Terry Stotts won’t continue in his role as an assistant coach with the Bucks, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The former Trail Blazers head coach had been out of the league for two years before agreeing to join Adrian Griffin’s new staff in Milwaukee. The Bucks had been searching for an experienced assistant for Griffin, who is in his first year as a head coach.
The 65-year-old Stotts compiled a 402-318 record during his nine seasons as head coach in Portland. He took the Blazers to the playoffs eight times, including a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 2019. Stotts was previously a head coach in Milwaukee, as well as Atlanta, and holds a career record of 517-486.
No explanation has been given on why Stotts decided to step down less than a week before the start of the regular season or if (and how) the team plans to fill the coaching vacancy.
How many years did Stotts coach Dame? That has to at least be in the conversation on why he is stepping down.
I came here to say the same thing.
Dame, as good as he is, must have some “warts” that we as fans aren’t privy to.
Or Stotts has warts that Dame pointed out when he showed up.
Who, or what, is Dane?
*Dame
Must of really hated coaching Dame…
Let’s all jump to conclusions before we get any inkling of what’s really going on!
Felt that fall weather change and was like
“Check please!”
Maybe Griff felt like his head coach authority was being challenged with all of Stotts’ experience and familiarity with his new star player.
Yep.
Going to Orlando Magic
Uber’ed him today. Dropped him off at 1 Magic place
I was kinda wondering if there was some sort of tampering investigation and they asked him to or he voluntarily stepped away
That sounds more plausible than some sort of beef between the two. Despite not winning a title, they were quite successful together. I never heard of any bad blood.
It’s definitely not tampering
There has to be some behind the scenes stuff here . Either Lillard said something to make him step down or he personally decided to leave because of the relationship.
Orlando bound
I guess his jealous dame likes giannis more than him
Maybe they only hired him to possibly attract Dame. They have Dame so now Stotts is free to go. He helped implement some of the offensive style for them to make Dame adjustment easier.
Look, this has nothing to do with Dame and Stotts and everything to do with Griffin. This is not Griffin’s staff. Front office selected coaches including Stotts. Griffin supposedly had input but I doubt his input went as far as Giannis’s did in selecting Griffin. Griffin has clearly implemented major changes and also has no fear of overdoing it. I believe most likely the front office brought in Stotts to handle the offense I would also bet that he had a hand in getting Horst to go after Lillard. Griffin is a defensive guy. Do you think he wanted to lose Holiday’ especially to see him end up in Boston?! I also believe Horst and Stotts were on the same page about Stotts role which would have included mentoring/advising Griffin. I would say that Griffin most likely rebuffed Stotts attempts regarding any advice. I’m basing this on comments Stotts made about how they are doing things under Griffin. I think Griffin/Giannis are basically running this team. I also think Griffin has a chip on his shoulder. I think he pushed Stotts out. His outburst at Stotts before they played OKC was unprofessional and disrespectful. You can’t act like a drill sergeant. So Stotts can’t have a quick word with 2 of his stars about the offense at a time when it is pertinent to do so. Seems like Griffin simply didn’t like Stotts talking to them alone. Like with Dame their now try to turn Giannis against Griffin. Childish behavior but Griffin’s reaction seems like it could be what you might expect if he was thinking just that. I hope that I’m wrong. I hope Griffin works out. So far I don’t like some of the optics.
