The Pistons are expected to be active in the trade market prior to this season’s deadline and have interest in acquiring a forward, according to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, who identifies Raptors forward OG Anunoby as one of the players Detroit has its eye on.
Of course, as Edwards acknowledges, Anunoby is a trade target who will appeal to most teams across the NBA, given his three-and-D skill set and his seamless fit on virtually any roster. There’s also no guarantee that Toronto will make him available on or before February 8.
Even if Anunoby ends up on the trade block, it’s possible Detroit won’t aggressively pursue him during the season in the hopes that he could be signed in free agency next summer, Edwards adds. The 26-year-old has a player option for 2024/25 that he’s extremely likely to decline, while the Pistons are well positioned to create a significant amount of cap space in July.
Edwards identifies Sixers forward Tobias Harris as another veteran on an expiring contract who would be of interest to the Pistons, though Harris has played an important role in Philadelphia this season following James Harden‘s exit and seems unlikely to be traded unless it’s for an upgrade.
Losers of 22 consecutive games, the Pistons obviously aren’t looking to make a win-now move that will propel them to playoff contention this season. With that in mind, it may seem counterintuitive that they’d be interested in trading for players like Anunoby and Harris, who can become free agents in 2024.
However, if the Pistons were to acquire Anunoby, Harris, or someone else with a similar contract situation, the player’s Bird rights would be traded along with him, putting the Pistons in a strong position to extend or re-sign him.
Still, I’d be surprised if a lottery-bound team like Detroit is prepared to give up the sort of assets it would take to acquire an established impact player — the Pistons may be better off selling off some of their own veterans at this season’s deadline and taking the same approach next summer that Houston did this past offseason, adding vets in free agency instead of via trade.
Makes almost no sense, and doesn’t fit their timeline that great so…knowing the pistons, queue this deal up
Unless they are a third team in a trade. makes no sense to trade away assets to win 2 more games this season.
This season is the only season that matters? If they made a trade for a player like O.G. they’d be thinking about next season as well. They would have him already on the roster and would have his bird rights when it came time to resign him.
That would mean paying him a max deal. So you assume he will take a max deal to play on a team that is a few years away from a championship.
Yeah, because that might be the only Max deal he gets offered
Master 2k’er Weaver is playing to his audience of 2k’ers. In their eyes, he’s doing a great job, believing he’s “won” every trade he’s made. Those are the only wins that matter to them. The standings are certainly irrelevant. DET’s owner is obviously gullible, but this gullible?
The Pistons ought to consider sliding on down to the Triple Rock Church and listen to what Reverend Cleophaus James has to say
They need to see the Light
Why ??????
Thompson will better than OG.
Monty is overrated and overpaid. Pistons are going to find out the hard way.
He will?
You must have been the one drafting for the knicks the last 3 decades lol
Feel like it’s pretty easy to see the problems on the court in Detroit.
Cade isn’t a shooter and gives away turnovers, Jaden Ivey is poor defensively, Ausar Thompson is great defensively but can’t shoot at all. Bogi is old, Bagley is inconsistent, Wiseman needs time and to stay healthy.
Jalen Duren seeming doesn’t have any glaring issues with his game but when paired with Cade and Thompson you have no shooting on the floor.
So in terms of how you get better you need shooters, you need consistency and could probably do with some experience or leadership.
Out of those two names suggested OG will be too expensive as half the league will likely be interested. And Tobias, Sixers won’t want to give him up your better off targeting him as a FA.
Draymond Green could be a good target, returning home, providing experience and leadership. Lauri Markeneen I think could also be a good target. Pair him with Thompson and Duren as your forwards and centre. Really good defensively, nice and long, and Lauri adds some shooting touch. Utah Jazz can have Jaden Ivey and Marvin Bagley along with a first.
Keyonte George and Ivey in the backcourt with Hendricks and Kessler, they’d be building nicely
Pistons need to be eyeing a resignation letter from the league
But why? What is DET doing
They should be playing Cade and Hayes in backcourt. Ivey as the third guard. You have to stick with it for a yr at least. Monty seems like he’s feeling everyone out. This team is better than this. It’s on the coach imo.
Wish Knicks would trade for Bagley to backup Randle.
Why bother, the Pistons are 2-23.
Why would Toronto want to trade Anunoby or Siakam? These players are good and still young. Difficult to find athletic forwards who can play inside and outside.
Trade Ivey, Hayes and Livers for Jordan Hawkins, Cody Zeller and Nance for shooting next to Cunningham. Or trade Bogdanovic, Hayes and…. Wiseman to GS for Chris Paul and Jackson-Davis, then trade Bagley, Livers and Monte Morris to the 76s for Marcus Morris, Korkmaz and Bamba. Lineup would be. PG. Paul, Ivey, Sasser. SG. Cunningham, Burks, Korkmaz TW. Umude. SF. Thompson, Harris, Knox. PF. Morris, Stewart, Jackson-Davis. C. Duren, Bamba, sign Noel. Veterans at every position working with the young guys developing. Ivey develops and him and Cunningham can switch depending on the matchup next year. If you just want to let Wiseman be free then trade him to San Antonio for McDermott or Collins. Trade Bagley for Kennard. No need for OG. The owner is starting to mess up after he started good. Do not trade for OG.
Why punish OG? Maybe he would want to be the #1 guy, OG shooting numbers are pretty damn good. Raptors have more shooting though to help spacing. He wouldn’t get that with the Raptors, I’d assume Bogdan is part of the deal so they wouldn’t have another shooter.
Pistons have a TON of work to do on their roster.
Trade Bojan, Burks, MB3, Harris, Morris, Hayes should be their top priorities, literally nothing other than accumulating picks should be their priority right now.
Call up the Knicks, take Fournier, get giur FRP back, that’s the first move to make.
I would try to extend Wiseman, cheap, and actually develop him.
I can see Cade getting a max and being traded a year in honestly. Just how this is going.
