Kerr is relishing the chance to coach Green again on the Warriors this season, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN. “We’re really excited to have Draymond back,” Kerr said. “Given that he plays so well with Steph and Klay [Thompson], it was really a no-brainer to try to bring him back.”
- The Warriors also made a move to shore up their front line, agreeing to sign veteran floor-spacing big man Dario Saric to a one-year, minimum deal. Anthony Slater of The Athletic and Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area consider the 6’10” vet to be a decent bench defender in addition to his three-point shooting abilities.
- In a conversation on the flagship ESPN program SportsCenter (YouTube video link), Curry reflected on the addition of longtime rival Paul onto the team’s roster, as well as the subtraction of longtime GM Bob Myers, who left the Warriors this summer.
We were all afraid of Bob Myers leaving but I think Mike Dunleavy Jr has done a pretty fantastic job his first month.
The moment I heard they’d traded Poole I yelled YESSSS!!! My wife in the next room came in to see if I was OK. I must have cussed at the TV in at least half the games I watched. All directed at Poole. And I watched every single game. When the season ended I told my son they’ll never win another title with him on the team. Gary, I’m not embellishing one iota. And I honestly felt when Green punched him, although that was wrong to do, I felt there probably was a waiting line. And then he’s bopping around to his music after last loss. Anyway, I digressed but Dunleavy clearly won me over right away. And fingers crossed Paul plays enough to engineer the offense like he can and Poole couldn’t, I believe we’ll finally see the breakthroughs of KumingaMoody. All this whining about Kerr holding those 2 back ignore the fact that they played w Poole a lot. Add the Saric Paul Suns dynamic that they enjoyed…I’m very excited. Remember last summer league when Mac McClung was getting everyone excited then upset cuz they didn’t keep him? We’re now getting to see players that will be legitimate parts of gsw’s future. Podz, Santos, soon Davis and Quinones are looking to be important pieces in 2-3 years. Sorry for talking so much but this is a long way of expressing how impressively Dunleavy has started. One more piece to add and I already have faith MDJ will get a good one.
Jordan Poole won you a ring and CP3 is a lifetime loser in the NBA with not even close to a ring – stop being a coward.
Now if GS wins then Paul will have a ring. Then people will say he’s one of the best PGs ever. Not top 5. GS should sign a center now.
What’s the matter dingus? Upset that all your takes are garbage? Stop pretending to be a warriors fan.
Great post claude. Two thumbs up if I could.
“And I honestly felt when Green punched him, although that was wrong to do, I felt there probably was a waiting line. ”
Best line this month in here Claude
I wasn’t. Tired of how Meyers and Kerr were on different thoughts with the team. Looks more like they went for rookies that can help now. Meyers was into getting very raw players. Need people to contribute now.
IMO
Warriors owners should cut a check $2 million to Myers, something similar to divorce fees
Please for the love of god. Stop posting
He cannot help it he is a bot
Is that why nothing he says makes any damn sense?
How do we turn the bot off for real though?
Myers only achievement as a GM was managing all the ego during the Durant era. Myers didn’t draft or sign any players that didn’t announce ahead of time their intention to join GSW. Myers was friends with the team, and it led to terrible decision making. GSW have been a group effort in all aspects since lacob took over the team.
I know they’re saying differently right now, but the FACT is that Chris Paul is a massive loser in this league and doesn’t know how to win in the playoffs. If GSW is underperforming, he can be flipped for a better fitting player, maybe even on a similar-big money deal (another star who randomly wants out midyear – as is the norm in this league now – cant even predict who it might be).
Hey, if CP3 is the key to the second unit and GSW is in first place by the deadline, by all means keep him around. But…it’s Chris Paul…GSW fans KNOW what he does out there when it’s crunch time, we just watched Donte DiVicenczo do the exact same thing…
If a star wants out that team can do better than a version of CP3 who failed to be a positive asset for the Warriors…
You’re looking at overpaid near stars… A healthy Gordon Hayward for CP3…
Even if a star pulls a Dame and says one team only and that team is GSW… The team trading them will take the best value package…
Warriors ain’t winning it thus year…
Draymond is too big of a black hole on the salary cap… And then there’s CP3…
They’re not even good enough for ring chasers…
Says the tool with 666 in his name. Hey, grade school called..
Grade school traches science…
Where you learn that 666 is just a number…
Seems like it’s you that has to go back to grade school if a mere number effects you so negatively…
Fairy tales are meaningless in a scientific environment…
Heard that before and they still won. Warriors just need a healthy starting 5 for the playoffs and they can win it again. Health is their #1 need.
Hmm…”Warriors just need a healthy starting 5″. Yeah….and they just need to win 16 playoff games. Is that asking too much?
Warriors were young and didn’t have CP3 last time it made sense to say that…
Now they are old and have CP3…
That’s right. They are old–and very injury prone–and signed a 38-year old point guard to take them back to the championship. They haven’t improved their roster but much of the West has, and by a lot. Not a formula for success.
Bol Bol, Hassan Whiteside, Jahil Okafor, Dwight Howard, Thabeet or Bogut. Pick one
Paul is not going to be the focus of the offense. He’s not going to need to have an amazing game, every game, for this team to win. While I sort of agree, he’s never been on a winning team, players don’t win and lose championships, teams do.
For me it’s more about the wasted resources that CP3 represents…
Much like the Draymond deal it really hampers a team that isn’t title favourites…
Ring chasers only go to teams that stand a high chance of winning the title… Not a team that has a higher chance of having 70 odd million sitting on the bench injured…
IMO Paul will be flipped at the deadline for multiple veteran role players who fit whatever the biggest need is at that point.
That said, I don’t know the current rules for when they can trade Paul.
Jayce Johnson is a center on the summer league team. sign him with Collins and Davis at PG. GS
Cost them a shot at Dame gettin Cp3. That’s already a fireable offense
dodgers, they weren’t going to and couldn’t get Dame. Paul had no bearing on any Dame get. What you and many just don’t get is that Poole was not highly regarded around the league. Portland had no desire to trade for Poole. And no other team did either so some 3 way trade wasnt a possibility. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Nada chance EVER to get Lilliard.
Better to have Chris than Poole. Just not enough imo. I hope Warriors stay healthy. Makes the West more competitive.
Dario Saric and Joseph make a lot of sense for this team also. When they won it their bench had a bunch of 30 year old reserves Otto porter, Juan Tuscano Anderson, Bjelica. A bunch of guys who have been around a little bit. Same this year.
They screwed up last year trying to integrate the young guys who weren’t ready. The starting five had the best numbers in the NBA by a long long shot then the bench was horrendous. This year will be different I hope. Fingers crossed !!
