The Pistons and Wizards pulled off a trade involving four players and two draft picks on Sunday. Expect a lot more activity in the coming weeks, according to Marc Stein in his latest Substack post.
Stein offers a number of interesting tidbits from around the league:
- Buddy Hield‘s name was prominently mentioned around the trade market after the veteran guard and the Pacers failed to reach an extension agreement during training camp. Sources tell Stein that Indiana continues to look for ways to move Hield. The Pacers are trying to package his expiring $18.6MM contract and a future first-rounder to get an impact player. Raptors forward Pascal Siakam continues to be talked about as a potential Pacers target. However, Indiana would be reluctant to give up second-year guard Bennedict Mathurin or rookie Jarace Walker in any trade.
- Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins is looked upon as another potential Pacers target but it may be difficult for Golden State to create a market for him, Stein writes. Wiggins not only has three more years left on his contract, his production has nosedived.
- Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale could be on the move. The Nets are listening to offers for both of those forwards and Stein suggests the Cavaliers should pursue O’Neale, considering they need a wing and he’s close friends with Donovan Mitchell. O’Neale has an expiring contract, while Finney-Smith is signed through 2025/26.
- Speaking of expiring contracts, the Magic are “exploring the trade market” the top pick of the 2017 draft. They’ve made guard Markelle Fultz and his $17MM expiring deal available, along with center Wendell Carter Jr, per Stein.
- Another team dangling expiring contracts is the Spurs. Forwards Doug McDermott and Cedi Osman are available for teams looking to clear cap room this summer or upgrade their second unit, according to Stein.
Last thing the Cavs need is Royce O”Neale
Heild or Keldon Johnson to NY for Evan Fournier and a 1st. Fultz to Utah for Horton-Tucker and a 2nd. Osman and McDermott for Marcus Morris (waived) and KJ Martin. Wendell Carter to OKC for Davis Bertans and a 1st.
McDermott to Knicks. Outside shooter and second Unit offense.
Utah won’t give a pick. Tht cheaper and better even if his out of the rotation. Not like they need to pay more and a pick for another non contributor.
Tht was very good his last 5 games but his teammates are better. Jazz depth really good
Those are not good trades for Orlando. Orlando has no need for picks at this point. They need veteran pg, and a shooter.
Fultz and Carter Jr to NOP for CJ and Liddel. MCW or DJ Augustin is available. Orlando has three young PGs. There are no minutes available.
I’m sure Luka would welcome DFS back with open arms
wiggins to portland. grant to gs. fultz & carter to portland. brogdan & the remains of williams to orlando. portland then has 3 former #1 picks.
Fournier and a heavy protected first for Hield.
Lol
Grimes and a second for Gafford
McDermott is the most obvious fit ever with LeBron in LA. They badly need shooting and hes a great shooter.
This seems so obvious. Don’t know why the Lakers continue to ignore trading for shooters even when they are available for peanuts
Grant for Wiggins??? Yes please
Warriors in a tight spot. As the article says, three more years and his production has nosedived.
He’s a negative asset at this point especially considering his reputation. Seems like the two great years were outlier compared to the seven crap years.
Chris Paul to Chicago for Vucevic and Carter
I guess I wouldn’t be surprised. Seems to be one of the very few 7-footers available. Not perfect but he’s an NBA player who produces.
Spurs trade Keldon Johnson please. Detroit trade Wiseman please
Carter to NO would be good. Fultz on the market is interesting. I don’t see Utah wanting him with George in the wings. The Heat would be a great place for him lowery and a 1st. Give Magic a vet fit. Dallas will make a move. Should be an interesting trade dead line.
DFS – if in fact BKN is making him available – is the only guy mentioned that might be worth giving up a FRP to acquire. Maybe teams are waiting to get closer to the deadline before making real assets available.
Sixers should be looking at Fultz …..
Carter should be on Mavs and Warriors radar.
Murray is going to Knicks ….. Thibs kind of player. Knicks are waiting out Hawks. Grimes would fit them. Then I can see Knicks getting Burkes after moving Grimes.
It would be funny getting fultz back. But if he could fill a role on the cheap, I’d take him and Wendell Carter Jr. Carter give you 4/5 depth.
I bet they can get either Buddy or McDermont in a sixer uniform. Buddy as a starter and Mc buckets off the bench.
Fultz can go Fultz himself. He’ll somehow be injured by the playoffs anyway. Can’t trade for a guy like that, at 17M no less.
Sixers need to target durable guys only tbh.
Fultz and Carter Jr to Miami for Lowry, Jovic and a 1st. Turn Jovic into a C. Waive Lowry
Fultz to Utah for Horton-Tucker, cash and a 2nd. Utah waives Juzang and signs Jaylen Martin
Fultz and Carter Jr to NO for Jonas (flip for cap space and draft picks) Larry Nance and Lewis with picks. Perfect for NO age group in starting lineup. Trade CJ and Lidell somewhere for expiring contracts and picks. PG. Fultz SG. Ingram SF. Jones PF. Zion C. Carter Jr. Murphy, Daniels and Hawkins sixth men
Evan Fournier and pick for Keldon Johnson
Wiseman to Memphis for Luke Kennard or Wiseman and Monte Morris to Memphis for Luke Kennard and Jake L
Thank you for acknowledging that Wiggins has nose-dived, even beyond the TWolves days.
SanFran beat writers and fans talk as if the rest of the NBA GMs are oblivious to this and expect a “haul” in return (I’m originally from the area)…
TonyinSingapore must be several weeks behind International Timeline. I guess you must be getting the news Johannesburg. I guess you must be a couple of months behind. But, everybody in America, knows about Kerr attempt play a Kuminga and Wiggins together. You are few months behind.
I would like to know who said that Wiggins will get a haul of players. From everything posted the warriors are just doing a money dump to get out of Wiggins deal. Some even claimed they will need to attach a 1st round pick to get rid of him.
First deal
Sixers: Andrew Wiggins
GSW: Nikki Vucevic and Danuel House
Chicago: Robert Covington, Paul Reed and Moses Moody
Sixers upgrade
GSW get the offensive minded 7 footer they are apparently seeking and a back up 3 and D wing
Chicago kicks off their rebuild with an expiring deal and 2 good young talents.
Second deal
Evan Fouriner, Malachi Flynn and a protected first for Doug McDermott and Devonte Graham
Knicks add some depth and impact off the bench. Fouriner and Flynn both were playing anyway but McDermott could earn minutes with his size and shooting ability, as could Graham challenging McBride as a back up point guard. Doesn’t affect their offseason plans as McDermotts expiring and Graham has a 2mil guarantee. So your giving up a protected first to be a better side and make a playoff run
Third deal
Zach LaVine for John Collins, THT and a first round pick
Utah add another high level scorer to help the spacing and take pressure off Lauri Markeneen. You dump John Collins, drop off THT and it only cost you a protected first round pick for the return of an all star level player. Chicago have to take back John Collins deal but it’s cheaper and shorter. THT returns back home to Chicago and if he plays well can be resigned otherwise it’s another expiring deal and you get back a first round pick aswell.
Chicago can then look to trade both AC and DeRozan and still field a decent enough team for the rest of the season.
White THT Craig Collins Drummond
Carter/Ayo Moody Phillips/RoCo Williams Reed
Wiggins AND Moody for Vucevic? Lol
Paul and a 2nd for Vucevic and Carter
Nobody wants Wiggins and nobody will take him in a trade unless the Warriors at least include Kuminga in the deal. Moody is a rotation player at best which is n0t enough to get a team to eat that Wiggins contract.
Hield, Nesmith /Mathurin, Toppin with picks for Siakam.
Trading Markelle would be a big mistake for Orlando but I can see why they would want to do that. He would be a godsend for the Pelicans who desperately needs a player that can pass the ball. Utah would be a nice fit too.
Fultz and Carter Jr to NOP for CJ and Liddel
Trent Jr, Koloko and two 2nd round picks for Wendal Carter Jr & Okeke
