The Bucks have reached out to Doc Rivers to discuss having him take over their head coaching job, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski confirms.
As reported earlier in the day, Rivers is the top choice to replace first-year coach Adrian Griffin, who was abruptly fired on Tuesday.
CNN Sports, as relayed by the NBA on TNT, reported on Tuesday night that Rivers had accepted the position (video link). However, that report has yet to be corroborated by other media outlets.
Rivers already has a connection to the Bucks, having informally served as a consultant for Griffin this season at the behest of the club.
Here’s more on the Bucks’ coaching situation:
- Griffin offered a diplomatic answer to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report regarding his dismissal: “I appreciate the opportunity the Bucks gave me. You can’t control everything,” Griffin said in a phone interview. “I feel good about the job we did. I appreciate my coaching staff for all their hard work. I always wanted to be a head coach in this league. I couldn’t have asked for a better roster. I got to coach Giannis (Antetokounpo), Dame (Lillard), Khris (Middleton), Brook (Lopez). Dream come true. Hopefully, I get another shot at it, but overall, I’m just thankful.”
- Bucks general manager Jon Horst and assistant GM Milt Newton began closely observing practices and shootarounds in the last 10 days or so, Haynes reports in the same story. That began raising the eyebrows of the coaching staff and players. If they don’t land Rivers, the Bucks also have Jeff Van Gundy and Nate McMillan on their short list of candidates, Haynes adds.
- Griffin met with his top four players after the team’s loss to Indiana during the in-season tournament last month and they all spoke about what was working, what wasn’t working and how they could best be utilized. Griffin told the players that sacrifices were required, but bickering in the locker room continued shortly thereafter.
- Griffin was hired at the endorsement of Antetokounmpo, but that endorsement had more to do with whom the two-time MVP didn’t want as head coach, writes Marc Stein at Substack. Nick Nurse was high on the Bucks’ list of candidates before he was hired by the Sixers, according to Stein, who says Antetokounmpo wanted the franchise to go in a different direction and chose to back Griffin. Moving on from Griffin now was a far easier move than finding a difference-making trade, given Milwaukee’s limited assets, Stein adds.
- When Lillard’s former head coach, Terry Stotts, chose to resign from the Bucks’ staff just prior to the season opener, the reason was that Griffin felt that he was being undermined by Stotts, according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer. Stotts was brought in to mentor Griffin but they clashed on scheme and philosophy.
Having one of the best records in the league and he gets canned? That’s like picking up the best looking chick at the bar and taking her home and she kicks you in the nuts and leaves. Or so I’ve heard. From friends. And guys I hate.
Darvin Ham and LeBron for Giannis and Banjo the buck.
Doc set up Griffin to fail and now he gets a job with a contender. Meanwhile Griffin goes home to an empty house and a hungry man dinner, totally broken.
Doc is king of failing upwards, still sucking, and getting fired again after bad playoff coaching…
Yes, but I swear Doc has apparently used his money extremely wisely.
He has to have the goods on countless higher ups in the league, because there is absolutely no reason he should continue getting these high profile jobs after constantly and repeatedly coming up short.
I mean, it basically took one of the most complete rosters ever assembled with three of the league’s best stars for Doc to actually win a title. That team even only won a single title with Doc as their head coach. They easily should have won ay least one more, but he couldn’t help himself
In my mind, Doc is the Mike McCarthy of the NBA…
That’s disrespectful to Big Mike..lol
Thibideaux was essentially the defensive coach of that team. The best thing I can say about Doc is that he got out of the way that year.
You’re exactly correct. It took Thibs defensive mind and having the best roster in the league to make it fool proof…lol
Doc was basically their glorified cheerleader..After his title, he got a bug head, got more involved schematically, and just couldn’t help but to mess it up..lol
He’s been living off the success of the big 3 ever since. I just find it absolutely insane how he keeps getting these chances, and teams actually think HE, of all people, is somehow the guy to take them to a championship..
Absolutely blows my mind..Literally almost every hair-brained fan even sees Doc for what he is, yet these owners and GMs think he’s some type of championship caliber coach.
I am sure Griffin gets paid the rest of his contract, he got that going for him. Shame the opportunity was taken from him.
If Giannis prevented Nurse, that’s just one more reason to never let players be involved in any decisions. How many times do the clubs have to get their fingers burnt before they learn something? Star players are terrible GMs.
Lebron says hi – though he has both his hits and some big misses.
Yeah, that Westbrook fiasco was pretty bad.
He also has lobbied for his buddies to get paid more than they should, using his leverage of leaving…Then, ultimately left anyways, leaving his former teams’ options extremely limited and void of resources.
That’s the price you pay to win a title, though, so it’s definitely a give and take. It’s just a matter of whether or not it’s worth it to that owner and franchise.
I can assure you if Jerry Jones owned an NBA team, he would have happily traded a title for a few years of mediocrity and a rebuild..
Lebron has way more misses than hits. He also wanted JR Smith, and wanted D Russell.
Gianni’s signed his extension after. That is the most important outcome of the coaching decision.
Nurse would have been ideal. We all know why Giannis lobbied for Griffin.
Not even a Bucks fan, but please please don’t hire Doc.. that’s just so traumatic to hear that it’s even a possibility lol
Why does everyone rip on Doc? He knows the game, his players love him and he’s won a championship.
Oh yeah that’s right, everyone loves to join the bandwagon and pile on
Lol !!!
Maybe because he’s *visibly* terrible in the playoffs? Have you not seen how badly his teams operate in clutch situations? Ever? He’s been that way since *Orlando*, the first time.
You can know the game and be a bad coach. All evidence points to him being a bad coach. His offensive systems (or lack of) have consistently derailed teams in the playoffs.
Is every coach that has ever won a championship a good coach automatically?
Bring him back to his roots
58-24 last year and the team played much better defense perhaps they shouldn’t have fired budenholzer
Bud is still on their payroll. They should just offer him the job again, seriously.
I agree I thought that was a mistake. Rather Bud over Doc but water under the bridge now
Consultant doc: you need a new coach
Doc: I accept.
Celtics are you paying attention? If you want to win it all. Dump Joe!
Rivers is one of the most overrated coaches in sports history. The guy has made the finals twice I think right? Hasn’t won a title in 16 years despite coaching on some amazing teams.
CP3 and Blake would alternate being injured.
PG and Kawaii had some injuries and the bubble ruined flow
Ben Simmons didn’t want to get better offensively.
Magic weren’t amazing and Grant Hill never played
Should have won multiple with Celtics, but Perkins did get hurt
A lot of his bad results come from injures.
Every team has injuries. What was the excuse with the Sixers the last couple of years? Celtics also had many years other than the Perkins injury year.
The Perkins injury should also not have derailed their entire scheme. It’s not like Garnett was the only other guy on the roster capable of grabbing offensive boards. Doc using Rasheed Wallace or Glen Davis intelligently should have been enough to mitigate that loss. Sure, Perkins was better, but they had Garnett. It’s not like they should’ve folded like a wet tissue. They got absolutely punk’d in Game 6, as a unit.
I’m sure MIL is just now reaching out to Doc Rivers. Whether he’ll be interested, who knows? The suspense must be difficult to endure.
Is Doc the Bills personified?
