JANUARY 31: The NBA and the NBPA have now finalized plans for a two-day draft this June, reports Wojnarowski (via Twitter).
According to Woj (Twitter links), the first day of the draft will take place in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on June 26, while the second day will be held at ESPN’s Seaport studios in Manhattan on June 27. The time limit for first-round picks will remain at five minutes, but teams will be given four minutes (instead of two) to make second-round selections.
JANUARY 11: It still needs final approval from the National Basketball Players Association, but the NBA is planning to make this year’s draft a two-day event, held June 26 and 27 in Brooklyn, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The first day of the draft would conclude when the first round does, with the second day covering the second round. According to Wojnarowski, the NBA and the NBPA have had regular discussions about the plan.
In addition to more television air time, the NBA and its teams believe that having more time between the first and second rounds will allow for more trades and better planning, Wojnarowski writes, with teams “frustrated by the chaotic speed of the second round.” NBA teams currently have two minutes to make a second-round pick, versus five minutes for each first-round selection.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reported in November that the NBA was considering making the draft a two-day event, with commissioner Adam Silver later confirming the league wanted to make the switch as soon as 2024.
Horrible decision.
Nobody really cares about second round of the draft.
I care about the second round
Enough to commit a whole day 3+ hours to it?
No one’s interesting in next season draft
The NBA teams care about the second round, otherwise they wouldn’t be moving to make this change. As a TV show, it leaves something to be desired for the average fan. But it is actually its own viable entity, a valuable entity to teams, apart from being a piece of television inventory.
What percent of 2nd round picks last 4+ years in the nba?
What percent of 2nd round picks achieve all nba or even all star caliber?
There is a severe lack of talent in the 2nd round especially as teams get into the 40s.
You will find some gems but committing a special day to 2nd round of the nba draft is a failure waiting to happen ratings wise.
NFL at least can say hey we’ve found some rising stars in 2nd/3rd rounds
This past draft LaPorta, Reed, Rice, Mims were 2nd round
2022 had Hall, Cook, Walker, McBride,
Its not all about ratings and TV this decision. Also about more time for trades and picking the players.
And it could also be good for TV.
While now many people stop watching after the first round, maybe then you will then get a studio show that reviews all the trades.
And the second day you will get more trades also, which makes is interesting for the fans. Combine it with interviews of the first round and you could still turn it into something interesting.
Big names are hardly moved during 2nd round. As those picks especially after 40 aren’t as valuable.
It sure is all about ratings. And commercial deals and all that comes with it. Nobody watches it it’s gonna revert back to one day.
add Vince Williams to the 2022 list. he just signed a 3 year guarantee. and everyone knows there are famous 2nd rounders. A two time MVP come to mind?
There’s more draft and stash guys taken in the 2nd round than there are nba caliber players who are gonna last 4+ years taken in the 2nd round.
Great. We’ve got one 2nd round pick who’s become mvp in 50+ years of drafting.
“Draft-and-stash guys” and “NBA-caliber players” aren’t mutually exclusive. Jokic was a draft-and-stash guy!
BTW, here’s a sampling of the players who were selected in the second round of the 2018 draft (it was probably stronger than most, but it happened to be the first one I looked at, since I was curious to see how many guys from 4+ years ago were still in the league):
Jevon Carter, Jalen Brunson, Devonte’ Graham, Mitchell Robinson, Gary Trent Jr., Jarred Vanderbilt, Bruce Brown, Hamidou Diallo, De’Anthony Melton, Svi Mykhailiuk, Keita Bates-Diop, Chimezie Metu, Shake Milton
Tony Kukoc, Marc Gasol, Manu Genobili, Paul Millsap, Mark Price, Maurice Cheeks, Draymond Green, Nikola Jokic, Jeff Hornack,
Rotation players matter…I don’t understand how that is so hard to comprehend for people that supposedly watch the sport, besides the fact that the people that talk about it on TV act the same way
Nba idea could work out.
Its definitely Not for me.
I have noticed that many fans spend an absurd time pondering/debating who the last bench guy should be. In the NFL, who the 3rd backup should be. As opposed to little discussion about the backup, but the 3rd backup.
Not learn the rules of MLB, but discuss what if rules, that could happen once every hundred years.
Who will be our 3rd catcher?
I think there is a segment of fans that (imo) identify or relate to the outlier, the 1% chance. The 2nd rounders. And want to follow the what if. Especially if nba hypes up the 2nd rounders.
You are wrong, it isn’t about second round picks it is about television time, about teams will have more time to elaborate trades, about teams can take more time to select a player and not doing in a rush with only three minutes in between after all I think is a GREAT IDEA to have a two days draft.
Reeks of desperation
so are they adding a 3rd round of the draft
Unfortunately no
Well, everything is content now…nothing is real anymore. Everything is all fake bs garbage nowadays, and sports no longer exist in the same way. Nobody cares about history, od the game itself; its all about more content and fake narratives and more social.media propaganda..
In what universe does this make any sense? How does this improve anything? How does this contribute to the anything besides a money grab? They just do things to do them now, and in a year or 2, there are going to be games on different streaming platforms, and then that’s when it really gets wonky.
I don’t know why they took sports away from people that have loved it, followed it, paid for it, etc, but it seems as though my burnout will only get worse moving forward, and I’ll likely never be able to look at any of it the same way ever again. I’m sure all the clown talking heads will spend the next 3 years telling everyone how great this is ad nauseum, even though, much like the in season tournament that makes no sense, it has zero benefit for fans in any way whatsoever
I’m sure at some point, we’ll see 40 minute games instead of 48 minutes, and other things along those lines…anything to ruin the experience for people that actually love sports, and “attract” the social media viewers to watch 7 second clips they don’t care about
How about just treating the 2nd round the way it should be, regardless of this? Most of the people that talk about the game act as though anyone not named a specific few players can’t play, and are shocked when they contribute.
It seems silly to do that unless you’re bringing back the third round to mirror the NFL Draft’s first two days. The third round would mainly be for two-way players especially since teams get three now.
Whomever thought this was a good idea needs to get out more…
The draft took too long already…
Go back to the early 70’s and 17 rounds. Make a 2-1/2 week show out of it.
Carl Lewis: best 208th pick ever.
It’s 2 rounds. Should be over entirely in 3-4 hours tops. Honestly, outside of top 10 or so, it’s not even worth televising.
Should’ve made it lottery on one day and da rest on day 2
Background noise, but they don’t need a 2nd day. The coverage isn’t good enough, most of the guys are 1 and done or unknown. I guess they want to try and tell their story and make fans care, but I’m good.
I like it. Both rounds in one night made for a too long and boring TV. Now the first night can be shorter and the 2nd optional viewing for draft freaks. Meanwhile the teams have more time to wheel and deal
Totally agree
I have a good idea. Why not change the draft lottery to a tournament. Make it like that terrible in-season tournament. The winner gets the 1st overall pick, 1 million dollars, trophies and medals. It will help fix the problems of the draft lottery
No player wants to play a game to draft his replacement
Should of done this 10 years ago
This is a blatant cash grab. NO ONE is tuning in for Day 2. Most tune out after the 1st rd anyway
I’m going to miss hall of famers being drafted during taco bell commercials
I enjoy watching the 2nd round of the draft, especially when a sure 1st rounder falls down to the second round. Some great players have been drafted in the second round. So if your prepared you might find a gem. I also appreciate the quickness of the rapid draft clock. The NBA should leave it as is and let the teams figure it out. It’s the job of the GM to be prepared for every pick. Waiting for a extra day to draft takes out the fun and guess work that makes it a enjoyable gameplay.
This is obviously an attempt to get something out of the 2nd round whilst keeping it on TV…
The focus is more about the teams getting more time for that 2nd round pick… They weren’t getting a longer prime time slot for the draft to be on one day with the extra time for 2nd round picks…
The NBA is hoping that some trades will make the broadcast more interesting for the 2nd round… Especially for the hosts who usually start repeating themselves around pick 25…
