The Knicks have waived big man Taj Gibson ahead of today’s salary guarantee deadline, the team announced (Twitter links).
Gibson signed a non-guaranteed, minimum-salary contract with the Knicks on December 15 and appeared in 10 games for the club, averaging 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 9.7 minutes per night.
Initially expected to merely provide some frontcourt depth and locker room leadership, the 38-year-old saw more playing time than anticipated due to injuries to centers Mitchell Robinson and Jericho Sims.
However, with Sims healthy again and Precious Achiuwa added to the roster in last weekend’s OG Anunoby trade, Gibson once again found himself pushed down the depth chart — he hadn’t played at all since Monday.
Gibson’s release doesn’t necessarily mean the Knicks are done with him for the season. He could return on a 10-day contract or two, and if the team still has an open roster spot after the trade deadline comes and goes, he’d be an obvious candidate for a rest-of-season deal.
According to Ian Begley of SNY.tv (Twitter link), New York decided to part with Gibson for now to create some additional roster flexibility ahead of the trade deadline, since the club expects to continue to be active.
Gibson had been one of two players on the Knicks’ roster who was on a non-guaranteed contract for 2023/24. The other one, Ryan Arcidiacono, will be retained and will have his full $2,528,233 salary (and $2,019,706 cap hit) guaranteed, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic (Twitter link).
Assuming he clears waivers, Gibson will count for $477,630 in dead money on the Knicks’ salary cap.
Bulls should ask him for a homecoming, they need a PF/C who can take minutes and help train PWill how to get more boards
I expect they’ll do a series of 10 day contracts with him for as long as they can, and then give him a rest of the year deal if they don’t acquire another C. He did get off his couch for them.
Taj is loved by Thibs. He could be back. He’ll probably end up on Thibs coaching staff. After this yr. Taj is good people.
Knicks have a trade exception they can use to get another big, center.

Make him an assistant if he can’t land anything. He’s the type of good that is priceless on the bench with the kids.
Siakam to Hawks
Hunter, Okongwu, to Raptors
Murray to Knicks
Three #1 picks and Fournier to Raptors. One pick swap ………
I feel like the Hawks would want more. Yeah, they got Siakam, but they depleted their depth and don’t have Murray. Grimes and another asset might make that work for them.
Good trade I agree Hawks would need either one of those picks or Grimes to even it out…either Murray or Derozan are what I think puts Knicks over the top
How to reheat smash burger
Yeah ….. true. Raptors could throw in a bench player. Hawks don’t use Okongwu right imo. Siakam is a good fit in Atlanta. And Murray is not in Toronto. Just don’t think Hawks would do business with Knicks.
Knicks aren’t getting Murray for Fournier and three #1’s. Put the pipe down.
That’s what ATL acquired him for (3 FRPs, 1 swap), and he should have been worth more back then (younger, coming off a career year, cheaper contract and hadn’t struggled with his current position).
I do doubt, though, that ATL is willing to give him up for Siakam.
He wanted out of San Antonio, thus reducing their leverage. Still, was a bad deal for the Spurs and I’m sure Atlanta isn’t going to trade him for a package they used when he’s playing well.
The whole point of Hawks moving him. Is cause it’s NOT working. So they don’t want to be on the hook for his contract that kicks in next yr. Then will be tougher to move.

Personally I’d rather DeM. But I know Knicks rather Murray ……
Murray would be ideal due to his defensive nature and all around game – thus providing a starting PG if anything were to happen to Brunson, such as an injury. Brunson isn’t as dependent on handling the ball as Young is, so I believe it may work.
No to DRo unless it’s dumping Fournier and a couple of protected picks.

Once again you just make it up as you go along. Murray never wanted out. Spurs wanted him out to tank for Wemby. And have assets to build around him.
I reside in San Antonio, he wanted out. It’s all we heard.
All the so called experts say it will take two #1 picks. Granted only Detroits #1 pick (Knicks) will be high.
It’s looking like Murray will be moved. Not many teams can pull it off.
So for all the RJ nay sayers ……
37 pts, 6 ast, 6 reb ….
Blow out of Warriors
Quickley 9 pts, 5 reb, 10 ast.
Raptors have to like those 10 ast.
This is for you too padam ….. padaBOOM
Get rct to back you on this too .
RJ the real talent in the trade …….
IQ is the more valuable asset in the trade. When will you get a clue?
You don’t know the value of Quickley. Cause you don’t know talent.
I’m still waiting for you to tell us how Knicks are worse. Seems like you need a clue to explain it.
The answer is, both teams are better. It was evident: OG was too similar to Siakam and Barnes, just like Quickley was too similar to Brunson and Barrett was to Randle. Each team dealt from an area of surplus (3&D forwards/shot-creating guards) which happened to be the exact areas in which the other team was deficient. Everybody won this trade: each player and each team.
Yes, seems to be a good trade for both the Knicks & Raptors. Everyone’s, well mostly everyone, is overlooking RJ Barrett. Just saying he’s Canadian. At 6’6,” just 23 years old & from Duke is quite a resume and makes me think he is overlooked and undervalued.
Always loved RJ and still do. Didn’t want to move him in any Mitchell deals, felt it defeated the point. Raptors are 3-1 since the deal and the combo is doing fine. IQ can finally show his full potential.
A win perhaps for both teams though I’m still not a fan of the deal and losing RJ, but the settings may benefit all players involved as well as the teams.
Whether or not Murray wanted out of SAS, it wouldn’t affect his market value much if at all. He was signed for multiple years and there were 28 other teams in the league. Consider that he might be overrated by some fans, but perhaps not as much by the league as a whole. While his top line offensive numbers are (still) good (everyone’s are these days), they are less than that when you dig down abit. Defensively, he hasn’t been the same player in ATL, and it might be as simple as he’s guarding bigger people.
I looked at Murray vs IQ over last year and the first part of this year. Adjusted for playing time, there’s simply no edge for Murray in any category (base rating or metrics), and that includes defense. Whereas IQ grades out as a clearly better distance shooter. Both played backup PG in addition to SG during that period. Murray is longer, but that is more notable when he’s covering PGs. IQ is at least as strong and long for a PG as well. OK, IQ is gone, but if he didn’t fit with Brunson, why would Murray. OR, if Murray doesn’t fit with TY, why will he with Brunson. It’s a leap of faith at best.
