Appearing on ESPN’s NBA Today on Wednesday (YouTube link), Warriors head coach Steve Kerr discussed the addition of point guard Chris Paul and what he can bring to the team, highlighting Golden State’s turnover issues in 2022/23 and the future Hall-of-Famer’s ability to take care of the basketball.
As Tim Bontemps of ESPN writes, Paul has never come off the bench in his lengthy career. Following Team USA’s practice on Friday, Kerr brushed aside that topic, noting that it will be a matter for a future date.
“I think that’ll be a case where you get three weeks of training camp before that first game,” Kerr said. “We’ll just look at all kinds of different combinations.
“The main thing is we know all those guys are gonna play a lot of minutes. But the luxury of having Chris Paul to add to this group that we’ve been lucky enough to have for a decade … pretty remarkable. He is one of the great competitors in the game. He’s one of the great point guards of all time. I think he’s a great addition for us, because of his ability to control games, control tempo, take care of the ball.”
Here’s more from the Pacific Division:
- Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga believes he’s primed for a breakout season in 2023/24, he told Leonard Solms of ESPN at the Basketball Without Borders camp in South Africa. “This upcoming season is definitely the year,” Kuminga said. “A lot of people are expecting so much from me – and myself; I’m expecting a lot. It’s a lot of pressure, but I don’t really pay attention to the noise. The pressure is always going to be there. It’s just [on] me to go out there and perform.” The former lottery pick also discussed mentoring his fellow African countrymen and the importance he places on “growing as a person,” per Solms.
- What can the Suns expect from free agent addition Drew Eubanks? Gerald Bourguet explores that question in detail for PHNX Sports, writing that the big man’s shot blocking, mobility, foot work, athletic finishing, solid screening, and physicality are positive traits he’ll bring to his new club.
- The Clippers selected former Missouri forward Kobe Brown with the 30th overall pick in June’s draft. They’ve been impressed with Brown’s versatility and willingness to make winning plays, according to Andrew Greif of The Los Angeles Times. “He can do a lot of things without having the ball in his hands, as you saw,” Summer League coach Dahntay Jones said. “…He can do a bunch of different things to complement the cast that we have already. He knows he’s a basketball player first. He doesn’t hang his hat on scoring. He hangs his hat on having a positive effect on the game of basketball.”
CP3 really is a great fit in that if it works and he replaces Jordan Poole while not losing his offense (or someone else improving theirs, like Moody to cover Poole), then GSW gets a much better defender and the point gawd. And if he stinks or causes lockeroom issues or just acts like a loser, then his overpaid butt can be flipped for almost anyone.
Kuminga’s ceiling is Lebron. Kerr needs to start building around Kuminga.
Kuminga’s ceiling is nowhere close to LeBron…Come on now..lol
I like Kuminga, his athleticism, and admire his skillset just as much as the next guy, but let’s be realistic here…
His highs are great, but he’s incredibly inconsistent. Until he’s comfortable in his role, and learns how to maximize his opportunities on a consistent basis, he will never reach his full potential.
I think he could easily become an excellent and versatile defender, a very good rebounder, and someone that’s efficient from the floor while giving you 15-20 points a night.
I could easily see him as Jaylen Brown type, but one that doesn’t shoot quite as well, and plays a bit bigger..Like a Jimmy Butler lite, but one that doesn’t score as consistently
“Kuminga’s ceiling is LeBron” No, not anywhere close and it’s not fair to Kuminga. At 20 years old LeBron was putting up 27/7/7 and anyone could see barring injuries he was going to live up to the hype and be one of the greatest of all time.
Kuminga, not so much. I see maybe a more athletic Harrison Barnes type of player. That’s not in anyway a knock on Kuminga as Barnes has had a solid but unspectacular career.
Yeah, I could see Kuminga’s career playing out like Harrison Barnes. I could see him having a career much like Luol Deng, if he can become a little more consistent 3-pt. shooter.
He has a very high ceiling, but he’s too up and down to be abke to reach his full potential. If he can improve year over year, he could become a bit like Jimmy Butler, but I don’t see him truly having that dawg mentality in him to make the necessary improvements that it would take to become that high of a caliber player..
Kuminga has shown some touch, he shot .370 on 2.2 attempts per from deep last season. He turns the ball over too much for a guy who is suppose to shoot it or move it along.
It’s not fair to compare LeBron to Kuminga at this stage. LeBron had more opportunity to play. The Cavs were going nowhere. So, he could make a lot of young player mistakes. The Dubs were a defending championship team. He was on a much shorter leash. It is never a good idea to judge how a player’s career is going to turn out after only a couple of seasons.
CP3 isn’t much of a defender at this point.
Kuminga ceiling isn’t lebron. At best he’s another Draymond Green with a little more offense.
He shows non of the full court vision and passing of Green. That is more innate than coached.
He’s no Draymond Green, Dude can’t pass nor run a defense.
That is funny saying he is Draymond Green when his defense is not even close. Right now Kuminga is Oubre a guy with a lot of talent but hasn’t put it together. His potential is not LeBron but more of a Nuggets Gordan.
I didn’t say he is draymond green. I did say his ceiling is draymond green.
“Kuminga ceiling isn’t lebron. At best he’s another Draymond Green”
Currently no.
But that’s his ceiling if he develops. Hard to develop when you play sporadic minutes.
He’s also 20 going into his 3rd year in the league.
Sheesh!! Poole was the locker room problem. They won’t have to worry about replacing Poole’s offense. The guy gave up to many points and turned the ball over to much. That solves half the problems they had last season.
Kuminga is Lebron and Moody is Kawhi… says only one person on the face of the earth. A person who obviously knows nothing about basketball.
Give the kuminga 30 minutes a game he will drop min 20 points 6 rbs and 4 assists
I think he will be the sixth man. Should average 15 a game this year possibly
I know people don’t want to hear anything about guards. Yuri Collins led the NCAA in assists per game 10 a game and Davis scored 21 for Memphis in NCAA Last season. They should be signed on two ways. They also need one young tall center. Iggy would be good for them in the locker room. He doesn’t need minutes. Give it to Kuminga and Moody. Collins, Davis, Moody, Kuminga, pod, Jackson-Davis, Lester and a young center signed, that is good for young talent. Maybe Corey Joseph can be waived.
