The Heat have signed Justin Champagnie, the team tweets.
While terms were not disclosed, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reports that it’s an Exhibit 10 deal (Twitter link). The addition of Champagnie gives Miami a full 21-man camp roster.
The Celtics waived him at the beginning of the month.
Champagnie, 22, appeared in two regular season and four postseason games for Boston last season. He signed a two-year, minimum-salary contract in April but it was non-guaranteed for the upcoming season. He was due a $50K guarantee if he had remained on Boston’s roster.
Champagnie could earn a little more money via the maximum Exhibit 10 bonus. If he’s waived by the Heat and then spends at least 60 days with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, their G League affiliate, he could earn a $75K bonus.
After going undrafted out of Pittsburgh in 2021, the 6’6″ swingman inked a two-way deal with the Raptors for the 2021/22 season. The team brought him back aboard for 2022/23, but after he had appeared in just three games for Toronto, he was cut in December.
In a procedural move, the Heat also signed and then waived center Brandon McCoy, who played for the Skyforce last season.
Let’s goooo! I was disappointed when the Celtics got him, and really surprised when they let him go, despite them also lucking into Banton and drafting Walsh
I wanted Cain on a standard deal, but having both in general is a really nice circumstance I was looking at near the end of last season, and I’ve really liked Champagnie since his first summer league with Toronto, and just really see him as a Heat player, and a fit for something they’ve needed for a few years
A little disappointed in Audige not trying to win a spot in our culture, b/c I really liked him, but this makes up for it a little, obviously at a different position
I like Alondes Williams, but Audige has more versatility and is a better shooter
Lucked into Banton? A guy who couldn’t crack a roster that had basically no PG. Yeah. What a steal
A guy used wrong and that should have never been let go by Toronto, that they got cheaply, and in a situation where they could use his skillset on their roster…so ya
How many times do you need to see these players I’m talking about be extremely big contributors to realize that there are more players in the NBA than just superstars
Exactly! Look what happened to Lauri Markkanen and Rui Hachimura. Both weren’t being used right or at all & got traded and now are producing big time. Hoping Dalano Banton is the same and produces well for the Celtics. Go Celtics!
Great point just like when the Celtics didn’t use Max Strus right! Ahahahahaha!!!! Go Heat!!!
And back then, I was told to stop talking about guys like Max Strus, and nobody knows who that is…gets paid $64 million
Talked about Austin Reaves for more than a full year after day 1 in summer league, and people sh@+ on me for it, and now they $_@% his 6!@&
The two-way slot isn’t open for him now since Jamal Cain accepted his two-way QO, but the Heat could be preparing their depth in case they swing a deal for Dame. I’m not sure I see that happening, though. I think there’s a good shot that both Lillard and Harden start the season where they are.
Wait…how did the Heat complete their camp roster before having 14 standard guys? I thought that was the whole reason Swider and Peterson were verbal commitments
The Celtics had Max Strauss in Summer League and the Heat got him and made him into a rotation player. The Heat are excellent in doing this. Hope Justin Champagne makes it. I liked how he jumps twice for a board. All he needs to do is make his threes. But Celts have to make tough decisions like all teams. Still the Heat does stick it to us. Jeepers. Go Celtics!
Should sign Brandon McCoy
