Former Wizards guard Ryan Rollins, who is now a free agent after being waived by the team on Monday, has been accused of repeatedly shoplifting from a Target store in Virginia, reports Josh Robbins of The Athletic.
As Robbins details, police alleged in documents on file at Alexandria General District Court that Rollins stole small household items on seven different occasions between September and November.
The items stolen in each case – including groceries, body wash, and candles – were valued at less than $1,000, and the second-year guard has been charged with seven counts of petit larceny, Robbins adds. That’s considered a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia.
Rollins, who was sent from Golden State to Washington in last summer’s Chris Paul/Jordan Poole trade, appeared in only 12 games for the Warriors as a rookie and wasn’t playing much for the Wizards either. The 2022 second-rounder averaged 4.1 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 6.6 minutes per game across 10 appearances for Washington, while also playing in nine games for the Capital City Go-Go.
Still, Rollins was viewed as a solid defender and was only 21 years old, with a guaranteed minimum salary ($1,719,864) this season and a $600K partial guarantee on his 2024/25 salary. The timing of his release raised some eyebrows, especially given the fact that the 6-31 Wizards can afford to be patient with their young players.
While it’s logical to assume the allegations against Rollins factored into his release, Robbins doesn’t explicitly say as much, and team president Michael Winger declined to confirm that.
“We just recently learned of the charges against Ryan. We cannot comment on that matter, or the basis for our roster decisions,” Winger said, before adding: “We do take our role very seriously as citizens of the DMV, representatives of our fans and a team our community can be proud of. These are expectations, not aspirations. We’re eager to move forward with our team as constituted and pursue excellence on and off the court.”
According to Robbins, a February court hearing has been scheduled for Rollins, who has yet to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. Although he’s free to sign with any NBA team besides Golden State, the former Toledo standout may not get his next opportunity until his legal situation is resolved.
Rollins was doing it wrong. Should have taken a bunch (20-30) buddies with him and looted the place good ol’ American smash-and-grab style. Then none of the employees would have dared to report or even record him, unless they intend to get fired from their jobs.
Now he can do what politicians do and claim to be innocent and have fools donate to his defense fund which he will pocket the money. The good old American way claim you are innocent and get people to praise you.
It is against the lew
What a loser. Rather than improve his game, maybe play in Europe or so he would rather become a thief.
Lamello Ball is a thief and clowns still watch him play…
lol. wrong ball.
LiAngelo Ball not LaMelo!
How do you know he is not in gym? Rat working – we do not know due to singtsrn mistakes
We are all clowns, paying up more and more at Target each day while this loser is swiping body wash and candles for fun.
20 years ago most retail stores had security and undercover security to catch thieves. Now none of them do and instruct their security and employees to not confront a thief. Only thing they can do is get a car plate number and call the police. Thanks to CEOs that never worked in a store to make the decisions on a account sheet.
To be fair, the “new” policy prevents things like the murders of Terry McMillan and Blake Mohs, both of whom were Home Depot employees killed by shoplifters. It truly isn’t safe to confront people anymore when so many whackjobs just carry a gun everywhere.
The problem is that every shoplifter knows they can go in and take whatever they want and leave. Watch how regular stores will disappear in 20 years and online shopping will take over.
Will take over? I feel like I haven’t stepped foot in a store since before the pandemic
Yeah, but it’s just stuff. Not your stuff. I’m not saying it’s ok to steal, but I’m also not getting nonplussed about people stealing from billionaires. Regular stores are disappearing. I hope they continue to and the only actual stores are mom & pop shops. Also, a human life isn’t worth a bunch of detergent some idiots are stealing.
Actually it effects everyone. The company I sales rep for has seen product put in glass cases in one account. Sales drop way down because nobody wants to wait around for somebody with a key. Sales are down my hours are cut in that account. The myth is stores can write off stolen items. Store with high theft close all the time so people lose their jobs over it.
Stores like Target don’t need to worry about that, though, because their revenue is increasing and their net income is way up. Sure, they may have to cut some jobs here and there and make other wholesale changes, but people go to Target and people pay for items in Target; a shoplifter here and there doesn’t negate the strides they have made with profit and that is reflected in their reported earnings. They saw a 37% rise in net income in Q4 from Q3. It’s not worth it to risk employee lives over a $7 bottle of body wash.
Walgreens is a bit of a joke. At one point, they had 5 stores within about 6 blocks of each other in downtown SF. I’ve done Technician work at their stores. Half the employees are in the backroom. I’ve had to teach employees how to do some of their tasks.
No surprise there. Walgreens tried to blame theft on why they closed stores then it came out there was not a rise in theft. High tech moved out of those locations and now very little foot traffic since covid.
Absolutely we should have a team of armed guards at every Walgreens to keep our deodorant (and country) safe
Miscommunication… he thought he had a tab ;)
No he’s only stealing because he needs it to survive lol
Wasted his money on spinning rims I guess ♂️
It’s funny because in California anything under $950 is a shoulder shrug. So this is probably been a habit for a few years including the warrior years. It’s just now that in Washington he gets rung up for it.
The police do not respond to many stores in California because the store refuse to prosecute shoplifters. Example SF police was frustrated with Walgreens because they would not send a employee to court to represent the store. Walgreens felt it wasn’t worth it to lose a employee wages for that day to prosecute a criminal.
The other side of the coin is that we can’t single this guy out for this crime because he makes a high NBA salary. You’ve got guys make a hundreds of thousands of dollars cheating on their taxes and you’ve got people driving a Lexus with disability grocery cards and Welfare checks.
It’s all around us, Ryan Rollins is just one of hundreds of thousands of Thieves. Hopefully as a Young Man a slap on the wrist will help him turn the corner.
He needs therapy for sure. SEVEN times. Goodness. At least he has a guarantee income for awhile, but this is the type of guy that players union(Iggy) need to help.
kleptomaniac is the word to describe him.
Ya I can think of another word
Well maybe if he hadn’t been released Adam Silver could have suspended him indefinitely so that he’d only miss 15 games or so while he resolved all his issues in therapy in less than 2 months.
Maddog, you have to want help for therapy to work. Does Ryan Rollins want help at 22 years old? Maybe, maybe not.
Does Draymond Green want help at 34 years old? Maybe, maybe not. We shall see.
My fingers are crossed that he has finally reached a point where he will turn the corner. A man in his mid-30s should come to that realization you would think.
You would hope, but even the most willing participant in therapy isn’t cured in weeks. It takes awhile to resolve years of issues and/or bad habits that lead to poor decisions.
We shall see if Draymond has done a 180, but call me skeptical at this point. Goes to the old saying that a tiger can’t change its stripes.
The track record of 10 years or 12 years gives you a right to be skeptical.
I lean the other way and believe in cold turkey decisions. That’s if the person has had enough. Let’s see if Draymond green has had enough.
He thought he was still in San Francisco….
Or Toledo
Cry for help and attention from the deep pine
It’s a cultural thang
Alot of winners lately. Rollins, Miller, Kurucs, Porter Jr, Bridges, Primo, Howard, Giddey, Bouknight, Morant, Devonte Graham, Harrell, jaxson Hayes, Curuso and Terrance Davis
Clearly, you weren’t around for the 80s and 90s guys. This is child’s play.
Oh I was. I’m just saying lately. I will come back with some names. Eddie Johnson on Atlanta was horrible
6 ft 2 Eddie Johnson not 6’8 Eddie Johnson, correct?
Yes Gary
Bernard King did what? I didn’t know that, Geoff Huston damn, i didn’t know David Wingate was that horrible of a human being, Anthony Mason was nasty too, i don’t count the driving violations, cocaine use and Green. Did I miss anyone. Jayson Williams, Richard Dumas, Karl Malone
Isaiah Rider was a dickhead. Tom Payne was a complete scumbag. Oliver Miller, Will Bedford, Sly Williams. Qyntel Woods was a dogfighter and animal abuser, plus drug offenses.
What did Oliver Miller do instead of eating? I remember Q Woods. The jail blazers. I remember the day Bedford hit 4 threes in a game. I’ll have to look up what Sly Williams and Oliver Miller did. Terrence Williams is sitting in jail
Professional athletes (and basketball players!) do everything (good and bad) that every other person does… being a pro athlete doesn’t make them exempt to being a human being. A “regular person” stole from Target yesterday…. WalMart the day before.
Pro athletes steal (in some form), drink, do drugs, slap their significant other, cheat on their spouse, donate money to charity, go to church, don’t slap their wives/significant others, BUY from Target and WalMart… all the things regular people do.
Just because they play a sport better than most people doesn’t mean they’re not a regular person.
A report said he also took pastreys. He wanted to lead the league in steals AND turnovers.
Lame. You’re trying way too hard.
Lol I thought it was pretty good
Dude thought he was an All star and they wete gifts…
