The Wizards have officially traded point guard Chris Paul to the Warriors, completing a deal that was first reported on draft day. The Warriors confirmed the move in a press release (Twitter link).
In exchange for Paul, Washington received guards Jordan Poole and Ryan Rollins, forward Patrick Baldwin Jr., the Warriors’ 2030 first-round pick (top-20 protected), Golden State’s 2027 second-round pick, and cash, per a Wizards announcement.
One of the most accomplished point guards in NBA history, Paul holds career averages of 17.9 points, 9.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game on .472/.369/.870 shooting in 1214 regular season appearances across 18 NBA seasons. His 13.9 PPG in 2022/23 represented a career low, but he still shot the ball well (.440/.375/.831) and contributed 8.9 APG, 4.3 RPG and 1.5 SPG in 59 regular season contests.
In Golden State, CP3 will team up with Warriors stars Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green in search of his first NBA championship. Golden State will also create long-term cap flexibility in the deal by replacing Jordan Poole’s four-year, $123MM+ extension with Paul’s pseudo-expiring $30.8MM contract. Paul is under contract for 2024/25 too, but his $30MM salary for that season is non-guaranteed.
The Wizards, who initially acquired Paul from the Suns in their Bradley Beal blockbuster, will roll the dice on Poole and a pair of 2022 draftees while also securing a pair of draft assets in the deal.
Because draft picks can’t be protected more than seven years out, the Warriors’ top-20 protected 2030 first-round pick won’t roll over to 2031 if it doesn’t convey in ’30. The exact terms of the protection aren’t yet known, but I expect Washington will instead receive Golden State’s 2030 second-rounder if that first-rounder lands in the top 20.
You can read more about this trade in our initial June report.
Warriors did not waive and stretch Paul because they want to pay more tax
Heat, Celtics and Lakers are in Finals or Conf Finals. They let players go to save tax
Come on, Heat
Come on, Celtics
Bos and Mia are paying taxes and up against the “silver medal “ apron 2 currently
You gotta small point w Jeanie who looks to be clutching the purse a tad
* I’m betting there wasn’t anyone Happier w the new Cba than Jeanie – She didn’t want to. Ever get in the ring w Ballmer or face the backlash if she didn’t , now Silver makes a comfortable bed fir her to settle into – Don’t think it took her long to Cast her vote
They are not waiving Paul because they want to win.
That’s what I thought, Luke, since picks can’t be traded further than seven years out. I’d guess a better way to look at it would be the highest Warriors’ 2030 pick that is protected from 1-20. It’s similar to saying that the classic placeholder asset is a pick protected from 1-55.
Getting Baldwin was a good job by the Wizards. He might not ever be anything but he was a 1st round pick last year
He showed a lot in what few, unfavorable lineups the idiot Kerr used him in last year. I’m sure a HC who doesn’t refuse to coach players over 6’6″ will get the best out of him.
No matter how many times you repeat this nonsense, it will never be true. Stop pretending to be a warriors fan.
Uh oh, Highway, you did it now. You disagreed with 8rings/A’sfan/marty. Here come the insults.
@8rings That is the most ignorant thing you have ever said. Kerr doesn’t want to coach anyone over 6’6″? Just look at their coaching staff will tell you how stupid that statement is. Of course you won’t spot it.
TJD will be the best player in the whole transaction. He’ll be a solid role player for years to come. He’s An athletic kevan looney
@Shawn One scouting website compared him to Draymond.
WSH getting that GSW 2030 FRP is likely just about Winger wanting to say he got a FRP in the trade, after taking heat for not getting any FRPs in the Beal trade. Top 20 protected, plus Fill or Kill in a draft 7 years away? I’d prefer the 2030 swap that SAS got in their 3-teamer. A speculative asset should at least have some upside.
In *a trade
Agreed , i actually kinda like the ( very small ) gamble SAS took there . I didn’t know there were so many 2 nd rd lovers in here , caused quite a stir for something I thought was pretty straight – forward
SRPs have their place in building out a roster, or sustaining one. But I never considered them primary trade assets. Lately they’ve been used as that in volume, I’m guessing because so few teams in the market for players still have tradable FRPs. Regardless of why, if 4 or 5 SRPs are being accepted where a FRP used to be required, it behooves a team to keep some around (you don’t have to value them yourself, as a draft pick).
SAS’s moves the last few years haven’t excited me. The 2030 Swap right seemed to fall into that category as well, but it’s like an old school LEAP on a IPO, almost impossible to value, but if you have some extra cash around, why not? On the flip side they gave up 4 SRPs and cap space. Could they have been used over the next years for young players (Bey, Wiseman) and rotation pieces (Payton)? Certainly not worthless. Cap space is certainly not worthless. If they actually like Bullock, Osman and Stevens, then its a little different. But the salary floor is not a reason to add salary in the summer.
All true but I think it all loses its underlying values when you have too much cap/ not enough roster spots avail moving forward .. A team like Bos for sure, points well taken , and good job of them. Stockpiling while team building / savvy
Hou realized early and I give them credit for that ( even hating the price points )
But okc will take all the credit here when they stumble into the WCF one year and all will be forgotten; all the pitfalls and unenviable hoops that were jumped thru to get there –
VW probably changes that all ( by luck ) but I can’t say I saw a plan brewing pre lottery balls …. Perhaps it’s just hard for the front office to charge gears so fast ( 40 days ) from being ( wannabe) losers to winners … still not the free agency id want If I was a SaS Fan
GSW are too cool for Poole.
Poole can’t shoot, can’t defend, and turns the ball over all the time. Why keep him?
Couldn’t agree more, plus there were times when he thought he could drop shots like Steph..
