The size of the traded player exception the Sixers create in their James Harden deal with the Clippers will depend on whether or not they’re comfortable being hard-capped at the first tax apron ($172.3MM), notes ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Twitter link).
Philadelphia could complete the trade using either the more lenient salary-matching rules for teams below both tax aprons or using the more restrictive matching rules for apron teams, which prohibit clubs from taking back more than 110% of their outgoing salary (plus $250K).
Going the latter route would result in a smaller trade exception ($6.8MM), but would avoid creating a hard cap; the former route would mean a bigger TPE ($11MM) but would leave Philadelphia just $2.8MM below a hard cap. I’d expect the 76ers – who want to make another trade or two before February’s deadline – to settle for the smaller TPE to avoid limiting their cap flexibility, but that’s just my speculation.
Here’s more on the Harden blockbuster:
- Which players might the Sixers target in pre-deadline trades using the draft assets they’re acquiring for Harden? According to Chris Mannix of SI.com (Twitter link), the “early chatter” on names to watch includes Bulls guard Zach LaVine and Raptors forward OG Anunoby. Based on Mannix’s wording, it sounds like that may just be speculation from rival executives rather than anything concrete from Sixers sources.
- Zach Harper of The Athletic gives the Clippers a B-minus grade and the Sixers a C-minus grade for the trade, expressing surprise that Philadelphia didn’t get Terance Mann or Norman Powell as part of the return for Harden. In a separate Athletic story, Harper shares five reasons why he doesn’t love the deal for either side, including the fact that Russell Westbrook has played well since being traded to the Clippers and will now have his role adjusted.
- While Harden and Westbrook will once again have to figure out how to coexist in a backcourt after stints together in Oklahoma City and Houston, there’s no conflict between the two guards, who have long “maintained a line of communication,” a league source tells Law Murray of The Athletic.
- Filip Petrusev isn’t expected to be a contributor for the Clippers, a team source tells Murray. If Los Angeles were to waive the rookie big man, the team would open up a second spot on its 15-man roster and would only be on the hook for his partial guarantee ($559,782) rather than his full $1,119,563 salary, assuming that guarantee isn’t being increased as part of the trade.
- In his story on the trade, Andrew Greif of The Los Angeles Times writes that the Clippers weren’t in “Harden-or-bust” mode. In fact, some people with the team believe L.A. came “extremely close” to winning the bidding for Jrue Holiday a few weeks ago, Greif writes. If the Clippers had landed Holiday, it’s unclear how the Harden saga would’ve been resolved.
?? What does sixers have to trade for those all stars? Nobody is taking bench players for them or late round draft picks.
The unprotected 2028 Clippers pick is almost certainly going to be a high one. The Clippers don’t have many young players or picks anymore, so if their current setup goes belly-up, they’re going to suck for a long time. And they only have a year or two left before that starts happening. The Sixers also have two of their own picks available (2024 and 2030). And swaps are always available regardless of the Stepien Rule. They could go full Suns and send out every available swap. Three firsts, one protected first, and four swaps is a lot of draft capital. A team that is headed straight for a rebuild like the Raptors might be willing to deal Anunoby and Siakam for a good portion of that.
I don’t see that happening especially Siakam and Anunoby in the same deal. Always remember they would need to trade matching cap too.
I meant “or”, not “and” in that last sentence. Stupid autocorrect. Didn’t notice that until now.
Anyway, salary matching isn’t much of an obstacle. Anunoby is easy. Batum + Melton is a match for him. Siakam would require both Batum and Morris plus Melton and a minimum (Jaden Springer, probably), but it would be worth it from the Sixers perspective. The only question is how much draft capital it takes, and in what configuration.
Clippers haven’t had a losing season since 2010, it’s certainly possible but not a given that the 28th draft pick will be a high one
That’s fair, but I don’t really agree. Unless they can swing sign-and-trades to bring back young players for Kawahi, PG, or Harden, they’re kind of in the same situation as the 21-22 Clippers, who were barely a .500 team and went 24-27 without PG (and Kawahi was out the whole season), except worse, because the roleplayers were in full win-now mode and they won’t have 31 games of PG to fall back on. Maybe the Clips go all-in to get some free agents, but unless it’s just bag-seekers, FAs are more likely to sign with teams that have tradeable assets. The Clippers don’t control any of their own picks until 2029 after the Harden deal. Continuing to add players to a subpar foundation ends in teams like the early 2000s Magic or the mid-2010s Pistons, at best. Teams that never made it out of the first round of the playoffs.
Cupboard is very bare and they seem intent on riding their stars to the very end. It would be tough for any team to stay afloat under those circumstances, especially with the FA market getting thinner and thinner every year.
I agree it looks bleak on paper but I wouldn’t underestimate an owner like SB whoes willing to spend with a grand new arena under the sunny la skies
Not to mention they won’t be actively trying to lose , just that tid bit prolly keeps yhe picks outttq the top 5 where they really hold extreme value
Sixers make out like bandits here. The Clippers just put themselves in Nets big three mode.
Still an unanswered question: what is OKC getting out of this?
Revenge
Just better positioning on their draft assets. They get the Clippers 2027 swap in exchange for the worst of their 2026 picks. It basically cost them nothing, but they now get the ability to bet all-in on the Clippers falling apart after their current team reaches the end of its shelf life. Likely in a year or two at most. The Clips really have gone all-in to make a winner this year.
the Elmer Fudd types on here are really mad about this trade lol it’s hilarious reading these comments and seeing y’all try to process this
Please process it for us, your majesty.
Sankara just going to post “If you can ball with a Looney Tunes villain which one would it be Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Marvin the Martian…”
I can’t find the info, but if OG opts out, what is his cap hold?
Around 28-29M like Buddy Hield?
So if they traded for OG, they’d have around 30M in cap space with 4 guys on the roster. 34M of the don’t exercise Springer.
Not enough to get Siakam if he wants a max deal.
So I think it puts them back in the retain their own guys camp like Melton, Obure, Harris + OG.
If they dealt for LaVine it would be the same deal. Reup own guys. So which roster is better?
LaVine lineup gives you 2 skilled guards, both above average to elite % from 3 levels, and both can put up 25ppg.
If you go the OG route you’re really relying on upside, can he be that piece that puts them over the top? Like does he have a Wiggins effect that the Warriors got?
Idk, but I’d probably go for the more skilled guy in LaVine. If he was a FA hed be ranked ahead of OG.
What nobody is talking about. Including those who get paid to know. Is the failure of Russ and Harden. They didn’t mesh at all. Cause Russ pushed the ball. And was ball dominant at times. Harden pushed out CP3 for Russ. Cause he wanted all the glory. Then dumped on Russ cause it wasn’t working. Had him moved moved. Then ran out on Rockets to go to Nets.
So why would Russ even want to play with him. Things could implode in LA quicker than we think.
The Russ/Harden issues were more about off the court not on it. The Dantoni micro ball was horribly exposed by the Lakers in the playoffs. Neither wanted Silas as a coach, and weren’t happy about the Wood signing.
Then Russ got a whiff of Harden wanted out and forced his move before he had a chance. Blaming his commitment. Late to tape meetings, practice etc. it wasn’t about their fit on court. Russ called it “casual culture”. Put it simply, Harden is a bad leader and between him and Morey left Houston up brown creek.
Commitment to a team. Is about playing on the court. If you have no respect for your MVP teammate. Then you can’t play together. They were never a good mix. It’s why it imploded …… Harden didn’t respect him …….. So why would Russ want to play with him…
Like I said, on the court they were very good, I didn’t see much fit issues with them at all. They were strong odds before the 2nd round mauling to the eventually champions Lakers.
They had faith in each other, Harden wouldn’t have mortgaged Houston’s future to get him if he didn’t. Just not for the coach, FO or the system. I remember a Russ interviews post trade, he never bad mouthed Harden on the court or him as a guy, just the culture he carried off it. Plus if we’re being honest Russ has no say. RN harden is still a much better player, if Russ kicks a fuss he’ll be shipped. It’s all on PG&Kawahi. If they’re happy, Russ has to sit and accept.
The Nets will get the Sixers’ 2022 first-round pick unprotected with a right to defer until 2023 and a 2027 first-round pick protected 1-to-8, sources tell ESPN. The 2027 pick would roll over to 2028 protected 1-to-8 again. The pick turns into two seconds and $2M in 2029.
Nets get – Ben, Drummond, Curry, plus picks
Sixers get Harden, Millsap
Simmons averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists over four seasons with Philadelphia…..
That The Real of it ……
Sixers don’t have enough for OG, Memphis reportedly offered multiple first which they declined last year.
We definitely don’t want Zach LaVine and his lack of defence.
I think it’s obvious that the target will be Pascal Siakim.
Raptors have Scottie and refuse to trade OG, that fills the forward spots and allows them to promote a shooter like Gary Trent or Gradey into the starting line up. Pascal is on an expiring deal, and wants to get a big deal. Raptors struggled last year and I think will struggle again meaning they won’t want to give him the max for being average..
Whereas we can offer picks, expiring deals and young players if they want that. We have their former head coach in Nick Nurse. They keep talking about a ‘Jrue Holiday’ like target. Well Pascal is basically the forward equivalent. Solid at both ends of the floor but more of a 2nd or 3rd best player not the star or leader. Has championship winning experience. Just makes perfect sense.
Tobias Harris, Kenyon Martin Jr and/or Haden Springer, an unprotected first, a protected first, and 2 second round picks.
Raptors can keep Tobias and let him expire and clear money or try trade him for another first. Either way they get 2 firsts and 2 seconds aswell as a young player or two
Sixers line up
Melton Maxey RoCo Siakim Embiid
Beverly Oubre Batum Morris Reed
