Though it was widely reported he would retire at the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, Andre Iguodala remains noncommittal on his retirement. On a recent episode of J.J. Redick‘s Old Man and the Three podcast (Spotify link), Iguodala continued to be 50/50 on whether he would play in the NBA this season.
“We recorded my decision, but I might come back and hoop … or I might go home,” Iguodala said.
Iguodala, 39, is a four-time NBA champion with the Warriors and won the 2015 Finals MVP award. Through his 19 seasons in the league, Iguodala holds career averages of 11.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.
His most productive on-court seasons came with the Sixers and Nuggets, but he quickly became a staple on Golden State’s championship teams after arriving in ’13/14. Iguodala spent six consecutive seasons with the Warriors from 2013-19 before being traded to the Grizzlies and then the Heat. After playing in 84 games with the Heat, Iguodala signed back with the Warriors ahead of ’21/22 and has played 39 games with the team in the past two years.
For what it’s worth, as of August, it sounded like general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. didn’t expect Iguodala to return to Golden State this season, although he wasn’t ruling out the possibility.
“We’re not going to close the door on anything,” Dunleavy said in August. “But my guess, and my belief, is that he won’t be back.”
We have more from the Pacific Division:
- While Iguodala was a massive part of Golden State’s championship teams, he doesn’t think he deserves to be enshrined in Springfield, he admitted on the Old Man and the Three podcast (Spotify link). “I’m not a ‘ring culture’ guy, but I’ve benefited from that,” Iguodala said. “I know I have a lot of flaws. And I think there should be tiers of the Hall of Fame. … I’m not a Hall of Famer, if you ask me. No, no, no. Those guys [Hall of Famers] had no flaws.“
- While four of the five starting positions for the Clippers appear to be filled, there still remains a hole at the starting power forward spot, opines Law Murray of The Athletic. Murray explores the team’s depth chart and goes through multiple possible options for the starting position, including Marcus Morris, Nicolas Batum, Robert Covington, and outside options like Kobe Brown and Kenyon Martin Jr. Murray expects the team to eventually make an outside addition via trade at some point during the season.
- The Suns are one of 10 NBA teams who have yet to win an NBA championship. However, Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic believes this season provides one of the franchise’s best opportunities to change that. Rankin lists five reasons why the Suns can win the NBA Finals this year, including their newly developed big three, their defensive-minded coach and their chemistry.
Since the standards aren’t very high for the basketball hall of fame, I’d vote for Iggy. He has a Finals MVP, All-Star game or 2 and for the better part of a decade was a top 5 perimeter defender in the league every year.
Facts
Should Tony Allen be in the HOF? According to Kobe, he The best perimeter defender in the league every year
Does Tony Allen also have a Finals MVP, 4 championship rings and an all star berth or 2?
No but hes got 6 All Defensive Teams. How many Iggy got?
I think 2, but All-Defense is a pretty crap measurement when you look at some of the votes. This year didn’t have anything as egregious as year’s past (Harden/Westbrook at the worst defensively receiving votes), but still some players receiving votes last year; Chris Paul, Delon Wright, Kevin Durant. Kills the meaning long term IMO.
Iggy should’ve been All-Defense many more times and so should’ve Allen even at 6x.
That’s fair, players with more popular names get chosen often
The basketball hall of fame is the weakest in pro sports. They let everyone in, it’s not really a hall of fame…
You have to remember that its the Basketball HOF not the NBA so some players with a weaker case on paper in NBA stats have a bunch of non NBA success that helps their case.
Only 178 players from all of the NBA/ABA is also pretty small. Its 100 players beyond the top 75 they rolled out, and all of them were no doubters.
Only way i see him getting in if there is a weak ballot that year. It happens in baseball some years so you never know.
Great point chapman. Never thought of it that way.
Its why coach K and a bunch of other college lifers are in.
Plus several of those 178 got in more on their college or international accomplishments than others. Bill Walton, most notably; his career in the NBA was awesome, but also only 468 games with the last two seasons being in a limited bench role. If he were in MLB, even with his awards, he’d never have gotten into Cooperstown. But his college accomplishments loom large for Springfield.
Bottom line iggy isn’t a hall of fame player.
Bill Walton is a no doubter?
In addition to all the accolades others listed he was also two time All Defense along with winning gold in the 2010 FIBA World Championships and 2012 Olympics.
Intangibles should count as well. He was smart on both ends of the court, usually made the right play and his leadership is unquestioned.
Gtfo, who cares he was on team USA? Wasn’t like he was a top 5 player on the team. If you’re going to talk about world basketball, you got to talk about Ricky Rubio before Andre Iquadala
Andre Iguodala may keep himself available if the Warriors suffer an injury to a key guy like Andrew Wiggins or Klay thompson. He could probably provide Wing depth with experience.
He, like everyone, knows that unless someone amazing shakes free the warriors will carry 14 through at least the trade deadline outside 10 day contracts. So he can pull a Bogut if he feels his body is right, and jump in late for a title run. I think he still was awesome in what little he played, and feels he doesnt want to go out like that with 3 games and a broken wrist…
Andre is a waste of a roster space. Nothing left in the tank since 2018.
I don’t think Iguodala deserves to go to the HOF, but I would still be happy for him. Cool dude.
Healthy Iggy at the end of year, yes please
Iggy is not a HOFer. He was a solid player. Great complimentary player. Not a HOF player.
