Does Derrick White deserve All-Star consideration? Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston argues that the Celtics guard has a legitimate case, noting that the team has a +13.6 net rating when White is on the court compared to a +1.5 mark when he sits. That’s the widest on/off difference for any player on the roster.
White is also averaging 15.6 points and 5.1 assists per game while shooting 48.2% from the field and 42.7% on three-pointers. All of those numbers would be career bests for the seventh-year guard (with the exception of his rookie season, when he shot 48.5% from the floor and 61.5% on threes in just 139 total minutes).
Still, while the 19-5 Celtics certainly have a case to send multiple players to this season’s All-Star Game in Indianapolis, it’s unclear whether White will make the cut. As Forsberg observes, Jayson Tatum is a lock to be an All-Star, while teammates Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis will also warrant consideration.
Here’s more from around the Atlantic:
- Since being traded from Philadelphia to Portland at last season’s trade deadline, Matisse Thybulle has made 39.9% of his three-point attempts, well above the 32.5% mark he put up across three-and-a-half seasons with the Sixers. Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer wonders if the 76ers gave up on Thybulle too early and whether he might’ve been rejuvenated under a new head coach in Nick Nurse.
- In a separate story for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Gina Mizell previews trade season for the Sixers, identifying some potential big-name trade targets while also considering what sort of role players might fit in Philadelphia. A prototypical point guard, a more traditional center, and a “straight-up gunner” are among the pieces the club could keep an eye out for, Mizell suggests.
- With Mitchell Robinson out for a couple months and Taj Gibson now a part of the roster, Tom Thibodeau‘s rotation at center for the Knicks looks pretty clear, writes Stefan Bondy of The New York Post. Jericho Sims will start, Isaiah Hartenstein will get the majority of the minutes, and Gibson will be available for insurance purposes. That’s how it worked out on Friday and Saturday, with Hartenstein averaging 30.5 minutes, Sims averaging 17.5, and Gibson logging a total of seven minutes in garbage time.
That would be kind of ridiculous for White to be an all star. There are plenty of good players around the league that are central to their teams’ success but doesn’t mean they are all stars.
IMO Brunson deserves more All Star consideration before White.
Obviously Brunson is a lock for the ASG.
I love Robinson on the NYK but much like Judge he’s always injured. Should the Knicks trade him in a package for OG. I would consider trading Robinson, RJ, Fournier and 2 picks for OG. Giving up RJ would hurt but to get something great you have to be willing to give up something great.
I’m not sure how willing a trade partner Toronto will be after we sued them. I’m still hoping Morant implodes one more time and the Grizzlies decide to rebuild and we package up Mitch with firsts and other players for Jaren Jackson. He’s more of a power forward than center I think but he may be able to mesh well with Randle since he seems to like to shoot from the outside on offense, not clogging the lane.
RJ alone is better than OG …..
@ Chased:
I disagree. White’s on/off ranking is #1 in the entire league, not just on the C’s.
“Plenty of good players” starting in the backcourt for one of the top seeds that are “central to their teams’ success? Name some others then.
I guarantee that if the Celtics have the best record in February Mazzula will add him as a reserve to the ASG.
Right now Brunson should be top PG.
Cherry-picked stats can lead to lots of stupid arguments like Derrick White is an All Star, for example. He is 89th in the league in points per 100 possessions. Is that All Star level?
How do you argue a cherry picked stat with a cherry picked stat?
Here is y0ur Net +/- All Star Starters

Might actually see some defense
Now post the on/off net rating starters
There’s much more to winning basketball than scoring points.
That is on/off I mistitled it.
Derrick White is certainly an All-Star. He was on the All Defensive team last year and is about the best three point, catch & shoot, shooter on the Celtics. Also he’s the classic team player which normally doesn’t get awarded. If the Celtics are in front, they should have a couple extra All Stars. No doubt D White is a huge key to our Celts finally playing as a team and Celtics recent success. Go Celtics!
Nick Nurse would use Thybulle very well if he were still in Philly but I still don’t think the sixers would have extended him. They didn’t keep McDaniels who they got for him after all.
Knicks have been giving up points in bunches. Since Mitch went down. I know it’s not all him and we’ve played good offensive teams. But if you want a definition of a Rim Protector …………. there it is.
I think Knicks can get DeM and Grant, both. They should be trying to get either.
If the Sixers were smart they would have kept all their good players and acquired all the good players from other teams. So obvious!
