Despite seeing his minutes take a dip thus far in 2023/24, Knicks reserve shooting guard Immanuel Quickley is still hoping for a hyper-efficient shooting season with New York, writes Zach Braziller of The New York Post.
Quickley played 28.9 minutes per contest in 2022/23, en route to finishing second in the league’s Sixth Man of the Year voting. This season, he’s averaging 24.1 MPG.
“I want to try to get over 40 [percent] from 3, for sure,” Quickley said. “Overall [from the field], I want to be over 50 [percent]… If you set a goal for yourself, you’re going to try to get it. So I’m going to try to get it.”
Through his first six contests this year, the 6’3″ wing is averaging a career-high 15.1 PPG on .473/.326/.864 shooting.
There’s more out of New York:
- Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau believes that three of his key reserves have starter potential, and has applauded their willingness to play off the bench for New York, Braziller adds. “The one thing we ask everybody is to sacrifice,” Thibodeau said. “You could make a case that Quick is a starter, Donte [DiVincenzo] is a starter, Josh [Hart] is a starter. They’re sacrificing that for the team.” Fewer minutes means fewer touches, and thus lower stats, and a reserve role also can reflect negatively on a player angling for his next deal. It’s a testament to the team’s buy-in that these wings are open to the gig.
- New Knicks guard DiVincenzo is adjusting splendidly to his new role on the team’s bench, opines Braziller in a separate piece. “I think that’s pretty special,” teammate Quickley said of DiVincenzo’s fit on the New York bench. “When you can have guys connect and gel right off the bat without much time together is always a sign of something that can be special.” The 6’4″ wing is averaging 7.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 1.6 APG, and 1.0 SPG in 19.4 MPG.
- The Knicks have benefited from terrific production from their second unit, writes Steve Popper of Newsday. New York has been playing starter RJ Barrett alongside Quickley, DiVincenzo, Josh Hart and Isaiah Hartenstein. That lineup has compiled a +24.0 net rating across 20 minutes together. “I feel like no matter who’s in there… we have a system as far as what we do,” Quickley said. “And whoever’s in there, we all understand how we want to play. And that’s fast, get stops and run. That’s when we are at our best.”
So do the Knicks not make a move? HoFer Grimes posting a 8.2 PER so far. Refusal to give up these marginal guys for Mitchell is hilarious. But I will say they’ve got a deep squad. White Donte and Hart were good additions.
Are we still talking about Mitchell? Mitchell and Brunson would not be a fit and would be a horrible defensive backcourt and undersized. No offense to Mitchell but giving up a boatload of picks plus Grimes and probably RJ or IQ made no sense.
And using on PER to evaluate Grimes is hilarious. He’s out there for his defense and three point shooting. Considering that he’s playing good defense and hitting 36.4% from 3, I’d say the Knicks are happy with him.
Grimes, IQ and McBride are keepers. Randle needs to go in a package for KAT. Ob1 should have stayed.
You can’t go backwards. When you are building something. RJ is till getting better. Randle like him or not. Is a two time all star. Brunson should have been an all star last yr. Knicks have as much depth as any team. That is their true strength. Mitch is playing like he wants to be the guy. Young players get better when they are coached. And accept coaching. It’s a natural progression.
It’s a team game. And Knicks are becoming a solid good team. We got time to see who we can add. We know it’s coming. Knicks didn’t accumulate all these picks to draft players.
So look at who’s expendable.
Quickley has really become a real PG. Something I was not sure he could do. He’s a worker and has my respect. Well Knicks are set at PG with Jalen (27yrs old) in his prime. Better he plays, the more he will be worth in a trade. He may last the yr. But I don’t see him here long term (sign-n-trade)?
Grimes I wanted in the draft. I see 2way potential still. Imo he needs to be more selfish. And be more aggressive on offense. Needs a better handle. Stop settling for the threes. This is why I want DeM DeR. He gives us a legit #1 scorer. He does it of the offense. He’s not a selfish player. Moving Quickly and Grimes gives him the mins at SG. A guy with size who can get his own shot. And is a closer. Something we lack. Imo he fits us like a glove. A vet they will all respect. A player the Garden will love. He can close out a HOF career. Bringing back contending basketball to NYC. It’s a can’t miss to me. Plus he won’t cost us everything. Like all the other names they keep feeding you.
DeM DeR >>>> to Knicks …..
No.
IQ can start, but Donte and Hart are not starters. Furthermore, the money they placed on Donte may have been a waste. He’s another player with hustle, but we already have one in Hart. His acquisition is taking court time away from IQ and Grimes and he’s not exactly the best shooter out there, either. I get there’s a deep 4 connection of Villanova guys, but there’s 2 too many. And the money should’ve been used for IQ and an extension – he fits the system, can shoot, backup Brunson, etc.
Lastly, the comment about the second unit from Pooper is exactly what it is – poop. They played the Hornets. Let’s see how they do against the Celts.
Quickley will never start here. What planet are you from. You still haven’t learned the most basic stuff. Brunson is here till he retires. Quickley is expendable. Learn the game.
They played the Celts and should have won. I guess you missed it. Like you missed on everything else. Read lol ….. catch-up
Reading is fundamental. The article states Thibs believes he (as well as Donte and Hart) have starter potential – inferring elsewhere. Nowhere did I state he could with the Knicks.
You tell me to learn the game, so I’ll bite and dish it back. Learn how to read.
And lastly, that grouping did not play together as a unit against the celts last time as described in the article for the point differential from yesterday’s game against the Hornets.
And I’m alluding to the game they have this evening…against the Celts.
You’re quick to insult others when in fact you’re the one that could use the lessons.
Minutes for the perimeter group are tight, and that’s with the group backing up Randle at the 4. I’m not sure its a problem, but it seems like it could be. Talking rhythm more than anything else, at least for now. Either way, it’s hard to fault the DiV signing. He’s a quality rotation player who fits, has position flexibility and was available for the MLE. Hard to pass on that when the roster isn’t a finished product.
Trades are a Jan/Feb issue, at the earliest. This group is still ascending collectively, and in the case of certain players, individually. The chemistry among the players and coaches hasn’t been this good since the 1990’s. They would be foolish not to see what the group can do. BOS will be a good test for them.
