Teams around the NBA are paying close attention to how James Harden‘s stalemate with the Sixers gets resolved, since failing to extract a fair return for the former MVP could adversely affect the franchise’s relationship with its other former MVP, Joel Embiid. As Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer details (subscription required), the division-rival Knicks are one team keeping an eye on the situation in Philadelphia.
Sources tell Pompey that acquiring Embiid would be the top priority for Knicks president Leon Rose if the star center becomes available and that New York would be willing to offer three of Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, and Evan Fournier, along with two or three first-round picks.
Pompey himself acknowledges that the Sixers would likely get stronger offers than that for Embiid and wouldn’t want to trade him to another Atlantic team anyway. It’s a moot point for now, since there’s no indication Embiid will be available for trade anytime soon.
Still, Pompey stresses that the way the 76ers settle the Harden standoff could have a ripple effect on their superstar center, and the Knicks aren’t the only team monitoring the situation to see what happens. Meanwhile, sources tell Stefan Bondy of The New York Post that Embiid is one of at least three potential star trade targets the Knicks are surveilling, along with Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell and Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns.
Here’s more on the Sixers:
- As of Monday afternoon, it remained unclear “when and if” Harden plans to return to Philadelphia, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said on NBA Today (Twitter video link). “The organization has taken him at his word that he’s away on a personal matter, that there is something he has to attend to,” Wojnarowski said. “But how long will they do that is certainly a question.”
- Wojnarowski suggests that if Harden still hasn’t reported back to the team by its regular season opener on Thursday, it’s possible the 76ers will seek ” more clarity and a timetable” for his return. They’d would be within their rights to fine him $390K for each missed game if they’re not satisfied with his answer, Woj adds.
- Sixers head coach Nick Nurse said on Monday that he has been in touch with Harden during his absence, Pompey writes for The Philadelphia Inquirer. “I did reach out to him the other day … just to text like I would with anybody,” Nurse said. “See how he’s doing. See if he’s all right. He did text me back.” Nurse added that he didn’t get into the specifics of Harden’s potential return during his text exchange with the guard, since he “was just making sure he’s OK.”
- Some people around the league who spoke to Steve Bulpett of Heavy.com don’t envy the spot the Sixers and Daryl Morey are in with Harden. One front office source speculated that Morey is “not going to survive this.” Another source who has been in contact with the Clippers and other teams told Bulpett, “Daryl’s trying to steal people in trades, and nobody’s going for it. First thing, Harden’s not the same guy he was three or four years ago, so his market’s not that great. And Morey’s trying to get so much, but he’s not going to get it.”
- Javonte Smart, who had his Exhibit 10 contract converted to a two-way deal over the weekend, spoke to reporters on Monday about getting a regular season opportunity with the team (Twitter video link via Pompey). Smart indicated that if the Sixers want him to play primarily with the Delaware Blue Coats in the G League, he’ll view that as a chance to get regular playing time and to “get better.”
KAT or Embiid who will the NEW YORK KNICKS pick
Tough situation for the sixers ! There factually is no trade with the clippers that makes a lick of sense for the sixers ! Making a trade with clippers would definitely just be sixers doing harden and clippers a favor and useless gravel back an hoping karma repays them for the best !
Bottom line they are screwed either Joel will not be a sixer by the spring of 2025
Idk about screwed… +60M in cap space this coming offseason. They can certainly retool.
The best two free agents might be James harden and Tobias Harris ! Usually all cap space for now is taking on salaries to get draft capital ! Stars don’t reach free agency anymore ! They know they can get extended for the bird right max and still get traded !
Well see who makes it to FA.
You only “retool” if you’re screwed.
Spot on Noel and icon
I’m a die hard Knicks fan and if I was Darell Morey I would hang up on the Knicks with that lame offer we would have to include either Grimes or IQ because Randle ain’t getting no better and RJ will never be more then a bully ball player and if Mitchell Robinson ever develops any offensive moves we might have a blizzard in Africa. Lol. That lame offer is a joke but it’s probably the scare crow Leon Rose playing poker with monopoly cards or uno cards because he is scared to pull off a block Buster Trade just like he is scared of the NY media.
What does IQ really do for you? You know he wants 20-25M per. He’s done nothing to warrant that. I know most Knick fans think Grimes is a HoFer already but, he doesnt project as a #1 or #2.
I think the Knicks are more aligned to obtain a DeRozan, Siakam, KAT, OG someone like that without having to give up their entire roster.
I mentioned IQ and Grimes because all the other players mentioned in proposed trade offer has hit their ceilings. And all those players you mentioned don’t move the needle. This is a star driving league and the Knicks only have one guy turning into a star and that’s Brunson. Embild and Brunson would be a deadly duo. And IQ and Grimes are only going get better unlike RJ,Randle and Mitch
The situation really isn’t that hard at all for the Sixers. They have Tyrese Maxey, DeAnthony Melton and Patrick Beverley, who is gonna start.
Memphis has it far harder without Steven Adams, who is the muscle inside, and their best screener.
Harden is no type of difference-maker for Philly. They are NOT a championship team with him, or without him.
Philly’s best move is to pay no attention to Harden whatsoever. If he wants to sit. Let him sit.
Embiid’s window is now because after all the injuries he only has a couple of truly prime years left.
The Grizz will trade for the Time Lord.
R.Williams is a walking medical report…
Completely Agree. After the Simmons debacle I don’t care of Harden sits all season. No one cares that he wants to go to the Clippers and is gonna try and baby his way there. There’s no way I trade everything I did to get him and the Clippers aren’t even willing to give up Mann in return. lol. I’d actually prefer a trade featuring Zubac and draft picks instead because I’m not high on Mo Bamba as a quality back up. Besides the Clippers need Harden WAY more than the Sixers to. Wait until Leonard, or George go down again- the Clippers won’t be doing squat.
I thought Reed is Embiid’s backup… good backup by the way… The 76ers should wait…I imagine a scenario where the Bulls (for example) are once again disappointing (insert RAPTORS,or some new Irving Drama etc)
Lavine+Hunter+Kennard to 76ers
Melón/Maxey/Lavine/Hunter/Embiid
PBev/Kennard/Oubre/Tucker/P.Reed
Harden/Capella/LaRavia/Bamba/76ers FRP to BULLS
Harden/Caruso/DDR/Williams/Capella
Carter/White/LaRavia/Craig/Bamba
T.Harris/Drummond/Blazers24 to HAWKS
Trae/Murray/Johnson/Harris/OO
Bufkin/Bogdanovic/Griffin/Bey/Drummond
Vucevic/G.Mathews to GRIZZLIES
Ja/Smart/Bane/JJJ/Vucevic
Rose/Konchar/Ziaire/Aldama/Clarke
If they were to even entertain that deal, I’d assume it would involve several teams, where RJ, Mitchell, and Randle are flipped elsewhere. None of those guys would fit what the Sixers want.
They’d want Cap Flex, and High End talent.
So I don’t think it’s even worth a convo. PG13 trade is the only blueprint that makes sense for the Sixers. Young prospect, all your picks and swaps.
Morey is still living in his 2k world, trying to win a trade, when he should be focused on putting a contender on the court. All these years running an NBA FO, and he still has no clue as to how to build a team, or how to negotiate a real basketball transaction. Then again, it is the NBA, where, for FO types, knowledge of the underlying sport is optional.
We are a contender with or without harden. I’m not a Morey fan but his approach in waiting is the right move. Wait till a better offer comes in or the deadline. Worst case scenario we sit him all year and battle for the 3-5 seed in the East. As long as we keep the 50+ mil to work with (before we sign maxey) next year, I’m not too worried
Contender for what?
Anyway, if PHI were a contender without Harden, then its all the more important that Morey resolve this situation in a manner that gives the team its best chance to go from contender to champion. No competent FOC would allow this situation to fester, and preclude that. What basketball man talks of “stars” and “lesser players” in the manner he does? Face it, he’s a 2k’er / fantasy basketball player, who doesn’t want to look feeble by trading a guy he’s told people is still a star for a non-star price. PHI fans and players are just going to be held hostage to his ego.
The Sixers aren’t trading Embiid to the Knicks. It simply isn’t going to happen. If it comes to the point where Embiid is traded, it won’t be to a divisional rival. The Thunder would be a more realistice destination than the Knicks
Knicks are so reluctant to trade their picks anyway. Otherwise Donovan Mitchell or KD would be a Knicks.
Chet and picks would be the thunders offer
Doubtful but I’d consider it as a Sixer, no protections.
Fournier isn’t wanted lol
Really now …….. Sixers would trade him to a rival team. Get some knowledge. Embiid isn’t going anywhere. Not until his contract is up. That’s 2026-27.
We do t need him. Rudy is cheaper and a better fit with Jalen. Quickley and Grimes are the two most teams want.
Most folks here. Didn’t even know who they were in the draft. It’s hilarious posting for a team you know nothing about.
It’s a Rebuild and it’s yr FOUR starting tmrw. Most of you here didn’t want Thibs as a coach. Then you wanted him fired after yr two. Yes Hilarious
I know most of you don’t care. And don’t know who we are. Rebuilding thru draft takes yrs. But it’s the right way and best way to do it. Grimes is the key here. He takes that next step. Then he’s staying. Quickley we can afford to move. Cause of Jalen and McBride. Mitch still has upside. When he decides to play to his strengths. He can be a force. Even for another team.
Imo Rose and especially Thibs want to see the development of this team. Then they will go after a player who fits. Like they did with Jalen. Unfortunately in NY you don’t really have the time to be patient. Cause most are like most are here. This is the year Knicks will look to add a top player. They are just waiting to see who becomes available. And if he’s the right fit here ……..
Year4 coming .…. “In Thibs we Trust”
Honestly, this seems like tampering that’s been coordinated by Harden and the Clippers and the league should be investigating it.
The rebuild started when Phil Jackson took the job in a terrible no win situation, but still didn’t deal away future draft assets. The rebuild is in year 7 or 8
Stop with the rebuild crap newsflash we went to the second round of the playoffs so the training wheels are off the rebuild bike Big AL. Time for Mr Leon Rose who is scared to death to make a Block Bustertrade while he keeps hoarding draft picks that are at his disposal just like he is scared to talk to the NY Media and NY Knicks fans he needs to get us a bona-fide super star not a stop gap trade or signing like the Rudy or Demar names you keep bringing up. I agree Grimes and IQ are only going get better but stop with the delusional BS about Mitchell Robinson who is a one trick poney who can defend but is a liability on offense and still has not one offense move in his arsenal ad one of the longest tenured Knicks. We need a superstar to tag along with our lone star in the making which is Mr Jalen Big Buckets Brunson not a old aging star like Demar Derozen who is in year 15.
Like I said hilarious …..
There is no rebuild. When everyone is not on the same page. But he did try. And after he was fired. It became a free for all. For all the executives who stayed. And thats how you get to David Fizdale ……..
A rebuild can only be accomplished by a unified FO. And without a meddling owner. That hasn’t been done in NY. Since Pat Riley was here.
