Echoing recent reporting from Adrian Wojnarowski, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports confirms that the Hawks are “certainly open for business” ahead of the trade deadline and says Atlanta has been one of the NBA’s most active teams in recent trade conversations.
According to Fischer, the Hawks have told multiple teams in recent discussions that the only untouchable players on their roster are guard Trae Young and forward Jalen Johnson. Notably missing from that group is guard Dejounte Murray, whom Atlanta has “made widely available,” sources tell Yahoo Sports.
While the pairing of Murray and Young in their backcourt hasn’t been as successful as the Hawks hoped, the former Spur would presumably still have significant value on the trade market, in large part due to the relatively team-friendly four-year extension he signed during the offseason. That deal, which begins in 2024/25, can be worth up to $120MM with incentives.
Pointing out that the Hawks control their own 2024 first-round pick and owe their 2025 first-rounder to San Antonio, Fischer suggests that it’s possible the team will move some veterans this year, add a 2024 lottery pick to a core headed by Young and Johnson, and look to get back to the playoffs next season.
Here’s more from Fischer:
- The Knicks made some calls to potential trade partners about veteran big men following Mitchell Robinson‘s injury, per Fischer, but after they added Precious Achiuwa in their trade with Toronto, rival executives now think the Knicks may be more focused on exploring backcourt trade targets ahead of the deadline. Fischer mentions Alec Burks of the Pistons and Malcolm Brogdon of the Trail Blazers as a couple possibilities, though it’s unclear if New York has actually expressed interest in either player.
- The Wizards have let teams know that they’re open to trading veterans for draft assets, sources tell Fischer. That list of veterans may include Kyle Kuzma, who signed a new four-year contract with the club last summer, though there’s a sense that Washington would seek multiple first-rounders for the forward, Fischer writes.
- The Celtics are expected to hang onto big man Luke Kornet through this weekend’s salary guarantee date, according to Fischer, who says that the team’s other non-guaranteed players – Svi Mykhailiuk, Dalano Banton, and Lamar Stevens – are also more likely than not to stick around through that deadline. Fischer adds that rival front offices are preparing for Boston to explore trades that improve the team’s bench.
- In case you missed it, we also rounded up a few Pascal Siakam-related rumors from Fischer in a separate story.
I still want another center. No Mitch means we need rim protection and rebounding. Especially for the playoffs. Depth is a good thing always.
I know Thibs loves Murray. And I agree he would be a nice addition. Especially since his timeline is closer to Brunson. But I just don’t see Hawks trading him to Knicks …..
It’s like I’ve been saying. DeM is a real possibility for this and next 2-3 yrs. There are not that many SG available. I’d be shocked if Knicks could pull off a Murray trade.
So where is the Hawks Homer. Looks like this team is headed nowhere….. how long was it when they beat Sixers …..
Seems like a decade ago.
Coming from the Knicks homer. When’s the last time they won a ring? Seems like decades ago.
You know what they say about people who assume ….. right. This doesn’t concern you.
Turns out Travis Schlenk was right about not trading for DJ and surrounding Trae with shooters. Could be addition by subtraction trading DJ and inserting Bogy into the starting lineup.
You had a shooter and traded him to Kings. Personally I thought Murray was a solid pickup. Cause Trae doesn’t play D. Don’t watch Hawks enough to say why it hasn’t worked. But Hawks have made questionable moves. And it continues. With Capela, Hunter trade rumors. Murray can definitely bring back value. But not what you gave up for him.
What’s the better combo for the Hawks, Siakam/Young or Siakam/DJ? While trading for Siakam would be a gamble, given his statement about not signing an extension, does it make sense to trade one of Young/DJ and sign Siakam as a free agent? Would that be the needle mover to get the Hawks over mediocrity?
You can’t trade for Siakam if you can’t sign him.
The NYK just accelerated finalizing a deal with TOR because they felt the need to clear minutes on the perimeter. It makes little sense that they would now be targeting perimeter adds who would come in warranting rotation minutes. Thus, they are not. Pretty uncomplicated. Not sure why the the media is so confused by it. A deep (non-rotation) bench piece perhaps, but even that is premature.
On the other hand, adding a big at the rotational level almost has to still be on the table. Just perhaps more on the backburner until they see what Sims and Achiuwa can do off the bench. In any event, I doubt it’s more than a rental. Long term, they love the C rotation they have.
The search for a star is always there. Murray will tempt them, but I hope they’re smart enough to stay away from him. They don’t need to reach here.
Who realistically could Knicks go after. That would be a fit and also a star piece. If you look at FA next yr. We can’t sign a major one. And there are no SG except for DeM. And Knicks can’t sign him. And Bulls would be dumb to let him walk. Mitchell is too expensive in a trade and now probably too hard to match salary. I only see DeM as a reality and Murray as a maybe …..
Sixers use your assets on Murray, Lauri, Siakam, or wait until the summer?
Murray would have to include 1 of Batum, RoCo, Melton, or Bball Paul to make the money work. Or you were getting Murray + another player for Tobias. And a 3rd team likely gets involved bc I doubt they’d want Capela, and I doubt Hawks trade Bogdan or Hunter too in this trade scenario.
Lauri you could technically do a 5 for 1, sparing your current rotational depth. Or use Tobias again, maybe for Lauri and Olynyk.
Siakam would involve Tobias.
Murray is a nice piece for Philly.
I love Murray to Philly but I’m not sure if the sixers have what the hawks would require.
If its picks they have 3 FRPs they can deal.
Kuzma coming in hot with those hollow stats.
Call up the Hornets, they can’t sign “talent”.
Pistons would be a really smart trade partner for the Knicks actually….
You’ve got a strong starting 5 but with Mitch out could do with another big, and with IQ gone need someone to step up and take on a bench scoring role. So far Grimes hasn’t done that, nor has McBride or Flynn.
However the Knicks could offer away Evan Fouriner and maybe some second round picks for some more usable pieces while still keeping flexibility open for the offseason.
Alec Burks would give them a good bench scoring option, while Wiseman would give them a capable back up big man with really high potential should he take the opportunity.
Fouriner and 2 seconds for Burks and Wiseman
Brunson Donte OG Randle Robinson
Burks Grimes Hart Precious Hartenstein
McBride Wiseman
Why wouldn’t the Celtics hold onto Luke Kornet? He’s far more steady than Al Horford at this point, and can actually PLAY the second game of a back to back. I don’t know if Kelly Olynyk is available, but I’d like to see Boston try to get him back, to shore up the front court. I’d much rather have him, than Horford, at this point.
Our Boston Celtics have all the pieces they need now to win it all. Certainly keep Luke but please stop with besmirching ‘Playoff Al.’ Al really is very important as he keeps the Celtics playing team ball with his ball movement, then makes clutch three point shots and key blocks come 4th qtr clutch time. I wouldn’t call Al indispensable but he fits perfectly & should retire in a couple years as a Celtic hopefully with a title on his resume. Kelly O was my favorite Celtic but he’s not a great offensive rebounder and we now have Neemias Queta for that duty. Go Celtics!
Didn’t Atlanta select Trae Young over Luca, sort of? Shows me NBA teams are wrong to select and build around a short guard. Now, a few years later, Atlanta can’t defend … primarily because Trae needs to play. And they won’t trade him so they are in a bad spot until they do.
