There are logical reasons why the Warriors should pursue Jrue Holiday, who was traded to the Trail Blazers in the Damian Lillard blockbuster.
As Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area writes, Holiday — a two-time All-Star and five-time All-Defense member — is one of the best two-way guards in the league. He’s also five years younger (33) than Chris Paul (38), who would almost certainly be included in a potential deal for salary-matching purposes.
However, according to Poole, the possibility of trading Paul so soon after acquiring him creates a dilemma for Golden State. The team has spent the past few months talking up how well the future Hall-of-Famer will fit in, and how he was the “missing piece.” Flipping him before he plays a game for the Warriors would likely have future free agents questioning the organization’s integrity, Poole writes.
Poole believes Holiday would improve the roster, and is “probably a more seamless fit into the team’s culture.” But trading Paul now would still carry a level of risk.
Here’s more on the Warriors:
- Kendra Andrews of ESPN examines key storylines for the Warriors entering the 2023/24 season, including how the team will fill its final standard roster spots. After the chemistry issues of last season, Golden State is looking for a “glue guy” who will be a good locker-room presence, team sources tell Andrews.
- Rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis could be a seamless fit for Golden State’s system, according to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. The 6’9″ big man has plenty of experience, having played four highly productive college seasons at Indiana. Head coach Steve Kerr sounded impressed with the second round-pick on Monday, Johnson notes. “What I like about Trayce is he plays the way we like to play — good passer, dribble handoff guy at the top of the key, good screener, gives us a lob threat that we don’t otherwise have, which is a really nice addition,” Kerr said. “And I think he’s just the kind of guy who feels the game well. He’s got a good feel for passing, cutting movement. And a lot of the stuff that we already run he runs really well. So Trayce is a really intriguing prospect and will be fun to watch him play.”
- In a lengthy interview with Mark Medina of Sportskeeda, center Kevon Looney talked about his rebounding prowess, his desire to keep his consecutive games streak alive (he hasn’t missed a game the past two seasons), how long he hopes to play, adjusting to new teammates, and more.
- The Warriors are close to hosting the 2025 All-Star game, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). The news isn’t official yet, but it’s heading in that direction. As Charania notes, 2024 All-Star weekend will be held in Indianapolis.
I have two questions.
How did Trayce Jackson Davis not get picked earlier? Seems like a great player, ready to go, four-year college guy and perfect for the Warriors needs. Sounds like a first round pick to me.
Second question is why would Dario Saric take a one-year minimum deal with the Warriors? I think he’s still a very good player and could have secured a 5 million deal somewhere else? I understand he was in great demand this summer. Why would he take the minimum and why with the warriors?
Question 2: Dario could have a great season with the dubs and get a much bigger contract because of it, especially if he plays a key role in a deep playoff run.
Question 1: Four year college players rarely go high anymore. Gms love young players with “potential”
Playing 4 years is a huge detriment to college players nowadays. I don’t agree with it, but that’s the frame its viewed thru league wide
With TJD most teams look to take second round picks as 2 way players, and since GSW was promising a guaranteed roster spot his reps told other teams he wouldnt sign a 2 way.
Saric can earn a ton the next several years if it works well. Donte got 4/54, Otto got 2/12, and GPII got 3/27 all for guys making under 5M on the Ws. The team has the most national TV games in the league so you will get exposure if your in the rotation.
If a player is playing college for 4 years. That 4th year they better be averaging 35+ or have some dominate number. That is due to a player coming out 1 and done. When they reach that senior year age they are up for their contract. The good ones get max.
Nice kid. Don’t believe the hype coming from Warriors media. He was a McDonald’s All-American who was in school 4 years, and not because he didn’t want to get to the league. NBA wasn’t interested.
Golden State wanted a four-year guy, because he would probably have to take some Regular Season minutes because their cap situation is a mess.
He is in Golden State because his agent is new GM Mike Dunleavy’s brother. When he fell out of the first round he called teams and told them don’t draft him because they wanted him to fall to Golden State.
He does have bloodlines. I have said here many times long time Indiana Pacer Dale Davis (not in his life) is his dad. Mom is Karla Knafel who is facing for being Michael Jordan’s side chick for a time early in his career. She sued him 10 years after the affair, and settled for $250k.
Saric tore his ACL in 2021. He sat out 21-22. He saw limited action in 22-23. So, his value was not really that high. Injuries like that take time to comeback from. Just like the Warriors signed Donte Divincenzo to a minimum deal last season. He wasn’t fulling back the previous season.
I seriously doubt that the Blazers would have any interest in Chris Paul. They want to let their young guards play. I think the Blazers can find a better deal than that somewhere else
It’s not going to be easy to find a deal for Holiday because you have to match salary. Portland is going to have to take back someone they don’t want regardless
They would just turn Paul around to another team for more assets. This is what OKC did a couple years ago where you take back a salary matching vet and then flip them again.
Chris Paul has never been the missing piece.
Warriors should definitely go for Holiday. Who cares about CP feelings?
Rory Maher used the word integrity in this article.
I was under the impression that Paul couldn’t be traded until December 15th? If that’s so, have to imagine the blazers would get better offers near the deadline when a ton more players are available to be traded.
Thats for players that signed new deals Paul was just traded so I think it was 2 months or something
A traded player can be traded again immediately as long as his salary isn’t aggregated with another player’s salary as part of the second deal. (The two-month waiting period applies if his salary is being aggregated.)
For instance, Paul was traded from Phoenix to Washington to Golden State in separate deals in the span of a couple weeks. He could be traded again anytime.
Paul and Kuminga for Holiday and Knox or no Knox
Then Simons and Ayton to Houston for Smith jr and Porter jr. PG. Henderson SG. Sharpe SF. Kuminga PF. Smith jr C. ? Wiseman. Waive Porter jr, then sign veterans at the end of the bench like Ish Smith and others
I’d trade CP and Moody for Holiday (both players that the Blazers could trade, or keep Moody as guard/wing insurance). NOT Kuminga. No picks though.
Either Kuminga or picks or no trade
Well… the Warriors have the blueprint for what I believe will be the trade… 2 FRP, large expiring contract, young intriguing player.
As Gary said before…
CP3, Kuminga, and 2 FRPs…
Kuminga is contract extensionable and CP3 is just a salary dump while Brogdon can be flipped (LAC/76ers) for a pick
Miami needs to think about dangling Tyler Herro in front of Golden State. The Warriors appear to love former high school stars from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Brandon Podziemski, Kevon Looney, Jordan Poole and Pat Baldwin Jr. were all Milwaukee high schoolers. They literally took every guy Milwaukee has produced lately except Herro.
