The Heat have been counting on a productive summer from Nikola Jovic after back issues disrupted his rookie season, writes Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel. The 27th pick in the 2022 draft displayed flashes of talent, but physical concerns limited him to 15 games, plus seven short appearances in the playoffs.
Coach Eric Spoelstra said the organization put Jovic on a rehab and weight-training program to get him ready for the offseason. He was impressive during Summer League and now is one of the leaders of Serbia’s World Cup team.
“This is exactly the type of summer and offseason that he needed, to be able to play, to be able to participate in all of our Summer League practices and play in those Summer League games against high-level competition,” Spoelstra said. “And we didn’t know necessarily how the Serbian team would shake out. And it’s turned out to be marvelous for him.”
The absence of Nikola Jokic and Vasilije Micic, along with an injury to Filip Petrusev, means Serbia will need more production from Jovic, who scored nine points in 24 minutes in Saturday’s win over China. The Serbians are playing in Manila, which puts Jovic close to Spoelstra, an assistant coach with Team USA.
“He’s getting a great opportunity,” Spoelstra said. “They had about a two-and-half-, three-week training camp, with the exhibition games included. He’s been able to play in all of those games. We were able to send our staff out and see a week of his training camp. And we’re in the same place right now. He’s only about five, 10 miles away — with traffic that could end up being about 45 minutes. But we are definitely getting together while we’re out here.”
There’s more on the Heat:
- The World Cup experience gives Spoelstra a chance to connect with some of the NBA’s best young players, Winderman points out in a separate story. There have been plenty of cases where relationships built in international competitions spilled over to the NBA, with the Heat benefiting from the most famous example of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who played together in the 2008 Olympics.
- If Damian Lillard isn’t dealt to Miami before training camp starts, the Trail Blazers could turn into a “circus” with the young backcourt of Scoot Henderson and Anfernee Simons uncertain of what their roles will be, Winderman states in a mailbag column. He also suggests that the Heat may be better than expected without a Lillard trade, as Tyler Herro will enter camp fully healthy and will be joined by free agent additions Josh Richardson and Thomas Bryant, rookie Jaime Jaquez and a better version of Jovic.
- As the Lillard standoff continues, the Heat may be preparing for another waiting game involving Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Winderman writes in another piece. In a recent interview, Antetokounmpo said he’ll wait until next summer to decide on an extension and wouldn’t commit to a long-term future in Milwaukee.
Portland is just hurting themselves. Miami is the only team willing to take Liliard on that contract. Maybe the Lakers. By holding out all their doing is frustrating the team and the fans. Portland is the type of team that can overcome a toxic environment.
And you’re the type of toxic fan that no one around here can stand.
Agreed Captain Jack,
Taking a suckers deal from Miami is what would hurt Portland. There are other teams that would take on Lillard’s contract, Dame’s just got to stop threatening not to show up if one of those clubs deals for him.
FACTS
Completely right Kurtis. Just do the trade and start over. Fresh start for everyone. Who cares about a extra 1st or a all star talent, Lillard and Portland ( except never building a championship team) have both been good to each other. In past trades you could throw in future considerations. Portland already has a great start to a rebuild. Then trade Grant, Nurkic, Simons and Thybulle ( keep everyone else) for young talent or picks with bad contracts. Mostly need a good young SF, young PF and young C starting talent. Sign veterans on the bench. Tank one year and get a good pick next year. Just get the cloud out from Portland. Just do something good. Why Is everyone so greedy today? Portland you failed for years to build a contender and now you dangle him around like a worm, waiting for a bite
Almost any team in the NBA can put together $36m in salaries to send to Portland to get Dame. The ONLY thing that matters is where Dame is willing to play.
Try 45 million. And Blazers have to want the offer. They are on record at wanting at least (3) #1 picks.
I see 76s Harris, Melton and Maxey with picks for Lillard . Tell Harden to apologize. Maybe make one more trade and sign players willing to take the minimum for a chance for a Ring. Wolves trade Conley, Edwards , McDaniel and Naz Reid for Lillard and Nurkic and a pick. Lillard for Lowry, Jaime Jaquez, Jovic, Orlando Robinson, future considerations with 3 or 4 first. Any?
No one else is taking Dame. Most can’t make the trade cause of the money. Doesn’t mean they have to give him away. Heat are not trying to Bamboozle Blazers.
Dame is 34 yrs old. Wizards just gave away Beal for bird seed. And he’s 29. This is just the ugly side of business. Another team has to step in and take Herro ……. It will happen
For bird seed lol
Almost any team in the NBA can make the trade. I don’t know where this stupid meme comes from. You don’t have to take his whole salary into cap room. You can trade players back! It’s pretty cool. In fact that’s what the Heat would be doing. There isn’t a team in the league that can’t put together $36m in salary to send to Portland. Question is whether Portland wants what you have to offer (which is the same question with Miami as anyone else).
Name a team that would take him. And give away 45 mill in players. Plus picks . And still compete for a title. Get a new calculator and view. There is not a playoff team from last yr that can or would do it.
Lakers …. Don’t have players or picks
Mavs …. Don’t have players or picks
Kings …. Don’t have players or picks
Warriors …. Don’t have players or picks
Clippers …. Don’t have players or picks
Nuggets …. Why ????
OKC …. Why ????
Grizz ….. really
TWolves ….. really
Pelicans …… really
Suns ….. really
Must I Go On ….. no Knicks don’t want him. And he doesn’t get us to Finals.
There isn’t a team in the world besides the Heat. That can make this trade. And that means they will give value. And they still can have a contenting team. To challenge for a Title. Dame is about next year. You must not understand what that means.
Lowry, Jovic, Jaime Jaquez, Orlando Robinson, future considerations and every pick within reason for Lillard
Along with three 1st. Just do it and start over fresh in good karma for once
This is the perfect trade right?
1st piss off Walton and now Lillard. Horrible team management just like the wolves just with one championship
