Malcolm Brogdon preferred a fresh start after the Celtics nearly dealt him to the Clippers this summer, The Athletic’s quartet of Shams Charania, Jared Weiss, Jared King and Jason Quick report. However, he did not want to be camp holdout, according to Weiss.
A three-way deal involving Kristaps Porzingis fell through due to concerns regarding Brogdon’s injured elbow. Porzingis, of course, was eventually acquired by Boston in a restructured deal with Marcus Smart serving as the primary outgoing piece.
Brogdown was dealt to the Trail Blazers on Sunday along with Robert Williams and two first-rounders for Jrue Holiday.
Boston didn’t want to part with Williams, but he needed to be included to convince Portland to make the trade, per The Athletic’s report.
We have more on the big deal:
- Brogdon believed after meeting with the team’s brass earlier this year that he was part of the franchise’s long-term plans, according to Weiss. He was blindsided when he learned the team attempted to include him in a Porzingis blockbuster. Brogdon was also frustrated by rumors he would undergo elbow surgery. He planned to rehab the elbow, as the other areas of concern in his lower body felt relatively fine.
- Brogdon was also upset when coach Joe Mazzulla told reporters that Derrick White would be the starting point guard during a press conference announcing Jaylen Brown’s contract extension in July, Weiss adds. Brogdon only communicated with top executive Brad Stevens during the offseason and the veteran guard eventually decided he was willing to rejoin the team but still preferred to be dealt.
- The Trail Blazers were initially seeking a haul for Holiday that included four or five future first-round picks, but that demand eventually softened, according to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe. Holiday can opt out of his contract after the season, but Himmelsbach hears that both sides view his arrival as the start of a long-term partnership.
- The Warriors were never a part of trade discussions involving Holiday, Anthony Slater of The Athletic tweets. They are comfortable with their guard rotation entering camp. Golden State’s 2024 first-rounder, which was included in the deal, has now been traded three times. Memphis originally traded for the pick, then dealt it to Boston. It’s now the property of the Trail Blazers.
They did Brogdon wrong in Boston. Former 6MOY. I don’t blame him for wanting to leave.
How is that? They paid him and he decided to huff and puff about the nba business model. Not boston fault that other teams would like his services. Nice part is brogdon was willing to report and play but also wanted to be traded. He got his wish!
Good chance he gets traded again. Maybe the jazz clippers or sixers or even bulls if they dump lonzo and a pick.
Also see the rockets dumping Porter jr and some picks.
No doubt that portland will make off like a bandit!
I doubt the Sixers get involved with Brogdon on a 2 year deal.
Sixers should go after Brogdon. He should be motivated to play for them.
No thanks
It was the way the handled his injury. Celtics have a history of screwing players when it comes to injuries. Just ask IT
Are you saying you would not have traded IT for Kyrie?
Well that’s a different discussion. It wasn’t them trading him, it was they made the Medical staff lie to IT saying that him playing wouldn’t make his injury worse during that playoff run.
But to answer you question, no I wouldn’t. Mainly because of the draft pick which would have landed them Sexton or SGA I thought was too much. Not to mention Kyrie was injured as well. In fact, IT was ready to play during that playoff run and would have been exactly what they needed to win that game 7 against CLE.
Did him wrong how? You don’t get to be 6MOY by starting. Per this very post, he wanted to start and wanted to be traded.
Is there a team that values Brogdon as a FRP? I think 2 SRPs is the ultimate package + expiring contract(s) or a FRP and a bad contract.
Bulls dump Lonzo Ball and deal Portland back their FRP. I don’t see the point of holding out hope for Ball to return, wasting 10M of salary after the injury designation.
Salary is also close enough for the Rockets to dump KPJ. Might be the best player they can get without giving up a FRP.
Clippers – Morris + a salary and a couple SRPs.
Heat, if they think Lowry is just cooked.
Raptors maybe for Porter, Thad, and Flynn + picks.
You don’t think Houston would need to deal at least 1 FRP with KPJ for Brogdon? Portland is going to trade a value trade piece in Brogdon for a guy that will release and take on the Portland protesters backlash just to get a SRP or two? I think the going rate to take a guy who just beat the heck out of his lady and give you back a good player is at least 1 unprotected FRP.
Two Seconds have little value, not for 6th man
Well I don’t know if Houston will even make a call on Brogdon. But similarly to the Ball situation I think a FRP, like I said bad contract + a FRP. But we havent heard much about KPJ getting moved since the story broke so idk, same with Ball, Bulls seem unmotivated to move his contract.
So I think the ultimately the latter teams – Clippers, Heat, Raptors could add him for the 2 SRP and expiring deals.
Yes, but it will be a late FRP. Bulls are definitely a team that should get Brogdon. But I’m not giving them that Portland pick back. At best, next year’s Bulls FRP. Brogdon comes with risk. Remember, Clippers didn’t want him because of his health.
In the end Blazers did well. Better than what Heat offered, reportedly.
Grant is a good piece with Ayton and Scoot. He’s the vet that can take over. Blazers need a more aggressive scorer Grant. They can even move him at TD. Get a good return and go full rebuild. Strong draft next yr.
Bucks and Celtics are teams to beat.
LOL – focus on the losers in the garden.
Warriors were stupid to not get involved. They should have been the team with best offer easily. And I like the Celtics.
For Jrue I don’t think it would have been worth it for GS. They’re not light on players who can Halle the ball they have Steph, Klay, Wiggins and Dray who can all handle the ball. It wouldn’t be a significant improvement on CP3 off bench and I think Jrue is too good to be a bench player.
I would have expected them to get involved in trying to get Williams as a 3rd team though, he’s the perfect defensive unselfish 5 for them, clear improvement on Looney. But, then again Kerr hates big men. Kuminga or moody and filler Portland would have easily done it. And probably still would.
So, the Blazers turned Dame into a young star in Ayton, Holiday and picks. They then turned Holiday into Williams, picks, and Brogdon, who they will likely deal again for more assets. Not a bad offseason all and all.
Greg,Ayton is a under motivated huge question mark as is the fragile williams, not to mention Malcolm’s questionable elbow. Did well is in limbo at this point. Boston on the flip side ? Wow.
Listing why people aren’t perfect doesn’t change the fact that instead of taking garbage from Miami they ended up with more than they had when they started. Lillard wasn’t taking them anywhere at all.
Let’s get a Brogdon for Barrett deal going. Brogo could start at the two, move Grimes to the three, and still have Quickley, Donte and McBride off the backcourt bench. Hey
Excuse me but the Knicks are a very thrifty club. They don’t overpay for players because they have such an amazing coach they don’t need great players.
I love Brogdon’s game. But not his injury history or his ever rising maintenance level. Except for those, I’d consider keeping him as a veteran leader for their young group of guards. until the deadline. As it is, I think POR needs to jettison him prior to the deadline.
Thinking isn’t usually so dangerous. Be careful!
Below a certain level, the consequences either way tend to be de minimis, and its expression entertaining. So, there’s little need for you to worry. Go for it!
“The Trail Blazers were initially seeking a haul for Holiday that included four or five future first-round picks, but that demand eventually softened”
Haha, literally exactly what I said was going to happen, happened, yet I’m “always wrong” ahahahahaha, Damn being a genius can hard sometimes, ahahahaha
Who doubted that Portland would have a high asking price before accepting the best offer they could find?
Taking a bow for that prediction is incredibly weak BTW. Aim higher.
On the last section someone literally said that. But it’s cool how y’all quickly forget
Say genius …. the whole world knew Jrue was getting moved.
You’re upset cause Heat didn’t get Dame. Well they should have went after Jrue. Gotta give Bucks n Celtics credit. They stepped up.
Haha, upset? Cause they aint taking on that burden of a contract? Gtfo, y’all just making up nonsense left and right.
Did they step up? Or was it’s straight up a personal situation? Miami offer is still better. How is anything they got better than Herro? Ahahahaha, y’all delusional
Ayton + Holiday > Herro + Lowry
Ayton = 2 Herro
Holiday = 5 Lowry
Ayton deal already in the works. They could have had Both Ayton and Herro. Portland screwed up
Portland wanted nothing to do with Herro. They did not screw up. Portland got better draft assets than Heat offered and the players they got in RWill and Ayton fit their roster better than what Heat had as Portland needed solid bigs not another guard that is on a terrible contract.
Brogdon just got to Boston. He needs to stay quiet. Celtics helped his career. He’ll probably go to a contender. They need vets to make a run.
Sixers, TWolves, Heat, all could use Brogdon. Even if he stays in Portland. They will have no trouble moving him later.
Blazers did very well in moving Dame.
I guess we now wait and see what happens with Harden. Then what will Heat do now. They lost two rotation guys.
I agree. Blazers were bereft of draft choices. Had only one real asset. That asset was max contracted into his late 30s. As much fun as Dame has been to watch as a decades long season ticket holder, we were going nowhere with him. So we added picks and players and we start afresh. If you were to poll STH here, they’d be ok with this trade. Cronin did a good job. We now have a young core. We’ll see if they can get more wins without Dame this year than with him the last two years (27 & 32 wins). We were never competing for a title with Dame. And this coming year, Lakers, Suns, Nuggets etc. all had better rosters. We’re younger and cap flexible.
Both are valuable players but I will not miss all the whining and drama from Brogdon or Marcus. Looking forward to a Celtics basketball team that is actually focused on basketball.
Portland will have a better record this year plus all their newly acquired assets. I think they had a good offseason
Brogdan to Pistons and a pick for Bogdanovic…
Obviously no one, or very few, players in the NBA should feel secure. After the Celtics traded Marcus Smart, their “heart & soul,” and now irreplaceable TimeLord with his unique defensive skills, buckle up everyone!
