In a wide-ranging look at the in-season trade market, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report examines the trade rumors surrounding Pascal Siakam, Dejounte Murray, Zach LaVine, Kyle Kuzma, and several other players and teams around the NBA.
Among Pincus’ most interesting tidbits? He hears that the Warriors are very high on rookie Brandin Podziemski and aren’t expected to move him, with one source advising that it’s safe to leave the guard out of “fake trades.”
Pincus also notes that while the Wizards have several intriguing trade candidates, including veteran guards Tyus Jones and Delon Wright, they’ve set a “greedy” asking price for center Daniel Gafford, who is on a multiyear contract. As Pincus explains, that’s not meant to be a shot at Washington — it’s simply a reflection of the fact that the team would need a significant return to part with its starting center, who is under team control through 2025/26.
Here are a few more trade-related rumors and notes from across the league:
- Brian Lewis of The New York Post believes there’s a good chance that at least one, if not two, of the Nets‘ three oldest players – Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Royce O’Neale – will be on the move ahead of the February 8 trade deadline. However, echoing a recent Adrian Wojnarowski report, Lewis stresses that there are no plans to deal forward Mikal Bridges, who remains a crucial part of the team’s core.
- After a report last week suggested that the Heat could be a suitor for Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald digs into how plausible a trade between the two teams might be. According to Jackson, one person in contact with Miami’s front office expressed skepticism about the odds of the Heat aggressively pursuing Murray, but that source doesn’t know for sure what the team will do.
- Christian Clark of NOLA.com expects the Pelicans to explore the trade market in the hopes of adding a defensive-minded center capable of playing with the starters. As Clark explains, that would make the team more comfortable starting more offensively inclined players at other positions.
Gafford would be a great pickup for Tye Pelicans. Zac Collins is another they could look at trading for. Wendell Carter is available. We shall see!
Gafford has limitations on offense and is foul prone, but that defense alone is a game changer. It’s not obvious on a terrible Wizards team, but he’s a mega-hustle guy who can reliably protect the rim against pretty much anyone. It’s just that the rest of the team is so crap he gets overshadowed. Even with no help he’s a positive defender. He was always a game changer for the Wiz last year when they went big and moved Kristaps to PF and Kuz to SF.
So basically the warriors are afraid to make a move. Steph must be thrilled.
Because they don’t want to trade a promising rookie?
They’re likely to move Wiggins by the deadline.
They honestly kind of have to. The rules for over-the-cap teams take effect this offseason. If they going to make a move, it basically has to be this season.
On the other hand, given that they seem against trading all of TJD, Pod, Moody, and Kuminga, they don’t have much to offer.
There’s CP3’s expiring which has some value, but you’re right, they’re pretty much between a rock and a hard place. My guess is that most potential trade partners would want Moody or Kuminga, and also the rookies don’t move the needle salarywise.
Pacers are likely getting Siakam.
No reason to make a move when the team is not that good this year. Curry hasn’t looked very good this year so he is part of the problem. They should trade some of the vets for younger pieces.
They should sell and get ready for next year. Let kumina, moody, jackson and podziemski play a lot. Sell off cp3, wiggins, looney, gp and saric. Hope klay signs for a lot less than he makes now if not let him go. He still can get hot but overall is too limited in other areas. Try and retool for next year. Get a athletic center and a wing or two that defends.
With Saric low pay the warriors probably could get a 2nd rounder for him from a contending team. problem with CP3 is can they get back expiring contracts in a trade. Wiggins is probably next year to get anything for him.
yes….you figured it out. they’re simply afraid.
lack of trade assets and salary cap makes it hard to trade. They need their young players and draft assets for the future.
I hear Spicy P Curry is the next Subway special…
This year he will have his dessert special Curry turnovers.
Ryan Rollins already stole that
Trade Chris Paul !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For what, an empty bag of chips?
That’s about his value but I believe there’s got to be a team out there that has a big man who’s not working out but on a 3-year or 4 year contract.
Perhaps it would be beneficial for that team to take on Chris Paul’s expiring and unload that contract. Maybe it would be a guy the Warriors can use?
The only player who fits those criteria as far as I can tell is Deandre Ayton. Who has been really awful for Portland. Is getting rid of CP3 really worth the four years left on his deal? Maybe the Jazz would be willing to trade John Collins, at best?
That is the problem with CP3 the only reason they got him was to get rid of Poole’s bad contract. CP3 only has this year left so they have less of a tax burden for next year. So unless a expiring contract comes back or draft picks with a contract more than next year left warriors are stuck with him.
About the only guy they could get back who would have any value is Gordon Heyward. CP3’s contract this year isn’t fully guaranteed (in addition to next year’s non-guaranteed money), so if they buy him out or cut him, he won’t cost full value, whereas Heyward would. If they can’t find a taker they like, the Hornets could entertain that move.
Other than that, it’s a crapshoot.
Hayward = no value so useless to make that deal
He has more value than Chris Paul, lol.
Knicks making a so called smaller deal for bench. Wouldn’t mind adding Dinwiddie. He loves playing in MSG. Rather him than Clarkson, Claxton, Brogdon. Rozier is another I wouldn’t mind.
Siakam, Murray, DeM, Kuzma, Grant are the trades that can shake up the NBA. Those are the ones I’m most interested in. I don’t believe LaVine gets moved this yr.
