Daniel Theis considered rejoining the Celtics after reaching a buyout agreement with Indiana in November, according to Brian Robb and Souichi Terada of MassLive. After the Clippers played Saturday at Boston, Theis said he discussed the move with some of the Celtics’ stars before deciding on L.A.
“Obviously, I had a couple of conversations (with Boston),” Theis said. “I talked to Jayson (Tatum) a little bit there with Jaylen (Brown). But like I said, the Clippers were pretty fast, gave me the right chance at the right time. So, for me, it was just all about getting back on the court. Indiana just wasn’t right for me, it wasn’t a fit. For me, it was just getting back on the court as quick as I can and just compete out there and enjoy basketball.”
Theis was looking for an immediate opportunity to play after being stuck on the Pacers’ bench, and the Clippers were able to offer that with backup center Mason Plumlee sidelined at the time with a knee injury. Robb and Terada note that Boston may be looking to add another big man before the trade deadline, and Theis would have been perfect for that role.
There’s more on the Celtics:
- Saturday’s loss displayed how shorthanded the team can be in the frontcourt without Kristaps Porzingis, who sat out the game after spraining his ankle Thursday night, Robb notes in a separate story. However, the injury is considered minor, and coach Joe Mazzulla doesn’t expect Porzingis to miss much time, tweets Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
- After Jrue Holiday expressed a desire to sign an extension in Boston, Chris Forsberg speculated Saturday on Celtics Pregame Live that the veteran guard might be open to a new deal that starts at around $35MM and declines slightly each season, relays Nick Goss of NBC Sports Boston. Forsberg notes that Al Horford accepted a similar structure (at a much lower price point), and it would provide security for Holiday while preserving some financial flexibility for the team.
- Mazzulla doesn’t have a strong opinion on whether the recent trend of players reaching the 70-point mark is beneficial for the league, per Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. “I don’t really care,” he said. “Either way I don’t really care if it’s good or not. What’s good is that our teams play defense. If you look around the league one of the things that separates us — and there’s a few other teams — is the best players play defense.”
Trade mykhailuk and a 2nd rd. Pick for roster space sign queta to a roster contract then sign biyombo to a roster deal that should solidify your front line sign diallo to a 2way contract
Example of why I’ve never believed in Boston’s chances. Team depends on KP and that’s a scary thing to sign up for for a whole postseason.
If Boston does not win the Championship and Mazzulla is eventually fired, I will have the exact same reaction. “I dont really care.”
Why this fool was given the keys to this team is still beyond me. Guy gets blown out again to a good team, again, because, once again, 3 pt shooting just to 3 point shoot is not an offense. Well its not an offense unless you have Steph Curry.
Yeah, i cannot stand the guy. If I could figure out a way that the time space continum could make hte Celtics win this season and NOT retain him, I would.
What exactly would you like him to do better? They are 2nd in defensive rating, 3rd in offensive rating and something like 4th or 5th, shooting 38% from 3.
They’re all still mad at the guy because through no fault of his own happened to be the coach they hired to replace the old coach that couldn’t keep it in his pants.
Just a few weeks ago the Celtics blew out the Clippers by a bigger margin in LA, was he still a horrible coach then?
Mazzulla came in as a rookie coach and coached the team to a game 7 of the ECF. The front office then turned around and traded Smart who has been the heart and soul of the team for years along with trading the 6th MOY. He’s had to integrate 2 new starters and they still have the best record in the NBA.
If you could figure out the space time continuum maybe you could go back prevent Jason Tatum’s ankle injury in game 7 of the ECF last season.
Mazzulla is just a puppet of Brad Stevens over-obsession with analytics. There was nothing difficult about the situation he inherited last season. The Celtics had the most talented team in the league and were coming off a second half of the previous season with an unprecedented +16 net rating. All he had to do was keep that system in place and the Celtics likely win the title. While he was probably just following orders of Stevens to instead have the team live and die by the 3, it is understandable that he’s not so popular amongst Celtics fans considering it took player revolts and Horford running the team’s late game timeout huddles with Mazzulla in the background in a timeout of his own to get better lineups and focus in their near comeback in the ECFs. While Stevens certainly seems skilled at player personnel as the team seems even more talented this season, his insistence on having a puppet coach will likely create an odd dynamic in the big playoff spots again this season. At least they have Sam Cassell to help Horford run the key late game playoff timeout huddles this time around though.
If C’s got swept by Miami Nurse could have been the HC of an unbeaten squad…
I don’t remember how Will Hardy got the Jazz HC
We have to hope Coach Mazzulla & staff keep learning. Especially after that Milwaukee debacle and last night’s stupid repeat. Perk had it right that when our threes aren’t hitting we have to change styles and drive. (The key related question is what CAUSES our threes to go ice cold. We can’t take too many more 20-0 opponent runs. Geez! Come on Joe! When a defense is making us miss our threes, we want to see you realize such, change offensive style and win a game … before all us fans believe in you! Go Celtics!
Thank you!
You got it totally straight! Mazzulla is taking all the anger, hate & frustration from the Celtics firing the quickly beloved Udoka. We all were destroyed but some just can’t get over it. It’s why Letterman recently said everything going around now is bad.
Celtics needing more help again is mind boggling.
It’s mind-boggling that they have the best record in the league and people are pooping their pants.
20 and 2 at home. Clippers are good. It’s January.
Whatever,
Cause Mazzula sucks @ coaching
So what do you think their record would be with a different coach?
41 and 5? 43 and 3?
Clearly, they would be 56 and (10) with a good coach…
Theis playing great ball
Theis is playing great. I thought he would be a perfect match for the Clippers when I heard he want there, for himself and the team. Then he goes and hits 2 of 3 threes against us! Geez! I always thought he should have shot more threes for us as I liked his form & shot. Go Theis! But stop it against us. Go Celts!
WTH? After the Clips slaughtered us and Theis got lots of shots, makes 8 of 9 and hit 2 of 3 threes, Clips turn around and lose to the Cavs and Theis playing 17 minutes get just 1 shot and scores 0 points. WTH? Something is seriously wrong with our Celts defense. Additionally, other teams can make us go ice cold from three but we can’t do the same against them? Hope we’re learning and getting better. Go Celtics!
Joe is learning some on shooting 40 3’s a game. KP is key to Half court success. Brad is not done with this roster. Cassell is a great Head Assistant. Clippers were ready and hot. But the Celtics were complacent for some reason,m.
Our new acquisition KP, along with Jaylen, comes out hot a lot, it’s great. And when we need to stop an opponent’s run KP can and should operate down low. He posts up at the end of close games and goes to the line time after time. KP is now our go-to guy & he wasn’t there. (I think Clips defense shut down our threes and we never adjusted.) Go Celtics!
