Adam Silver is finalizing a contract extension that will keep him as NBA commissioner through the rest of the decade, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. He will remain in office to pursue the league’s next two major objectives, a new media rights deal and expansion, Wojnarowski adds.
Silver, 61, spent eight years as deputy commissioner before being promoted nearly 10 years ago. He has operated in a less authoritative manner than his predecessor, David Stern, Wojnarowski observes, working to build a partnership with owners, management and players and becoming popular with all three groups.
Silver negotiated a new Collective Bargaining Agreement last March that will ensure labor harmony through at least 2029. The CBA also reworked the salary cap system by creating restrictive apron levels, giving teams in small and mid-sized markets a greater opportunity to remain competitive.
The commissioner radically transformed the NBA’s playoff system with the introduction of the play-in tournament, which provides more teams with a chance to qualify and limits the number of games in March and April with no postseason implications. The success of that innovation led to this season’s establishment of a mid-season tournament, which was a big hit with fans and players.
Silver has been tested by crisis during his time in office, Wojnarowski notes. He suspended the 2019/20 season for several months following the COVID-19 outbreak and helped to devise a system to finish the season in a bubble setting at Disney World in Orlando. The move allowed the league to crown a champion, even though it didn’t happen until October, and preserved television revenue as well as player salaries.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo weakest era ever. We needed Tatum to take over. Can we please get Stern to take over then, he could do a better job right now than narcissist Silver
The ghost of David Stern running the NBA…..
Oh great, more rule changes, records broken, more star calls, awful officiating overall. Surely Silver can add to the rigged season tournament and play in tournament. How about a FA Cup style tournament, every team involved round robin. Drawn from a hat, completely random of course. Need more awards too
If you don’t like that then you don’t like NBA basketball. I think we should do a name change to NBE National Basketball Entertainment or SBA Silvers Basketball Association which one? Then we need LeBron flopping to the ground laying on the court holding himself in pain for the logo
I already take it as entertainment these days. Try not to get emotionally involved, yet left shaking my head in utter disbelief alot. You’re allowed to play D in the euroleague and FIBA tournaments, star calls non existent. Massive free throw discrepancies dont happen. I find myself watching and enjoying those competitions more and more. Wonder why the world is catching up? Don’t be harsh on LBJ. His go to 6 step spin move is unstoppable. If that doesn’t work, just drop the shoulder and brondoze someone and demand fouls. All else fails, go down like a soccer player. He’s not the only one.
It’s horrible news for the game of basketball and any real fan of it. But, unfortunately, not unexpected. Truth is that his direction (dilute the sport to make it more consumable by people who know nothing of it) is likely the one the new PTB in the league want to head. If he wasn’t on board, they’d just find another stooge of his ilk. The latter wouldn’t be as myopic and annoying, perhaps, but the end result would likely be the same. RIP BB.
I mean I totally loved guards getting knocked on their ass every time they drove to the hoop. Let me tell ya there’s nothing like a big man pounding the air out of the ball for 22 seconds….so engaging, and the early 00s selfish, iso hero ball was amazing.
The tv ratings these days are down from 10, 20+ years ago. The game has expanded and it’s easier to watch than ever yet nothings come close to the peak of 1998. So a lot of the former fans clearly disagree with you or they’d still be watching. Numbers don’t lie.
NBE National Basketball Entertainment or SBA Silvers Basketball Association which one? It’s not the NBA anymore
Adam McMahon even gets to celebrate his extension with a lakers win, good for him. How does a team constantly hit less field goals, less from deep, far less and win? 43 free throws to 16. Wow, pop the cork Adam, enjoy.
Claiming the NBA is rigged on the basis of the Lakers beating the Warriors of all teams is next level conspiracy thinking. Congrats on moving up a level.
It’s not just against the warriors. No team has benefited more through out the history of the league from awful officiating than L.A
You kinda didn’t have any answer for how a team can make less field goals, far less from deep constantly yet win? How does that happen?
Just like the captain of a sinking boat. Hopefully Adam turns off the lights when he’s the last man out of the building.
Apparently Vince McMahon withdrew his candidacy after dismissing the owners’ demands for a continued frivolous clown show, thereby leaving Silver as the sole entrant.
VKM is kinda busy with lawsuits and whatnot.
