The Cavaliers continue to convey that they have zero interest in considering the possibility of a Donovan Mitchell trade this season, Marc Stein writes in his latest Substack article. That stance has been reported by several NBA insiders in recent weeks and remains unchanged with the February 8 deadline just over four weeks away.
As Stein notes, the Cavaliers weren’t interested in the idea of a Mitchell trade when Darius Garland and Evan Mobley first went down with injuries, and team officials have been “emboldened” by the 8-3 run Cleveland has gone on with those two starters out. Center Jarrett Allen, in particular, has been playing some of his best basketball ever, quieting speculation that he might be an in-season trade candidate.
Stein suggests that “pessimism persists” about the Cavaliers’ chances of signing Mitchell to a new contract beyond his current deal, which expires in 2025. However, he doesn’t clarify who exactly is expressing that pessimism, which suggests it’s probably coming from sources outside of the organization and outside of Mitchell’s camp rather than from anyone directly involved in the situation.
Here are a few more items of interest from Stein’s latest story:
- While the Cavaliers aren’t listening to inquiries for now, the Heat continue to have legitimate interest in Mitchell and could attempt to test Cleveland’s resolve either in the coming weeks or in the 2024 offseason, Stein says. The Knicks and Nets have been frequently mentioned as suitors for Mitchell over the years, but executives from rival front offices view Miami as the top team to watch if the Cavs star becomes available, according to Stein.
- With no desire to move any of their core players, the Cavaliers are more interested in being a buyer at the trade deadline. Chris Haynes mentioned during a recent episode of the #thisleague UNCUT podcast that Cleveland is in the market for a three-and-D wing, and Stein says he’s heard the same thing. The Cavs’ trade assets are limited, however, as they can’t currently move any of their future first-round picks.
- The Knicks‘ success since the OG Anunoby gives the team some leverage to remain patient on the trade market in the short term, Stein says, suggesting that New York may focus on smaller moves to improve its depth this season and look to do something bigger in the summer.
I love the OG move however I must admit giving up both RJ and IQ hurts. IMO I was hoping RJ and Fournier and some first round picks. Unfortunately IQ probably wasn’t going to stay and be a back up. Calling out all Knicks fans what are your thoughts for the next move. I love Spida but not sure a small back court could work. I don’t want to trade all the assets for Dejante either. What are the chances of possibly getting someone in the buy out market? Does anyone think they are now a desired destination? Or still a few years away from that. Let’s Go Knicks tomorrow night!!!!! HUGE GAME AGAINST DALLAS.
I don’t know why people are worried about a small backcourt…Jalen Brunson has been taking a bunch of criticism for being too small but all he does is kill on the court…if we are talking about Mitchell in the off-season for next year OG and Mitch should be able to cover any defensive shortcomings of that back court
Knicks are ready now to contend with another major move imo. Mitch going down has kind of messed this up. But we can all see how our two headed Center was working now. With Hartenstein balling.
The only two players I can see them getting by TD. That can get us into contention. Is DeM or Murray. And also getting another center for the playoffs. Mitch will be back next yr. I just rather have insurance for this yr.
Looking at Thibs and Rose. I’d have to say Murray is the guy they would want. Other than that. They could make a minor move just for the playoffs this yr. Add depth to bench ….. Then wait till next yr to see who’s available. This FO and coach have been methodical about moves. So they probably wait if they don’t like what’s out there. Including teams asking for too much from Knicks.
Stein gets to write two stories, the first by suggesting nonsense, and the second by calling it out as nonsense.
CLE is “all in” with Mitchell, long term, that’s kind of a fact when a team does an asset depletion trade that leaves it with no tradable FRPs. So, yes, they aren’t likely to be shopping Mitchell, even if they have some injuries. Not back then, and not now. Glad Stein was all over it.
NYK dealt 2 rotations players for 1 in the Anunoby trade, with the obvious and stated idea of easing the minutes crunch among its perimeter rotation players. That trade was not, and was never going to be, the start of the trade spree. Not 5 games ago, not now.
I don’t see Cavs moving DM after all they gave up for him. We must understand that Garland and Mobley are young players. Okoro is the guy they need to start playing, he is also young. LeVert and Strus are the vets who have to step up now. Healthy Cavs team is very good imo. Still have to prove it. Cavs healthy can beat anyone in the playoffs. Donovan is not leaving this.
With the success the Cavs have been having with Mitchell and Allen I could see them looking to possibly trade Garland but it would take quite the package.
Why deal Garland?
There’s no reason for the Cavs to trade Spida in season when they want a good playoff run and stuff. Sure if the get bounced in the first round then I’m sure they will be listening to all sorts of offers on all sorts of players but mid season no way they switch it up for no reason.
Personally I think Spida is better than Garland and Mobley is better than Allen so I’d be more interested in building around those two and then trying to add a third to them but hey what do I know. The idea of Miami wanting Spida makes sense tho, they’ve wanted him forever and an offer of Herro and picks makes sense if Cleveland want to save a little money and grab a bunch of picks.
Why is it never mentioned they have his bird rights so even if he wanted to go to NY they could give him the most money and still proceed to do a sign and trade
Because this idea to keep stars in their original markets backfired on the owners, now they push their way out of small markets a year earlier so they can get paid supermax.
I know it won’t happen but I’d love Jarrett Allen on the Kings.
