After Charlotte was able to secure a first-round pick from Miami in this week’s deal for Terry Rozier, teams with quality guards available are expected to use that return as a benchmark, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, who suggests that the Wizards, Trail Blazers, and Raptors want “at least a first-round pick” for Tyus Jones, Malcolm Brogdon, and Bruce Brown, respectively.
It will presumably be more difficult to extract a first-round pick for a player headed for free agency in 2024 and 2025 than it was for Rozier, who has two more years left on his contract beyond this one. Still, as Fischer notes, there will be no shortage of teams in the market for backcourt help at this season’s deadline.
Sources tell Yahoo Sports that the Lakers are “chief among backcourt buyers” as they seek a point guard upgrade on D’Angelo Russell. The Knicks, Bucks, and Sixers are among the other potential buyers at that position, while the Nets have “poked around” the market too, per Fischer.
Fischer names the Cavaliers and Timberwolves as two other clubs expected to peruse the market in search of backcourt depth and notes that the Spurs will always be a team to watch for point guards until they find a long-term answer at the position to pair with Victor Wembanyama.
Here’s more from Fischer:
- Veteran point guard T.J. McConnell was viewed as a possible target for teams looking for backcourt help, but the Pacers have indicated to potential trade partners that they don’t want to move him, Fischer reports. Some of the backup point guards who are available around the NBA, per Fischer, are Davion Mitchell (Kings), Cameron Payne (Bucks), Cory Joseph (Warriors), and Devonte’ Graham (Spurs).
- Kyle Lowry isn’t expected to join the Hornets prior to the trade deadline as Charlotte looks to flip him to a new team. If he’s still a Hornet once the deadline passes, Lowry will be a strong candidate for a buyout, and the Sixers appear to be a “real possibility” for the Philadelphia native, says Fischer.
- The Sixers are prioritizing fit alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey as they consider their trade options. They don’t appear to have significant interest in Bruce Brown and will have to seriously consider whether Dejounte Murray is the right piece next to Maxey, given the Hawks‘ high asking price for Murray, Fischer writes. Atlanta is reportedly seeking two first-round picks and a starting-caliber player for the guard.
- The Rockets have their eye on a pair of Trail Blazers, according to Fischer, who says Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams have both drawn interest from Houston. The Lakers and Knicks are among the other teams that have been connected to Brogdon.
- The Pelicans and Magic are two teams that rival executives expect to be in the market for a point guard in the summer, though New Orleans is focused more on the center spot for now, per Fischer.
Hawks want 2 Firsts and a starter for Murray
Lakers need 3rd team to help
LeBron should facilitate a trade to Philly his only hope for a ring.
I can’t stand Lebron right now but I’d love him on the sixers. Similar to how I felt about Bryce Harper. Once he’s playing for your team, you love it. Back in the day, that was the thought of Pete Rose. If he was playing on another team you could not stand him. If he played for your team it was great.
Lakers have no shot at Murray. Even if they include reaves they might not be able to get it done and I don’t see them including him. Lakers are kinda screwed right now. Seems like lavine might be their best option
They’d be better off doing nothing in that case. Murray is overrated, tbh. His defense has regressed a lot from San Antonio. Still good, but nowhere near as good as he used to be.
LaVine is just a waste of assets at his price point. He’s a worse Tyler Herro at this point in his career.
As a bulls fan believe me I’m familiar w lavines many flaws, but saying he’s worse than herro is blasphemous
I don’t see Murray being the difference for the Lakers.
I do trust Hubie Brown
Lakers aren’t winning another ring any time soon. LeBron won’t ever win another ring unless he opts out of his $50M P/O and signs with the Celtics at the minimum next year.
Might happen after they sign bronny with the 60th pick
2 firsts Fournier and Grimes for Murray get it done Knicks..still have 6 firsts in the chamber for that “superstar” in the offseason….although if we keep playing the way they did against Denver maybe just stand as is idk
I don’t like the Brunson-Murray fit. Murray needs the ball and it’d be too small of a backcourt. Imo Knicks should go for Bruce brown, it’ll cost less and fit their team identity better .
I think Derozan is a better potential fit actually but no indication yet that bulls want to move him and I don’t want LaVine at all…Even if Murray doesn’t fit with Brunson he can be flipped again in the summer for the “Superstar”
Murray can play off the ball and is a good defender. He can also bring up the ball which would give Brunson a break, especially during the postseason. Murray gives you 20PPG, 5 rebs and 6 assists per game, plus almost 2 steals. Much taller that Brunson as well.
I agree with benjivain. Brown would be better. I even like Keldon Johnson and Tim Hardaway there. Murray is to small to play SG 6’3 no thank you. Tried it once in his career in Atlanta and it didn’t work
Murray is 6′ 5″. He’s much taller than he appears.
That makes sense. Knicks get rid of the dead weight in Fornier. Why they gave him so much money after having mediocre stats is beyond me. He earns almost the same as Brunson and sits on the bench.
Fournier is for salary matching only Grimes is who Atlanta really wants…Fourniers contract is expiring anyway…he just set the Knicks season record for 3’s he’s got value off someone’s bench for sure
Why aren’t sixers interested in brown? He’s a perfect fit imo, they need that versatile connector dude that they’ve been missing since they lost tucker
Because Daryl Morrey hasn’t a clue.
Brown is paid way too much for the Sixers to consider trading for him. Would take too many depth pieces to make it work money wise.
All it would take is morris, house, and a pick. For that I’d do it if I’m Philly. If the market gets steeper then I’d bow out, but no rzn they shouldn’t do it if that’s all it takes. Brown helps them immensely and has a team option for next year so they retain flexibility .
Morris is a key depth piece man. The frontcourt depth is weak AF.
Feels like yall would have enough btwn batum, Harris, reed, roco, and Martin, plus whoever you’d get in a trade, no?
RoCo hasn’t placed since December and KMJ is more of a guard than a PF, and a non factor almost all year.
Kyle Lowry could be a cool pick up as a buyout candidate but not exactly needed with Maxey paired by either Pat Bev or DAnthony Melton.
Both those guys pair nicely cause they defend well, have that veteran experience and can operate either on or off the ball.
Lowry defensively is worse than both but would offer more offensively but not a hell of a lot. He is quite old and slow now. The sorry line of returning home would be nice.
I think we should be sniffing around two guys.
Andrew Wiggins and John Collins.
Wiggins firstly played college ball with Embiid.
Looks as if GSW is shopping him around, we have good role players on expiring deals with some young talent but not much draft capital. Wiggins has been pretty poor this season but he’s somewhat proven as a decent 3 and D forward and I think he’d slot in nicely as the 4th option and being a good defender.
My second option John Collins, Utah is definitely shopping him and trying to do a salary dump. I think he’s being really good depth as a back up 4 and potential small ball 5. He torched us a couple times with the hawks. Just like his height, length and his shooting ability.
I like your thinking. But if they want to do one stop shopping, I’d got to the blazers and try to grab Brogdan, Grant and yes…Thybulle. Those three give the sixers options to shift guys around and run a few different units. Unlike Rivers, Nurse uses guys too for different situations so he maximizes a roster nicely.
Knicks 122 — Nuggets 84
oh oh OH my God …….
Portland might take Thompson and a pick + contract filler for Brogdon and Thybulle.
What about Wolves get Caruso for Milton, Brown jr & a 1st round pick? In addition, trade Wendell Moore & a 2nd for Bones Hyland/Clippers? This would improve PG Guard & shooting… for playoffs & into next year.
Guess Wolves would have to go Wizards 2nd & like Josh Minot or NAW as no 1st round pic for Caruso.
