RJ Barrett has provided the scoring punch the Raptors were seeking when they decided to trade for him last week, writes Michael Grange of Sportsnet. Barrett had his best game since the deal Sunday night, posting 37 points in a lopsided win at Golden State.
“I’m just trying to help,” he said. “That’s all I’m trying to do, just trying to help. (Immanuel Quickley) and I, I think we’re adjusting great, but it’s a work in progress.”
Toronto is 3-1 with Barrett in the lineup, and he’s averaging 21.0 PPG while shooting 53.8% from the field and 52.6% from three-point range. Coach Darko Rajakovic noted that Barrett has been keeping the ball moving, handing out six assists on Sunday, and Barrett is enjoying the open shots he’s been getting in Toronto’s offense.
“Being here with the system we have, you get a lot of wide-open looks,” Barrett said. “We’re playing in a flow, in a rhythm, getting good shots that I work on every day … you know the ball is coming, you just have to be ready to shoot it.”
There’s more from the Atlantic Division:
- Nets backup center Day’Ron Sharpe will undergo an MRI today after spraining his left knee late in Sunday’s game, according to Brian Lewis of The New York Post. Sharpe had to be helped off the floor after a collision, and coach Jacque Vaughn said he won’t accompany the team on its flight to France for Thursday’s international game. “He’ll stay back, won’t travel with us to Paris right now,” Vaughn said. “We’ll see if he’s going to join us in Paris.”
- Harry Giles and Trendon Watford were thrilled to remain with the Nets as they learned over the weekend their contracts will be guaranteed for the rest of the season, Lewis adds. “I’m officially official,” said Giles, who has battled injuries throughout his NBA career. “(General manager) Sean (Marks) texted me in the morning, told me, ‘Glad you’re a Net, you’re here to say, well deserved.’… When I came in this morning, I saw Sean again. He gave me a hug, told me congrats and I’m glad you’re here to stay.”
- Marcus Morris talked to Gina Mizell of The Philadelphia Inquirer about how much it means to him to be playing for his hometown Sixers and hearing “from North Philly” as part of his pregame introduction. “If you would have asked me this, in a million years, I would have said I didn’t think it was going to happen,” said Morris, who was acquired from the Clippers earlier this season. “… My boys being able to see it. My family being able to see it. It was big for me. Just grateful for the opportunity.”
Would like to hope RJ is happy to be home and will flourish, but feel like I’ve read this same headline for Knicks the 7 or 8 times he decided to play hard, only for him to crash back to earth a couple games later. There’s a reason the Knicks let him go…
Al will be here to white knight RJ in 3…2…1…
Talent knows talent …. there are some here who just can’t see it.
I’m still waiting for an explanation of how Knicks are worse now. Cause they got fleeced ……
RJ will be an all star one day. I said that his second yr playing. Still believe it.
How he is getting his shots in TO is different than in New York. In TO they are playing with pace and that is driving most of his scoring. Whereas in New York he wasn’t get that as often and his shot diet included half court creation in a very basic offensive system. Which is basically playing to RJs weaknesses.
RJ almost always plays hard. He has very high expectations of himself and a work ethic to match them. His problem is he’s an NBA wing player who is below par in natural shooting ability and explosiveness. On the other hand he has plus strength and overall basketball skills. He’s still trying to figure it all out. All NBA status will likely elude him, but it won’t be for lack of will or effort.
Still trying to figure it out? It’s been 4 years. At a point you are who you are. I wouldn’t hold my breath, but feel free.
Yes, you are what you are; but he’s been different players over the course of his career, and he is only 23. I’m neither holding my breath, nor even believing it likely, that he’ll be a star (the contrary, as I believe I stated). My point was effort has never the issue.
Says the guy who thought OG could drastically change after 7 seasons.
How many points did RJ score last night? I’ll wait…
I watched RJ Barrett make a bunch of threes, drive to the rim and score. And he’s young. Could he become a star? I wouldn’t bet against it.
Yeah but would you bet on it? If so post your slip. I prefer to keep my money, personally.
23 yrs old ……. only haters give up on 23 yr olds who work all the time …. He’s home
23 yrs old brother. Let him mature. He’s got upside still ……
Barrett proves doubters wrong but the chirpers will chirp. He defended, scored and drew fouls. Obviously he can play more freely because he’s a go two guy. When knicks got Brunson his touches were reduced. I expect nothing less from those with bitter views to have doubts. They doubt themselves in life too.
Lol
I’m a Knicks fan, and while I thought it was time for RJ to go, it had nothing to do with his effort level. He wasn’t/isn’t a great defender, but he works hard at that end of the floor. He just wasn’t a good fit on a New York team that has a guy in Randle who is an Iso player, and a scoring point guard.
Personally, I think the deal was great for both teams. The Knicks didn’t need another 20 PPG+ scorer on their roster that wasn’t a Superstar, and RJ/EQ bring the volume scoring the Raps needed.
The deal is only good for the knickers, hmmmmm debatable if and it’s a HUGE if OG decides he likes the rotten apple. All indicators are he is walking. Aside from that I agree with Maxey.
Some guys are biased. Just like they think they are better than others. Privileged offsprings can’t have an expanded view.
“Privileged offsprings”? Lol
OG will resign, his agent is the son of the team president Leon Rose. Rose wouldn’t have made the trade if he didn’t have assurances that OG would stay.
All indicators are he is walking? Something tells me Leon Rose would a bit of insight into an NBA player whose representatives include Sam Rose his son.
I’m not a Knicks fan and I find your assertion hilariously uninformed.
Yeah you got insight ????
To what ——- OG already loves it here. And he hasn’t even peaked yet.
I’m actually surprised to see Sean Marks guarantee Harry Giles’ contract. Vaughn refuses to play him. I bet he’ll continue to warm the bench with Day’Ron Sharpe () recovering from a sprained knee.
Apparently Barrett is playing well. Can he keep it up is the question. It did not dawn on me that the nets get attention. The nets need some tweaking if they want to be taken seriously.
It’s early but signs are positive for this Raptors group…
Yes a lottery pick is positive. Nice perspective.
@Lil D
What contracts do you think OG and IQ will get? Money wise at least.
