Free agent shooting guard R.J. Hunter has reached an agreement with the Hornets, agent Daniel Hazan tells Chris Haynes of TNT and Bleacher Report (Twitter link). It’s a one-year, non-guaranteed deal, tweets Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer.
The 29-year-old last played in the NBA in 2018/19 when he appeared in one game with the Celtics on a two-way contract. He had short stays with a series of overseas teams since then, but sat out last season with a ruptured left patellar tendon he suffered in 2022 while playing in Australia for the Sydney Kings.
Boston selected Hunter with the 28th pick in the 2015 draft, but he was waived after just one year. He signed with the Bulls before the start of the 2016/17 season, but only got into three games before being released. He also appeared in five games with the Rockets on a two-way deal.
The addition of Hunter, along with the recent signing of Frank Ntilikina, will bring Charlotte up to 16 players on standard deals. They also have a pair of players on two-way contracts.
In it to win it
I hope he can bring that 17.0 to the Hornets
GSU represent!
A 30 Year old garbage, who was struggling to make it overseas & coming off a serious injury. The Hornets’ FO always find a way to totally waste even the end of the roster opportunities. Zero upside move.
Maybe they are looking for a specialist. He was supposed to be a good shooter
Almost everyone deserves a second chance
This is his sixth NBA chance…
And he is constantly awful in the one thing where he’s a “specialist”… There’s a reason he even called himself a “Trash brother”…
I always wonder when people still holding hope for complete failures, especially when we’re talking about a 30 years old dude…
Don’t celebrate when he hits a shot for your team, then.
He called himself the trash brother?
Yep, him and James Young were the Trash Brothers. They called themselfs that way jokingly (with irony) because their constant awful play even in SL and D-League. Although Young was way better (which is still bad)
I remember this is when the Celtics were hoarding draft picks and had to many and Hunter and Demetrius Jackson were cut the next season because Danny A had to many picks and they were not giving a chance really after. I believe Hunter got injured. Even if you are old you can always turn it around
I’m watching basketball for multiple decades now, but never saw one player that was bad for lower leagues at 29 then became a decent NBA player at 30+
There are comebacks and late bloomers, but not in this case. I don’t want to offend Hunter, but that’s a pretty bad “bet” for the Hornets, even at their standards. There are hundreds of players with more sense for the training camp. Won’t make much sense for the Swarm either.
