Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson and big man Kelly Olynyk are among the players the Knicks have inquired on ahead of next Thursday’s trade deadline, league sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Scotto says New York registered trade interest in both Utah players earlier in January.
According to Scotto, Knicks wing Quentin Grimes came up in separate discussions with the Jazz for Clarkson and Olynyk. Ian Begley of SNY.tv previously identified Utah as one of the teams with interest in Grimes.
Sources tell HoopsHype that Olynyk has drawn interest from several clubs and is viewed by rival executives as the Jazz’s top trade candidate, though one NBA scout who spoke to Scotto is more bullish about Clarkson’s ability to make an impact for a new team.
“Whatever team can get Clarkson will be a game changer,” that scout said. “I think he’s the best of the volume scorers available on the trade market.”
Here’s more on the Knicks:
- According to Scotto, Grimes has also come up in New York’s discussions with the Hawks, another team previously named by Begley as a team with interest in the third-year swingman. The two clubs discussed Grimes in separate negotiations involving Dejounte Murray and AJ Griffin, per Scotto, who adds that Atlanta views Grimes as a potential three-and-D fit next to Trae Young.
- Knicks forward OG Anunoby missed a second consecutive game on Tuesday due to inflammation in his elbow, but he’s still considered day-to-day, so it doesn’t sound like his absence should be a lengthy one, writes Peter Botte of The New York Post. As Botte relays, head coach Tom Thibodeau said on Tuesday that he hopes to have more information on Julius Randle‘s recovery timeline for his dislocated right shoulder within “a day or two.”
- Despite being without Anunoby and Randle again, the Knicks won their eighth consecutive game on Tuesday, registering a 118-103 victory at home over Utah. Precious Achiuwa played a significant role in his second start as a Knick, scoring 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting in a season-high 40 minutes. “I’m getting more and more comfortable with my teammates,” Achiuwa said, per Andrew Crane of The New York Post. “They’re getting comfortable with me and my style of play as well, and just playing the right way, making the right reads.”
“In 14 games with the Knicks, Anunoby has averaged 15.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.1 blocks. He is shooting 51.6% from the field and 39.1% from three.”
If you look at stats alone. You’d think he and RJ are about the same. But if you watch games. You understand What positional size and team fit is. And how important it is to team sport. And the importance of team D. His shooting splits are better and takes less shots. Overall just a much better fit. Something I didn’t even realize. Thank you Thibs and Rose. Still love RJ and IQ.
And for the Haters (I know who UR).
Achiuwa had 18 pts, 5 reb, 2 blk, solid D. Against Jazz.
Only 24 yrs old. A guy we need to be a backup 4. And provide depth. Especially while Randle is down.
If you watched Jazz gm. I hope you saw that Clarkson wouldn’t be a good fit in NY. Need more toughness and will to win here. I just don’t see them going after him. I’d rather have Sexton if they trade with Jazz.
DeRozan >>>>> to Knicks
18, 5 rebs, 2 blocks
Please, Al, convince AKME to do your favorite trade. Please.
It’s called ACME …. get it right. Daffy

NY just needs to trade Evan Fournier, Ryan A and picks for Keldon Johnson or Bruce Brown. Trade Malachi Flynn for Johnny Flynn, Rose or any other pg. Sign Bismack B
When this team gets healthy I don’t think they need anything really…anything they do at the trade deadline will just be gravy…the key is how long out and how limited when he gets back Randle is going to be…Josh Hart triple double DD is shooting 3s lights out I bet Golden State are bummed…Brunson doing his thing and Achiuwa coming around
I have said the type of player Trae needs next to him. Is an elite defender that can shoot. All he needs to do is 14 pts a gm. But Trae also needs a top rim protector. A center that can control the paint and rebound. Those two type of players work best with Traes great offensive talents.
Grimes is a good choice imo. If Grimes ever gets his handle right. He will go to next level.
Brunson and Murray can fit. Cause Brunson plays without the ball. Where as Trae doesn’t as well. Thibs offense is also helpful for their fit. I get Murray timeline is a better fit for this Knicks team. I still think DeRozan is a better fit.
I like Murray and Griffin. I don’t see how they get both. Have to be more picks, I guess.
Clarkson, a game changer? Only if a team is dumb enough to trade for him. Volume shooters don’t make good in-season trade targets, particular ones that aren’t shooting well at the time, and haven’t for most of the prior 2 seasons.
I like the six perimeter players we currently have in the rotation. Behind them, we could use more than Flynn, Fournier and Arch, for sure. But if the NYK add a short-term G who will command full rotation minutes in lieu of the guys that are currently getting them, they’ll regret it. Maybe as soon as this season, but certainly by the middle of next season. Adding Burks or a similar player for a SRP might make sense. He can play 1-3, and the coaching staff liked him when he was here.
Current state would make me think that Miles Bridges would be a target as he can fill in for Randle and play off the bench when JR returns. Get some more size and flexibility at the forward position as opposed to have Hart guard PFs when injuries hit.
Ideally, Murray would be a good ‘system’ acquisition, but ball control is going to be an issue considering how Brunson excels when he has it. I’d still make the deal for him, talent is talent, but would set the expectations that he’ll be the PG for ~20 minutes a game at most while Brunson runs the show. Grimes, Fournier, a bunch of draft picks should get it done. If not, Bridges would be my go to.
I like Bridges gm for this team. Definitely has the toughness and desire. Just don’t think Knicks would add a player with his kind of troubles. Knicks have cleaned up their image. Don’t see them going backwards here.
Bridges fits well I guess yeah, but #%€$ him and no chance, sorry.
We shouldn’t have to compromise so much while acknowledging less than ideal fit when making an argument to trade for an all-star caliber player, imo. The OG trade worked because of the seamless fit. Now, wait for another one like that. Keep playing the long game that got us here.
Trading for Murray is like cutting the square peg in half (taking the ball out of brunson’s hands) so that we can fit it into the round hole. We need look no further than the horribly failed experiment Murray is currently sitting in, to see that it’s good chance of fail. Save the picks for someone who isn’t best at playing the position our best player plays.
You have to look at Murray. Thru Thibs and Roses eyes. Knicks were definitely looking to get him. So you ask yourself why would they pursue Murray.
His timeline fits this rebuild. He’s a 2way player, Thibs kind of player. I’d agree that he is best as a PG. But you look at Thibs offense. It’s not built for a traditional PG. If Earl the Pearl and Clyde can share the ball. Then Brunson and Murray should have no problem. Both are scoring PGs or really combo guards. Imo in Thibs system Murray will work better than in Atlanta.
What we think or want. Is not what Knicks will do. I’m not even sure Knicks will make a major trade this yr. Considering the injuries we have. I can see them make a minor trade. And get ready for a major trade next yr.
There’s another good reason to not pursue Bridges (and it would apply even if he were a boy scout). He wouldn’t come with Bird Rights. We likely wouldn’t be able to resign him (certainly not at 120% of his 7.9 mm current salary). I don’t know if we’ll have the full MLE or if that will be enough.
You want to know some history. And the reason Knick fans are considered Basketball IQ fans. Starts with the history of basketball in NYC. And one of best basketball IQ teams ever. 1968-75 teams were all about team ball and winning. This has been passed down thru generations of fans. Good reading here.

Walking wounded at this point. Be hard for the knicks to go deep missing Robinson and especially Randle who’ll probably be 10-12 weeks minimum. If healthy acquiring Clarkson would be exactly what they need. Knicks will miss I.Q in the playoffs.
I love the Knicks. I’ve been waiting something like 30 years for the team to be this exciting again, this likeable, this close to contending for a title. This front office has done things the right way, shown discipline during the rebuild, and made some mistakes sure, but generally built a strong level of trust with this fan here.
I disagree with but understand the fans who aren’t as patient, who want to make a big or semi-big trade because they think we have a shot this year or to help with the current injury problems. That’s just not the path I believe is best, unless there are players becoming available who nobody is talking about. None of these names are anything worth giving up Grimes plus other valuable assets for, imo.
Even with all the injuries now we’re still rolling. To mess with that chemistry is a big risk to me, a risk I’m ready to accept when incoming all-star player A is a guy who makes us a legit and dangerous contender. And a guy who fits the roster well. If/when we’re giving up assets, it should be for someone who’s gonna ride with us and try to win a title for a few years, hopefully alongside Julius and our Nova Big 3. No trading assets for high-end rentals, please. I’m not with hurting our chances in 2025 and beyond, to go for it this year. But that’s just me and I get it when others don’t see it that way or are impatient cuz they’ve been waiting even longer.
Personally I think an ok trade is for someone expiring or cheap who can give our bench depth and possibly play some minutes. Trade a less valuable FRP plus whatever. Or don’t. I’d take the chance that Julius and possibly Mitch will be back and healthy again this season, and that a win-now now could look bad or pointless later. I still have PTSD from all these short-sighted deals over the years that kept setting us back even further. This group has been on fire, OG is a beast and basically just got here. It’s easy to believe Julius is gonna come back strong – the rest could even be a disguised blessing. Trust the plan, maximize the contention window, continue to trust the importance of fit with what we now have in place.
DeM DeR, Drummond ——- to Knicks
Mitch, Fournier, two #1 picks to Bulls
