The Raptors pulled a surprise by swinging a major trade before January, shipping OG Anunoby to the Knicks. It could be much tougher for them to deal their other starting forward, Pascal Siakam, Marc Stein reports in his latest Substack article.
Siakam is headed to unrestricted free agency unless he signs an extension. While Toronto could sign Siakam to a four-year extension — which would make him ineligible to be dealt this season — an acquiring team could only ink him to a two-year deal prior to free agency.
Siakam is unlikely to agree to a two-year extension, according to Stein, which means the Raptors would be hard-pressed to acquire multiple quality assets for a player who could wind up being a half-season rental.
As previously reported, the Mavericks, Hawks, Pacers and Kings have been mentioned as potential landing spots for Siakam. However, Stein hears that Dallas’ interest is somewhat overstated. While the Mavs are in the market for a power forward, he gets the sense that Siakam is not their top target.
The Pistons and Grizzlies could also eventually be in the mix, according to Stein.
Detroit could try to convince Siakam to stick around and join the team’s young core, highlighted by Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren; Memphis could try to sell Siakam on a future with Ja Morant feeding him the ball, though it’s questionable whether a Siakam-Jaren Jackson Jr. frontcourt would work.
As for Anunoby, Stein points out that Sam Rose — son of Knicks president of basketball operations Leon Rose — is one of his reps. So, New York presumably has a very good idea what it will take to re-sign Anunoby, who is expected to decline his player option this summer and enter free agency. It’s unlikely the Knicks would have been willing to give up Immanuel Quickley, who drew interest from other teams, unless they had a strong feeling Anunoby would re-sign, Stein writes.
The Knicks also retained all the first-round draft assets and the contract of Evan Fournier that includes a club option for next season. However, early indications are that New York won’t engage in an all-out pursuit of Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell, Stein adds.
2027 first 2 2nds 2028 first swap hardaway williams and hardy for pascal who says no
As a Raps fan I’d be on board, but Masai wants guys now that are on Scotties timeline. Warriors have more to offer if they want Pascal.
Hardaway, Holmes, Grant Williams, Maxi, Lively, Hardy and Prosper for Siakam, Jacob P and Temple. Raptors waive Young and Porter jr?
If hawks make Jalen Johnson available then sure. (obvious Capella and other player would be added to match salary). If kings make Keegan available in the trade (throw in Harrison for salary filler and likely Davion with 2 firsts) then yes.
Other than those two it makes no sense to trade Siakam. He just won raps the game vs cavs tonight!
Plus they have over a month before they need to make a decision. Definitely a bonus from making this trade so early.
Except that he will walk for nothing at the end of the year, like literally every raptor player besides OG over the past 10 years, Raptors are mid on their best days, trade siakam for any asset(s) you can and let Quick and Scottie be everything to the team while building the next few years
@joparx right….
So you hate raps, yet you seem emotional over this topic. Misery shows insecurities I guess.
If quick and scottie are “everything” id hate to see what nothing looks like lol
What about Siakam, Temple and Dennis S to the Bulls for Ball, Ayo, Carter, Patrick Williams, Terry and Phillips. Raptors waive Young and Porter jr?
Atlanta trades Bogdanovic, OO, Mills, bufkin, Johnson, Gueye and Griffin for Siakam and Temple with 2nds. Raptors waive Young, Mills and Porter. Then trade Jacob, Bogdanovic, Trent Jr and Dennis S for draft picks and bad contracts?
Siakam and Temple to the Kings for Harrison Barnes(flip), Lyles, Davian Mitchell and Sasha V and some picks (you pick) Kings promote Ellis and JTA. The Raptors waive Young and Porter jr
One of the most over rated players in the NBA. Another guy worth $15M on a great team that some foolish team will max out.
Julius Randle is overrated too and y’all called him a superstar.
He’s chosen an all star by coaches twice. Put up 39 on twin towers. Yeah ok
I don’t care about the views of other fans.
So put being an all star 2x makes you great? Dropping 39 in one game means anything? The more you talk the more folks realize you really don’t know basketball.
Atlanta trades Bogdanovic, OO, Mills, bufkin, Johnson, Gueye and Griffin for Siakam and Temple with 2nds. Raptors waive Young, Mills and Porter. Then trade Jacob, Bogdanovic, Trent Jr and Dennis S for draft picks and bad contracts.
I’m a Siakam supporter, but that might be too much to give from the Hawks.
Maybe Hunter, Bogdanovic (flip), Griffin and a lottery protected first (no 2nd rounders to ATL in this proposal).
Siakam’s trade value doesn’t match his production, as he would be a rental (he’s on an expiring contract).
Maybe another team can give more draft capital
There are MUCH harder players to move in the league…
This is a paid presentation by a team looking to get the price lowered on Siakim…
Stein is always wrong about the raptors that’s why he’s always mentioned on this rumor site. Just a rumor factory not a reporter.
He’s definitely a media rep who works for the agents and teams more than he does to keep the public informed…
I don’t mind their opinions on a podcast, but their reporting standards are pretty low…
Couldn’t an acquiring team just have a handshake agreement with Pascal and wait until free agency opens to sign him to a longer deal than 2 year extension?
Seems like a really dumb rule, just saying.
I don’t think Toronto is even really trying to move Siakam. His trade value is greatly diminished right now. They legitimately want to keep him. If they start clicking without OG, they will offer whatever they need to. If Siakam wants to leave, they can extract assets in a sign-and-trade.
Agreed…
I don’t think they wanted to move both and rebuild around Barnes… IQ and RJ could be the right spices to add to the Spicy P mix…
Toronto should try to win until the Deadline. Trent is who you trade for a big. My
Siakam is a good player, but he’s got some fit issues with certain teams. I like what he brings to the table, and he’d be great for teams like the Cavs, Sixers, and Kings. None of those teams want to pay a premium to get him, though, and the Raptors won’t give him up for less because he has stated that he’s willing to sign an extension with them instead.
Toronto just got two starters for one. Let’s see how the new chemistry works before more moves … for both Toronto and New York. Both won with their new players last night.
Siakam por Irving estaria bien los dos equipos ganarian
For the love of god the Celtics aren’t in the central
I think the issues with Siakam go beyond his being a rental. To, namely, the reasons why he’s (still) a rental, i.e., hasn’t been extended. Unlike OG, Siakam is not in line for a better salary by waiting to become a UFA, as he’s already making max and could have been extended at the current max. This is what occurs with almost all prime age max guys, and it occurs whether or not their teams plan to make them available for trade.
The NYK are taking a significant risk with OG, regardless of who his agent is. But at least there isn’t currently a valuation dispute that’s preventing an extension.
2 FRP, 1 Pick Swap, 2 Seconds, and salary. Minimum, that’s the Harden trade. Can’t shoot 3s though, which is why I wouldn’t max him, hes not a complete player. Honestly, hes in the DeRozan boat. If he would accept 4/120 or 5/150, that would be fair for what he provides as a No 2.
