While one recent report indicated the Knicks haven’t been very active in trade conversions thus far this season, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype hears from sources who say New York is among a group of teams that have shown “exploratory interest” in Hawks guard Dejounte Murray.
As Scotto writes, Murray can’t be traded until January 9, which is six months after the one-time All-Star signed a four-year, $111MM+ extension over the summer. But with the Hawks off to a slow start (they’re 12-15, the No. 10 seed in the East), Scotto suggests they’d be willing to listen to offers on several players on their roster, including De’Andre Hunter and Clint Capela, who have both popped up in trade rumors in the past year.
In June 2022, before Murray was traded to Atlanta from San Antonio, multiple reporters said the Knicks were interested in his services — it’s not surprising that they’re rumored to be checking in on his availability again. Through 27 games this season, the 27-year-old is averaging 20.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 5.4 APG and 1.5 SPG in 34.3 MPG.
Here are a few more Knicks rumors from Scotto:
- New York is still interested in Raptors forward OG Anunoby, Scotto reports. When the two teams discussed Anunoby last season, RJ Barrett came up in the talks, but “nothing substantive materialized.” According to Scotto, the Knicks would likely have to give up a significant haul of assets to land Anunoby, who can become a free agent in 2024 if he declines his player option for ’24/25.
- The Knicks and Immanuel Quickley did not agree to terms on a rookie scale extension before the ’23/24 season began, and Scotto previously reported that there was a pretty significant gap in what the young guard was seeking on his next deal and what New York was willing to offer. That gap — plus the team’s belief that he would eventually like to start — has made the Knicks willing to consider trading Quickley if the right opportunity arises, according to Scotto.
- Unsurprisingly, Scotto hears the Knicks have also been attempting to trade Evan Fournier and his expiring contract, but they obviously haven’t found any takers yet — otherwise he wouldn’t still be on the roster.
Acquiring Murray would be outstanding, but not sure the Knicks assets match up well aside from the draft picks.
I would love OG on the Knicks. How about RJ, IQ, Fournier and 3 number one picks.
That’s way too much for Anunoby, he’s good but he’s not a guy you trade 3 firsts and young player with upside and Barrett for. It be more like 2 firsts, Quickley and maybe Grimes for.
and he would be the 3rd option on offense with Brunson and Randle. He maybe very good on defense but NY would still need plenty of offense. I don’t think he is worth all that even if they had extension in place.
That’s way, way, way too much for OG. You shouldn’t have to trade either of RJ or IQ if you’re offering three 1sts.
OG is a role player. He’s a high quality one, but he’s not a star. There’s no reason to trade that much for him.
Agreed. I think his value is overrated, and if it wasn’t, a deal most likely would’ve already occurred.
It would take RJ for sure to get Murray or anyone of big value.
Time to unload Mitch too he’s always injured. Best ability is availability
Mitch may just end up in a deal to match salary. He is like Timelord, just can’t count on them to be on the court.
They need a center.
Crazy suggestion
Lakers: DeJounte Murray and Clint Capela
Raptors: DAngelo Russell and Rui Hachimura
Hawks: Pascal Siakim, Jaxson Hayes and a protected first
Lakers
Murray Reaves Bron AD Capela
Vincent Christie/Reddish Prince Vanderbilt Wood
Lakers also free up a new roster spot
Murray is mates with Bron and apparently Dlo is rumoured to be on the trade block so it wouldn’t come as a shock. Capela also fills the centre void and allows AD to move back to his preferred PF spot. They would have the best defence in the league with this team.
Toronto hangs up the phone, they get nothing in this deal and give up one of the best. Hawks some how land the pick and the 2nd best guy in the deal. Lakers get best player and 3rd best in a guy that does not need ball plays center defense allowing AD to be the 4. Just a bad trade since Raptors would want a young player to build off and picks. Hawks and Raptors may work together no need for LA.
Knicks should trade RJ, IQ, Randle, Fournier and 2 picks for OG and Siakam.
Horrible trade for the Knicks. The two picks would be going the other way, and even then the Knicks hang up instantly.
Other way around. Toronto hangs up instantly. After the BS that the Knicks have been trying to pull in the media/courts, the only way the Raptors are going to deal with them is if the Knicks massively overpay.
@Againigan: You have a really good point, but based purely on players/assets, that is an absolutely horrible deal for the Knicks that makes them a worse team. Three of their best four players, plus two firsts for half a season of Siakam and a season and a half of OG would be one of the worst trades in Knicks history.
I see what your saying but disagree I think Dlo is a decent fit at PG as he can play on ball and off ball with Scottie. Plus Rui I think would be a nice fit next to Scottie if OG got traded in a separate deal. Also I think you’re overvaluing Siakim as he’s an expiring 39mil contract.
Same with Capela who’s been rumoured on the outer for ages. He’s a 10-10 centre which has to be sat during the playoffs
Maybe I was off with the picks but I feel as if the overall idea isn’t that far fetched
NYK, MEM and IND reported offered 3 protected FRPs and expiring deals for Anunoby at various points last year. His market price certainly hasn’t gone up. He’s now a rental and has been the same role player who plays 60 games a year since.
I’m not opposed to moving Barrett, and if we’re adding another scorer, we almost have to. But he’s likely worth than Anunoby on his own. He’d might be a better fit on the NYK though because he’s a better 3 pt shooter (although hardly great) and defender (even though Barrett’s pretty good and versatile, Anunoby is elite). Still, he’s UFA likely to demand close to max and might even get max because real stars don’t become UFAs any longer.
Quickley as starting PG to Wizards?
