As first reported by Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports, the Sixers have interest in trading for veteran guard Jrue Holiday, who is being sent to Portland as part of the Damian Lillard blockbuster. Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer confirms Neubeck’s report, and says James Harden — who hopes to land with the Clippers — would be involved in a possible deal.
Holiday spent his first four NBA seasons with the Sixers, who selected him 17th overall back in 2009. According to Pompey’s sources, Philadelphia tried to trade for Holiday multiple times during his seven-year stint with New Orleans from 2013-20.
Moving Harden before Monday’s Media Day and next week’s training camp would avoid a messy situation, and the team has said it wants an All-Star caliber player or draft assets in return for the former MVP. As a five-time All-Defensive member and a two-time All-Star, Holiday fits that bill, Pompey notes.
A three-team deal that sends Harden to the Clippers, Holiday to the Sixers, and a first-round pick from each club to the Trail Blazers seems like it could be a good move for all parties, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, who reports that L.A. has thus far only been willing to give up one first-rounder for Harden. Still, as Fischer observes, maybe the Clippers will just end up going after Holiday instead.
The Heat are another Eastern Conference contender who have long valued Holiday, sources tell Fischer. League executives were speculating about Holiday being sent to Miami in the aftermath of the deal, Fischer adds, though it’s worth pointing out that Portland and Miami haven’t had much dialogue this offseason, despite Lillard hoping to land with the Heat.
The Celtics are expected to consider a pursuit of Holiday as well, reports Adam Himmselsbach of The Boston Globe (via Twitter). That’s an interesting, though not surprising rumor — the team has been trying to mend fences with Malcolm Brogdon, who was nearly sent to the Clippers this offseason. Brogdon ($22.5MM) would basically have to be involved in any package for Holiday ($36.86MM) for salary-matching purposes.
If the prolonged Lillard saga is any indication, Portland’s front office could be patient in looking for the best possible return for Holiday, Fischer notes.
Cmon bulls, take him. Jrue to bulls, ddr to knicks, knicks player and pick to portland. I love ddr, but he only has 1 year left.
Representative for Portland here, we’d be happy to take DDR might need a little sweetener like our pick back
As a Holiday fan I’d love to see him in Boston so he could still compete and the Celtics could pull it off. Brogdon, Horford, Pritchard and picks for Holiday.
Not sure there’s any all stars in that group nor the picks that would be attractive (high 20s). Portland can do much better elsewhere.
How many teams that would be interested in Holiday would have draft picks in the lottery after acquiring him?
Not really it’s a high salary
sixers been trying to trade for holiday ever since… they traded him
LAC should be going hard after Holiday; not figuring out a way to get him to PHI and wind up with Fatso.
I know I’m greedy but Lakers need Jrue.
they dont have the salaries to trade for him till dec 15
Clips- but they don’t have young intriguing players. Portland has no need for Mann or Bones. Boston hasn’t played enough to show a worth. Zubic would be behind Ayton.
Heat makes sense they need to use Lowry’s contract to get better. Use picks in the deal.
76ers but Harden would need to be moved to a 3rd team.
Bulls have nothing of value and will need to blow that team up, build through draft.
Magic building young they are not at that point yet to make a leap. Need to move guard logjam for wings, Jrue is not a wing.
Kings are my sleeper for him if they want to get off of Kevon Heuter. I think they have exception from Holmes trade. He is what they need from Mitchell.
Kings don’t have an exception that fits Jrue
The Kings wouldn’t need an exception. Barnes, Huerter and picks would work.
Nice post – still think Orl could be a Big sleeper tho
I like Tor as the favs but an extension is going to have to be conjured up in short order
Think Mia is still very doable as well and wouldn’t shock me to see him in heat camp by mid next week
Brk would be fun, waive enough of that late Phx unprotected juice in front of them you might even be able to do a 1-1 with BS. That Nets team would get my league pass eyeballs frequently
Kings are a great fit. They’d finally get that defensive master that they need. Blazers can flip Huerter + whoever for some more assets.
Toronto should be trying desperately to land Holiday unless they decide to blow things up right before camp. They could work out a trade sending Anunoby to the Knicks while they send draft assets and Toronto sends out Gradey and Boucher/Thad Young to Portland. The Knicks could definitely use OG’s defense and spacing, and OG might be more willing to stick to a team with a chosen direction (plus his departure would free up Barnes’ role in Toronto). And Portland would definitely prefer picks to players at this point. Toronto getting an actual starting-caliber PG is their only care, but they’ll probably jump at the chance to (potentially) upgrade their roster without trading more picks.
No team that acquires Anunoby now can keep him past this season, except by signing him on the open market next off season like any team with cap room could. An extension cannot happen except by the Raptors now, and if they do that they cannot trade him for 6 months. And since the Knicks will be over the cap next year I presume, they cannot sign him on the open market either.
His bird rights would be traded with him, so no. Granted, he might make more money on the open market, but trading him doesn’t change his bird rights. That’s not how that works.
I think whichever team puts up 2 1sts, a large enough expiring deal(s) and 1 young intriguing player (preferrably non guard) takes the Jrue sweepstakes.
The “hold the powder” for Giannis nonsense just went up in smoke.
Every team that would want Jrue can offer a 1st.
Sixers, Celtics, and Nets all have 2 FRPs, but no pot sweetener. Clippers have 1 FRP.
Heat have 2 FRPs, Jovic and Jaquez.
Raptors have 2 FRPs and Dick.
Magic have 2 FRPs and depending on the GM Isaac could be intriguing, or Suggs.
Jrue doesn’t really make sense fit, picks, or salary wise for the Knicks, Cavs, Hawks, Nuggets, Kings, Suns, Griz, Pelicans, Lakers, Wolves, GSW, Mavs, Pacers, etc…
There are several teams on that last list he would make lots of sense for.
“I think whichever team puts up 2 1sts, a large enough expiring deal(s) and 1 young intriguing player (preferrably non guard) takes the Jrue sweepstakes.”
Chris Paul, Jonathan Kuminga, two first round picks for Holiday. Perfect !!
… CP3 will be flip again for Harden and a clipps 1st
I’d rather keep Paul than bring in Harden.
If they did that trade for Jrue, they should toss in Moody and take back a guy making like 1.whatever and it would help on the tax bill a bit.
Sixers really kinda screwed themselves. Imagine if they traded Simmons, Harris, and Tysse for Haliburton, Buddy, Barnes, and 2 FRPs. They’d have all of their FRPs + 2 additional ones. As much as I liked getting Harden, they gave up 2 FRPs.
