The Warriors should consider a reunion with JaVale McGee once he gets waived by the Mavericks, writes Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. Dallas reportedly plans to use the stretch provision on the remainder of McGee’s contract, so he would have to be let go before the deadline to do that arrives at the end of the month.
The 35-year-old center spent two seasons with Golden State and was part of title-winning teams in 2017 and 2018. Although he averaged less than 10 minutes per game in both years, he made valuable contributions as a rebounder and rim protector off the bench.
Johnson points out that McGee would be the only seven-footer on a roster that needs size, and his understanding of the team’s culture could give him an edge in filling one of the final spots. With Kevon Looney and Draymond Green handling most of the minutes at center, McGee wouldn’t have to play extensively and he could help tutor young players such as Trayce Jackson-Davis.
There’s more on the Warriors:
- Former Golden State players Juan Toscano-Anderson and Kent Bazemore are part of a group that was scheduled to work out for the team this month. If the Warriors are planning to bring back someone who has played for coach Steve Kerr, Johnson sees Toscano-Anderson as the best candidate because he’s younger and more versatile than Bazemore or McGee.
- Dario Saric‘s performance in helping Croatia win an Olympic pre-qualifying tournament demonstrated why he was Golden State’s top free agent target this summer, Johnson adds in a separate story. Saric posted 22 points and 11 rebounds in the final game, and Johnson notes that he looked like a perfect fit for Kerr’s system. He seems fully recovered from the torn ACL he suffered in the 2021 NBA Finals, and he had plenty of experience running the two-man game with new Warriors guard Chris Paul in Phoenix.
- Newly promoted assistant coach Kris Weems will have a large role in determining how successful Paul will be in his first year with the team, according to Connor Letourneau of The San Francisco Chronicle. Weems, who was promoted to the front of the bench after two years as a player development coach, replaces Jama Mahlalela, who was responsible for determining who was on the court at any given time.
Used to We Believe
Now ?
We light the Beam
We believe was the 07 Warriors and they didn’t win a thing. Oh sorry they won the first round then got spanked by utah in round 2
Warriors have four championships since that era starting around 2015 Squad. Four championships in 9 years I think.
Light the beam I think is Sacramento is it not? Yep they’re going to be good again this year probably have a better record than the Warriors or close to it. It’s all about the playoffs though.., May the best team win. Love the Kings though, I think they’re looking good.
TB3
I hope they would get back Mcgee or JTA.
McGee is the right choice for Warriors. Can definitely help their D and rebounding. Plus after Mavs stint. I’m sure he wants to show out and go out on a high note.
JaVale McGee is an okay choice. But why go for “okay” when you could possibly hold out for “good?”
Also he was a little more athletic 6 years ago. He signed with the Warriors at age 29 and hungry to prove himself, whereas now perhaps at 35 he’s an aging veteran prolonging his career because he still can. If you look at after his time with the Warriors he signed a nice contract with the Lakers and had a decent role for them. Good minutes too.
He hasn’t played much for Mavs. And he was a big part of that Laker Chip. So he should definitely be worth a look. Considering he knows the system. He played 17 mins for Lakers. Warriors would be fine with 12-15. It’s the playoffs where they will need him most. Todays NBA is all about depth. All top teams have it. Warriors need a big.
JTA to dubs, McGee to Lakers unless Wood takes a discount.
How can you discount the minimum ?
McGee has chronic, severe asthma. There were pics of him using inhalers on the GSW bench. THAT’S WHY he has not been/ can’t be a long-duration centerpiece. I loved his contributions those two years…plus by all accounts he’s a funny and great dude. Time moves on.
Saric !!!
Kent Bazemore is done.
JTA: you could do worse but I don’t think they’ll give him a roster spot.
JaVale Mcgee? Not sure what the dubs do here. Warriors May pick him up as big man insurance or do they keep the spot open for someone else who falls through the cracks as JaVale has, that’s a little bit better player?
Wood need to come to the Golden State on a Min contract and after they win the Championship… Go get that bigger money elsewhere or resign again to go back to back… wishful thinking
All the warriors need from a center is rebounding, screen setting, and passing. Wood can do none of those things
Trayce Jackson-Davis !
McGee has looked horrible since 2019-2020. At his best, he was a trade off between the ocassional sensational play and the inevitable missed assignments and dumb plays. He might still fit in GSW, he was effective in his first stint there. But that was a while ago.
