The Mavericks are among a group of teams with interest in Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma, Marc Stein reports in his latest Substack article.
Minority owner and head of basketball operations Mark Cuban confirmed during a recent radio appearance that the team would like to further fortify its frontcourt. Stein reported that was the case weeks ago.
“If we can get a big who can also create off the dribble, that’d be a plus,” Cuban said. “Six-eight or bigger.”
Kuzma, 28, is 6’9″ and averaging 21.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG and 4.2 APG in 41 games (31.2 MPG) this season for the Wizards. The Mavs were also linked to Pascal Siakam, another power forward who can drive and score in a variety of ways.
According to Stein, the Wizards want a minimum of two-first round picks for Kuzma, and they seem to want higher value picks than the ones the Raptors received from Indiana for Siakam (two of the picks were in 2024, which is considered a weak draft; the other is top-four protected in 2026).
Stein also suggests Washington wants at least a first-round pick for each of Tyus Jones and Daniel Gafford, two other starters who — along with Kuzma — are “drawing no shortage of interest” ahead of the trade deadline, which is February 8. Like Kuzma, center Gafford is on a long-term contract, while point guard Jones is on an expiring $14MM deal.
While Siakam is certainly a more accomplished player than Kuzma, he’ll also be looking to sign a massive long-term contract this summer, whereas Kuzma is on a four-year, $90MM deal that descends over time, meaning he could be making a fraction of Siakam’s salary in a few seasons. As Stein writes, salary considerations are important for teams like the Mavs (Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving) and Kings (Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox) — another team with interest in Kuzma — that already have two players making the max or near it.
However, as Stein observes, the Mavs can only trade one first-round pick (2027) at the moment due to the Stepien rule, and the Wizards have remained steadfast in their months-long desire to accumulate first-rounders after failing to garner any when they had very little leverage in the trades of Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis. That was the case months ago when Dallas checked in on Gafford and Deni Avdija and nothing has changed since, Stein adds.
For what it’s worth, Avdija would also fit the bill as a forward who can make plays, but the poison pill provision would make it trickier to trade him and he’s having his best professional season at 23 years old.
Magic:
Tim Hardaway Jr
Tyus Jones
Wizards:
Jonathan Isaac
Markelle Fultz
Grant Williams
Markieff Morris
2024 – Round 1 (Magic)
2025 – Round 2 (Mavericks)
Mavericks:
Kyle Kuzma
Daniel Gafford
No Thanks
Awful for Wizards
Can Kuzma defend well enough, though? Doncic and Kyrie are already defensive liabilities. Mavs would need to contribute more than Grant (neutral value if that), Markieff (salary filler), Hardaway and a 2nd to pull that off. 2nd would have to be a 1st … Hardaway and Markieff might have to be replaced by Josh Green (poison pill contract) and Jaden Hardy.
You clearly don’t watch the mavs. Their defense have improved tremendously….
Also, yes, Kuzma is a decent defender. Not as good as he was last season or when he was with the Lakers, but still pretty positive on that end. Moreso if he has less offensive responsibility, which he would on a team with Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Why would Wizards give up 3 of their best trade chips that they want at least a first rounder for each for one first rounder and players who won’t be around for when they hope to compete.
So the Mavericks get rid of two contracts they don’t want and get back Kuz and Gafford? That’s not how this works.
Mavs can only trade 2027 pick.
A week draft, longest ever
I like the Lakers to trade for
Kuzma
Grant
Finney Smith
BB
Caruso
D Murray
2 of them
Why not?
Lakers have 2 Swaps and 2029 unprotected First
it says two first round picks
Maybe this June
They don’t have the money and talent to get 2.
Put everything on the table for Dejounte.
Washington needs to trade all three. Jones looked so good tonight. The Mavs have to go all in. Washington can flip Hardaway for a first If they get him. Hardway Green Hardy and prosper a first should work.
Siakam was a perfect fit for thr Mavs, they should’ve really made that trade work, even if it was the equivalent of 4 FRPs
Does Hardaway Jr. have positive trade value?
hardaway jr is currently front runner for 6moy
Kuzma isn’t worth 2 FRPs, regardless of quality. But if DAL is looking to dump THJ in the process, then he is. DAL needs to forget about dumping Williams, they just signed him for 4 years. Undersized 4’s don’t appreciate in value.
Kings : Will give them HB, DM and a 1st rnd pick for Kuzma !!
Not a Bad package at all, but isn’t too enticing for Wizards.
Unless they flip the players separately.
HB is losing value by the day. Davion can’t carve out meaningful minutes. Even so, this move guts any sort of defensive hopes Sac has. I like the trade because something has to happen and they missed on OG. Getting Kuzma is 10 times better than getting LaVine.
Dallas would have all players on the perimeters. Never will a Maverick step in the paint, for offense or defense.
Lively
That only because he got lost on the court.
jones jr, lively etc but ok
You would need to convince them that Hardy is worth a FRP, which I don’t think he is so..
What’s the market for kuzma? Not a bad player, proven he can be 3rd complimentary piece with all stars but who’s bidding against each other? Might be wise to hang onto him until better offers present themselves. Not exactly hurting their draft stocks. Teams rarely want to commit long term to contracts just started like kuz or Poole. G.Will, Green and a 1st is pretty steep for a team that refuses to play D. Give up two guys that do. Williams needs to be better for mavs though.
Washington waives Gil, Bernard and Livers then trade Kuzma, Tyus Jones and Gafford to Dallas for Grant Williams, Holmes, Maxi, Lively, Hardy, Prosper and a pick. Dallas promotes Lawson and looks at free agents
Dallas should try to make a trade with Utah though for Lauri and Kelly O
Mykind of thinking..
Mavs get: Ollynik and Markanen
Utah gets: Hardy, Holmes, Kleber , Prosper and 1st draft pick
Lauri, Kelly O, Yurtseven and Luka Samanic for Hardy, Holmes, Kleber, Prosper,Lively and two 1sts?
Mavs only have 2027 first round they can trade now. This offseason they will have 3 to trade.
I appreciate it. Well it would have to be one and maybe future considerations wink wink
Sounds as if Washington overvalues their players.
I’d like to see Washington take back deals with a perceived negative value and maybe marginal draft capital and try get those players. Especially younger guys such as John Collins, DeAndre Hunter, James Wiseman, Markelle Fultz, DAngelo Russell, Rob Williams to name a few.
It’s exactly what they’ve done in Marvin Bagley so just continue with that.
If dallas can find a way to get kuzma and wendall carter jr. I think they can reach wcf again
