Appearing on NBA Today on Friday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Hawks are ready to deal former All-Star guard Dejounte Murray (Twitter link).
“Atlanta is ready to trade Dejounte Murray,” Wojnarowski said. “They have given some time to the Trae Young/Dejounte Murray backcourt; I think they’re ready to move on from it.
“Dejounte Murray is the player that they’re engaged around the league with. And they’ve talked to the Lakers, they’ve exchanged some ideas on a potential trade. But they’re engaged with a lot of teams.
“They gave up a lot for Dejounte Murray: two of their own first-round picks, a pick swap, and a third first-round pick that they had control of. They want to get some value back for him.
“So you look at that Lakers roster, and you see what of value do they have that can compete in the marketplace? I think there’s lots of teams interested in him, the question is, how much are they willing to give up for Murray?”
Wojnarowski went on to explain that since the trade deadline is still about a month away, the Hawks may not be getting top offers yet. The Lakers will likely remain in the hunt for Murray, according to Wojnarowski, who concluded by saying, “I do think the chances of him being moved before the deadline are very, very high.”
Murray makes $18.2MM in 2023/24, which is the final season of his rookie scale extension. He signed a four-year, $111MM+ veteran contract extension in the summer (it starts next season), which is viewed as fairly team-friendly. His contract does also include a significant trade bonus that would come into effect if he’s dealt this season, as Bobby Marks of ESPN notes (via Twitter).
Murray was first mentioned as a possible trade candidate this season a few weeks ago, when he was linked to the Knicks. Subsequent reports from multiple outlets have connected him to various teams, with Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reporting on Thursday that Murray is looking like the most likely All-Star-caliber player to be moved prior to the deadline.
Wojnarowski has been reporting for a while that the Hawks are “absolutely open for business,” particularly on Murray, so his latest update isn’t exactly surprising. Still, the fact that he was so confident about the odds of a trade makes it seem as though it’s only matter of when, not if at this point.
Let’s all please try to remember 2 important things, 1. that these reporters have been wrong numerous times before and 2. that it makes little to no sense for the Hawks to trade Dejounte
Yeah and the Hawks never do things that make little sense.
Woj has a pretty good batting avg, and it behooves ATL to use him as a vessel as a negotiation tactic
I mean if they are even considering a (weak) Laker deal they need all Wojs help they can get at this point
Let’s also remember a 3rd, equally important point, 3. they need to generate stories like this to get the clicks/eyeballs that they need to survive
3 Rebuttal- There’s gotta be a healthy set of desiring eyeballs for such site to exist
They aren’t generating, they are just following a healthy market
Another thing is guys like Woj and Shams are leaking rumors with a motive a lot of the time. If Shams leaks something on a Klutch Sports client there is a good chance he is saying what they want him to say as a trade for other information.
It’s kind of irrelevant whether Woj said it or not. The fact of the matter is Atlanta is awful and Murray and Trae haven’t worked out. Don’t have to be Woj of Shams to know Atlanta is looking at trades.
did you hear about the elephant that nobody cared about? he was irrelephant
Woj is more than an insider though
And let’s remember how much sense you make. Too much smoke here.
I’d say Heat is best place for him. Just wonder if they would trade him in own division. Or even conference.
Sixers, Heat, Lakers should be all over this. Hawks won’t move to him to MSG unless it’s an overpay. Heat makes most sense to me.
I’m curious what the Knicks interest really is in him and I’m not sure myself about the fit. I think the fit would be better with Brunson than Trae Young, but it’s hard to know. What makes you think they would only trade him to the Knicks for an overpay? They are not division rivals or anything.
Thibs kind of player and age. I think he can work with Brunson. Brunson is no big ast guy. Everyone wants more from Knicks.
Well Knicks have more assets than the Lakers, Sixers, and Heat. If I’m the Knicks, I’d make the move for him.
I just saw this in Hoopshype …..
NBA insiders said the Hawks, in their discussions with the Knicks, talked about a Dejounte Murray trade with Atlanta seeking Immanuel Quickley and a first-round pick.

Has to be more than this just so the money matches. But for this ….. I definitely would have done it. Still could have gotten OG with picks. Can’t believe they didn’t do this.
But I do love OG !!!!!!
It makes sense for the right return. He and Trae have had 1.5 seasons to mesh and it hasn’t happened.
Trae Is like Dame all O no D. You need D to win. Atl is doomed to continue to lose with Trae.
They overpaid for him and now should start a full rebuild.
Just never got out of their first rebuild though, they had like 1/2 decent seasons in the last 10 years
Why they hired Nate McMillan who hates young players to coach a young team is a true mystery. He’s a horrible coach on top of the young players thing.
Atl still regrets not getting Doncic instead. Poor Atlanta.
Everyone but you has moved on from the 2018 draft – coming from a Kings fan
So trade him.
Someone might overpay them, since his contract is known, and he isn’t washed or overpaid on that contract.
Lakers have nothing of value to offer as a package. Murray on the Pelicans would be a good fit IMO and the Pelicans have a lot of intriguing pieces to put in a trade.
Hawks botched a lot of picks and young talent…quite amazing how poorly ran they are.
And so it goes on ……. and on
Hawks lose by 18 to Pacers with no Hali.
Murray with 29 pts ……..
“Get me out of here”
Murray wants out, Trae has 0 trade value, Snyder is thing why did I ever take this job!
Dejounte, 21-5-4.5 shooting at 47-39-81, former all defensive second team player and recently resigned to a respectable 4 year 114mil deal.
Averages a starch over 20, good defensively, rebounds and make plays, while secured to a long term reasonable deal. Why not try to keep him and trade Trae Young? He hasn’t done enough as the leader of this team for a couple years. He’s the closest thing to Steph Curry and I’m sure plenty of team would love to have him.
Trae and Hunter to Miami for Herro, Lowry and 2 firsts.
Recover back some first round picks, clear cap space and fill the hole in the backcourt. Herro provides that same scoring threat as Trae but is better defensively, on a much more team friendly deal and with Lowrys expiring deal it allows you to potentially spend up in FA. Miami creates a big 3 and gets the star it’s been looking for in Trae and Hunter is also a good addition in the forwards.
The fact Trae can’t play defense is the exact reason why Miami wouldn’t trade for him. Miami would rather have Dejonte over Trae.
Trae doesn’t fit the Heat Culture at all
The last two “superstars” they were interested in were high volume shooters that didn’t play defence in Donovan Mitchell and Bradley Beal so I beg to differ. Miami as a team will play good defence even if they had Trae cause you’ve got the likes of Jimmy and Bam with Spol coaching.
As for Heat Culture, I actually think Trae does fit that somewhat. He’s hard working, he’s an underdog, he steps up in the clutch, he’s got that dawg in him a little and I think in that environment with such strong leaders around him they’d be able to develop him more. ATL has had a revolving door of head coaches, no veterans, no locker room leaders, and Trae hasn’t had any help or guidance in that area.
Murray in Miami would be serious man.
Atlanta don’t want injury prone Herro and old Lowry… -_-
Lowry is a huge expiring deal which clears money for you to spend in FA….
Herro is somewhat often injured but I wouldn’t go as far as saying injury prone just yet. He’s a great talent and solid player plus you’re also getting two first round picks.
And I mean what’s your alternative suggestion keep with Trae, switch out the headpcach again in a couple months and continue to stay an average team ….
Just for fun. 3 team trade. San Antonio waives Doug McDermott and Bassey. Atlanta trades Murray and Capela to Washington, Patty Mills to San Antonio. San Antonio trades Keldon Johnson, Devonte Graham and a less favorable 1st to Atlanta, Blake Wesley to Washington. Washington trades Gafford to Atlanta, Shamet, Galo, Bilal, Wright with a pick swap to San Antonio. (San Antonio can waive if they want Galo and sign Doug back) I hope I did that right
Nevermind about this one.
3 team trade. Atlanta trades Murray and Capela to Miami, patty Mills to San Antonio. Miami trades Lowry, Jamie J, and jovic to San Antonio, a 1st to Atlanta. San Antonio trades Blake Wesley to Miami, Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, Devonte Graham and a future 1st( least favorable) to Atlanta. San Antonio waives Lowry
Then at the draft San Antonio offers Detroit all their 1st to Detroit and Jovic for Cade Cunningham. Spurs lineup PG. Cunningham SG. Vassel SF. Jamie J PF. Sochan C. Wemby
They need to trade Trae, not DJM. Trae is not a playoff type player. Too easy to target on D because of his lack of size and physicality.

I think that the Hawks would trade Dejounte Murray only if there is any high first round pick involved in the trade otherwise I don’t think they are going to trade him.
I can see Portland as a possible fit as he’s from Seattle about 3 hours north. So if Atlanta really wants to get rid of him maybe a Sharpe and a future first could get it done. Portland is pretty bad this year so I doubt they want to give up a potential top 5 pick.
