The Warriors will have members of the Kerr family coaching both their NBA and G League teams in 2023/24, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, who reports (via Twitter) that Nick Kerr is being promoted to become the head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s NBAGL affiliate.
Nick is the son of Steve Kerr, Golden State’s longtime head coach. The younger Kerr played college ball at San Diego and Cal from 2011-16 before deciding to get into coaching.
Nick worked in the Spurs’ video room during the 2017/18 season, then joined the Warriors as an assistant video coordinator in 2018. He spent three years in the team’s video room, earning a promotion to head video coordinator, before becoming a part of Santa Cruz’s coaching staff. He served as an assistant under head coach Seth Cooper for the last two seasons (2021-23).
Slater previously reported that Cooper would be changing roles this offseason, having been named as one of two co-leaders of Golden State’s revamped player development program. His transition opened up the head coaching job in Santa Cruz.
Typical
The coach’s son thing has been going on since the beginning of time. It happens in Youth League, it happens in high school, and it happens in the pros. Those who don’t have that advantage have to work harder and what’s wrong with that? I can think of a lot of benefit to working hard and improving even if it doesn’t manifest in the coaches son scheme at the moment.
But how about when the opportunity comes when the coach’s son fails either as a player or professionally? The one who has prepared will be ready to step in.
I’m great with video production too. Can I get a job as a coach?
How were your last 2 years as assistant coach?
#nepotism4eva
This is his reward for the Draymond leak
Unfortunate name, I feel for the broadcasters.
Great call out lol
Someone gonna get fired like Glen kuiper
do Knicks broadcasters struggle call team the knickerbockers? I’m curious as to why there was a need to point this out. Or the thought to begin with….
Knicks and Nick Kerr and very different. Oddly enough I remember when Kobe died and news anchor dropped an n bomb on live tv and claimed it was because she mixed lakers and knicks together…. So yes historically that has been an issue. Take your knight armor and ride on.
I’ve known for some time his sons name is nick. But in spite of historical issues, I never thought of the potential for a Glenn Kuiper type slip up. I guess I just don’t think the way some of you do. No, I’m not on a knights high horse, again, I just don’t think that way. Maybe cuz I’m not 12. Heck, who knows. But I had never heard of a bonercat. So I googled it:
boner cat
The cat that always seems to show up, purring, whenever you have a boner, and proceeds to watch you
This explains a few things….
Yeaaaah….dont you HAVE to go by Nicholas at this point?
Yeah why can’t he just go by Nicholas lol
His legal name is actually Nick, not Nicholas. Though he could go by Nicholas if he really wanted to.
I want to hear that explanation by Steve on the insistence for Nick vs Nicholas. Better be a good one.
What’s his name!!??
Nepotism puts money in your pocket! Chip Carey sucks but he has a job. But Ernie Johnson is better than his dad. We shall see how he does.
Joe Buck is the worst.
Goodness Steve, very disappointing!
You talk about fairness, equity, inclusion, etc activism and you pull this??! Gimme a break!
How in the world did he get the job with Spurs in the first place? Was that position open to others and Nick got the job fairly? He might be good but let the kid get the experience elsewhere and EARN it! Goodness, man…. It’s one thing to have connection, but the whole nba is … they just try to all keep it in their family.
Do I hear a NBA and G league championship??
Kirk Lacob and now Nick Kerr. The Warriors are light years ahead of the the rest of the league in nepotism.
Here’s my favorite quote if someone feels like they’re held back by nepotism, or anything else for that matter.
“Be so good they can’t ignore you.”
-Steve Martin.
Understood…
That being said, I’m disgusted at Steve. This is very diappointing and it’s totally against what he has been advicating and/or Warriors culture. Disapppinted at local media as well for not talking about Nick the last few yrs. They have all been covering for Steve and Nick all these yrs. Now that Nick is head coach, who in the media will call Steve out?? Why didnt Nick get a real job? At another company? Why did Steve think it was ok for Nick to take another person’s opportunity? It would have been legit if Nick worked elsewhere. Think about how his co-workers felt last few yrs…. Shame on you Steve! You have let all your fans down! :(
