As a veteran on a rebuilding team, Jerami Grant seems like an obvious candidate to be moved before the trade deadline, but neither he nor the Trail Blazers are eager for a separation, writes Sean Highkin of The Rose Garden Report.
In the wake of Wednesday’s Pascal Siakam trade, teams that missed out on Siakam may now turn their attention to Grant, a 29-year-old forward with similar offensive skills. But after Wednesday’s win over Brooklyn, Grant told Highkin that he’s happy where he is after signing a five-year, $160MM contract last summer.
“You definitely see it,” Grant said of trade rumors. “But it’s not anything in my control. I’m cool here. I’m good with what I’m doing. Keep my head down and keep working, keep trying to help the young guys as much as I can. But it’s definitely something you see. It’s not something you can do anything about, especially since I just signed a deal. I’m here for as long as they want me.”
Rather than fully committing to a youth movement, Blazers management wants to keep some veterans around to guide the young talent, Highkin adds. He states that general manager Joe Cronin doesn’t want a situation similar to the one in Detroit, where a lack of that type of leadership has contributed to a 4-37 record. Cronin would prefer to emulate Houston, which added four veterans in free agency last summer and is contending for a play-in spot.
There are more trade rumors to pass along:
- The Nets, who need to find a point guard that can score, appear to have interest in the Hawks‘ Dejounte Murray, per Ian Begley of SNY.tv, who adds that Brooklyn and Atlanta discussed a deal involving Murray and Spencer Dinwiddie earlier this season. Dinwiddie is viewed as the most likely Brooklyn player to be moved, and sources tell Brian Lewis of The New York Post that several teams called about him last season.
- The Knicks would have interest in Bruce Brown if the Raptors decide to move him after acquiring him yesterday in the Siakam deal, Begley states (video link). New York pursued Brown in free agency before being outbid by Indiana, and Begley notes that he would replace some of the play-making and perimeter defense the Knicks lost when they traded RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley last month.
- The Knicks are also looking to trade Quentin Grimes, who has been frustrated by limited playing time all season, sources tell Stefan Bondy of The New York Post (subscription required).
- During a SportsCenter appearance (video link), ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said a Lakers trade involving Bulls guard Zach LaVine is “not happening.” He adds that L.A. is seeking point guard help and identifies Tyus Jones from the Wizards and Collin Sexton from the Jazz as possible targets.
Bruce for Olynyx and Agbaji
Bruce Brown + the worst of the Raps 2024 picks for the NYK 2025 pick + whatever salary filler.
Raps need a quality power forward.
Raps need a prospect version of OG who can on ball the other teams best scorer and be a decent shooter.
Isnt that what RJ Barrett is?
Wendal Carter Jr or Jonathan Issac sound good.
Raps can figure that out later, this team isn’t competing this year. If we trade one of those 2024 picks and Brown for the KNK 25 FRP, it gives the Raps 2 FRP each year until 26 less whenever the Spurs pick qualifies
Is there a world where Brown goes to the Knicks, Grimes goes to the Pistons and Toronto gets Ivey? Other pieces, picks to be involved. Would love to hear from everyone.
No there is not.
Three team deal?
Knicks: Bruce Brown, OPJ
Pistons: Grimes, Boucher, Fournier, Knicks 1st, Tor 2nd
Raptors: Ivey, Wiseman
Pistons will have roster space after trading Bogs/vets.
Boucher stays though
there is such a world but it is NOT Earth.
I dont see why the Jazz would trade Sexton, he has been playing really well for them and they have been winning with him. If I am the Jazz I would rather move Clarkson.
As a Jazz fan, I don’t seem them trading Sexton
I don’t see them trading either. The team is clicking right now and both are major contributors. Sexton is a great value on his contract and Clarkson is very popular with the fans.
So trade Grant and get back a veteran with some pedigree. Do these gms not watch what happens around the league? Bulls can’t even give lavine away. Good thing he has lots of league experience though…
So who exactly would you suggest the Blazers trade Grant for who is a veteran with some pedigree??? Whatever that means? And what exactly is the logic to trade Grant, a veteran with some pedigree, for another veteran with some pedigree?
Are we making trades just to make trades now?
The logic is that if all you care about is the fact that someone has accrued years in the league, there are cheaper options.
What has Jerami Grant done exactly that makes his experience so much more valuable than say, Grant Williams, who has played in twice as many playoff games?
By the time the blazers have a viable team Grant will be past his prime, so you might as well get value while you can.
Anything else you need me to break down for you?
Bruce Brown and a second for Evan Fouriner, Quentin Grimes and a protected first ???
Na
Which side says no? I’m assuming the raps? Fournier is a negative asset, whereas Brown will be highly coveted.
It’ll be hard for the Knicks to move Fournier without any deal sweeteners (i.e 1st rounder)
Fournier is a space filler for salary cap matching purposes. He not only has an expiring contract, but the Knicks have a team option on him for 2025; if they don’t use him in a trade this year, they can renew his contract and use him in a 2034-2025 deal. He’s actually quite valuable to make a trade happen, and the Knicks are not going to just dump him,
Yeah, that trade is essentially Grimes for Bruce Brown and a second, which nobody would do. Maybe if the first was likely to land in the lottery and was unprotected. And it was just Brown, no second included. Even then, I’d want a bit more sweetener if I were the Raptors. Bruce Brown is one of the most versatile sixth men in the league or an ideal glue-guy starter for any team that needs a 2-guard. Maybe a bit overpaid on a year to year basis, but as a pseudo-expiring deal (his contract has a team option), he’s super valuable in the right context.
While Fournier is a valuable piece for the Knicks as a salary match, he’s not for any team that acquires him, as he can’t be aggregated with other salaries once he gets moved for the first time. A protected first or interesting young player is the minimum needed to move him.
Trade Young, keep Murray, play defense a little, keep turnovers down.
Brown for Wiggins? Maybe Wiggs will give a damn playing in hometown Toronto
Grimes is a better asset than Brown by himself. I’m guessing 2k ratings don’t back that up, but it’s reality in the NBA nonetheless. NYK would have to really be down on Grimes, or him on them, to even consider that swap.
I also doubt any team offers up a FRP of any kind for Brown. Brown certainly has value, but it’s as a rental only. I can’t think of many rentals that netted a FRP, and when it’s happened it’s been a very low FRP in next coming draft.
So glad to hear that Levine to lakers isn’t happening.
Grant for Mathurin and Hield?
