The 2024 NBA All-Star reserves were announced on Thursday night, according to a release from the NBA (Twitter links). Below is a rundown of the 14 players set to join the previously announced starters in the All-Star Game set in Indianapolis on Feb. 18. All-Star reserves are selected by the league’s head coaches.
Eastern Conference Reserves:
- Guard: Jalen Brunson, Knicks
- Guard: Donovan Mitchell, Cavaliers
- Guard: Tyrese Maxey, Sixers
- Frontcourt: Bam Adebayo, Heat
- Frontcourt: Jaylen Brown, Celtics
- Frontcourt: Julius Randle, Knicks
- Frontcourt: Paolo Banchero, Magic
Maxey, Brunson and Banchero are first-time All-Stars. Brunson was a strong contender for a starting guard spot in the Eastern Conference, a spot that ultimately went to Bucks guard Damian Lillard. Mitchell (five), Brown (three), Adebayo (three), and Randle (three) are all multi-time selections.
As observed by ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Twitter link), Randle earns a $1.3MM bonus by making the All-Star Game. Though with the Knicks forward set to miss extended time, it’s likely the NBA will name an injury replacement player. Injury replacements are named by commissioner Adam Silver.
If Brown plays in 65 games by the end of the year, he’ll receive a $1.7MM bonus for his All-Star nod, according to Marks, who adds that Celtics guard Jrue Holiday had a $348K All-Star bonus that is now deemed unlikely.
Hawks guard Trae Young, Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen, Boston’s Holiday, Derrick White and Kristaps Porzingis, Raptors forward Scottie Barnes, Magic forward Franz Wagner, Bulls guard Coby White, Pacers center Myles Turner and Heat forward Jimmy Butler are among players who had cases to make the game but didn’t.
Western Conference Reserves:
- Guard: Stephen Curry, Warriors
- Guard: Anthony Edwards, Timberwolves
- Guard: Devin Booker, Suns
- Frontcourt: Paul George, Clippers
- Frontcourt: Kawhi Leonard, Clippers
- Frontcourt: Karl-Anthony Towns, Timberwolves
- Frontcourt: Anthony Davis, Lakers
Every player among the Western Conference’s reserves is now a multi-time All-Star. This is Curry’s 10th All-Star appearance, leading the group. George and Davis will be making their ninth appearances. Booker (four), Edwards (tw0), Towns (four) and Leonard (six) round out the list.
Having not been selected to the All-Star Game, Kings forward Domantas Sabonis will miss out on a $1.3MM bonus, according to Marks (Twitter link). Sabonis would regain that bonus if he’s named as an injury replacement, but none of the 12 Western All-Stars appear in danger of missing the game at this point.
Nuggets guard Jamal Murray, Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox and Sabonis, Rockets center Alperen Sengun, Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, Wolves center Rudy Gobert, Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, New Orleans forwards Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, Clippers guard James Harden and Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen are among those who missed the cut in the West.
West
No fox and Sabonis
With losing record, Lakers have 2 all stars
East
No Porzingis, no Holiday, no White
So your point is that 5 of the 12 players for the East should be Celtics?
Lmfao
All star criteria:
One part current performance
One part popularity
One part legacy
Gotta have have least two for consideration
Allen should replace Randle who will be out
Could happen as this team has no backup center. Bizarre when you consider that Embiid isn’t looking all that healthy either. Allen or Porzyngis or both could be replacement picks.
Randle should not have been named as a reserve. He was horrible the first couple weeks of the season. His rebounding and assists have dipped a bit, and has been “off” just as much as he has been on this year.
Celtics have a case to have a 3rd guy. They are one of the only teams actually playing regular season games at the level and consistency you expect from professional basketball players.
Franz Wagner has been better than Julius Randle all season long.
That is …. The Celtics had consistently performed until tonight against the Lakers without LeBron and AD.
Randle is averaging 24/9/5 on .472/.311/.781 with 18.6 PER, .119 WS/48, and 1.5 VORP on the 3rd best team in the East.
Wagner is averaging 20/6/4 on .467/.313/.855 with 17.3 PER, .120 WS/48, and 1.1 VORP on the 8 seed in the East.
It’s close and I’m biased but I don’t see how you can make the argument that Wagner has been better. At best, they’re pretty neck-and-neck.
Sengun robbed
Yup, are you surprised?
No Tingis Pingus? No Fox, Sabonis? What a joke!
There are only 7 spots for reserves. They might make it as a replacement for someone injured. It sounds like people on here want like 40 all stars. Name everyone an All-star, hand out participation trophies and call it a game. Jeez
Fox being snubbed is crazy
I agree Fox has been phenomenal this season but so have Edwards and Booker and Curry is one of the faces of the NBA.
Fox has passed Curry in impact level for an obviously much better team (at least to this point of the season) but yeah the league is promoting that goofy shooting competition of Curry against a woman with a smaller ball at a closer distance so they put him there even though he doesn’t deserve it this season. Also Gobert has easily been the Twolves second most impactful player and should’ve been there over Towns but it’s not cool to promote defense either.
Shhh don’t let the Warriors fans hear you! They’re waiting to cry about something!
Curry is better than Fox. We all saw what happened in the playoffs.
No he isn’t. Curry has been carrying the Warriors all season.
You just said Fox is on a better team. That alone makes your argument null and void.
Curry>Fox and its not even close. We all saw what happened the last time they faced each other in the playoffs.
Curry has more points than Fox. Curry leads the league in most 3 pointers made and highest free throw percentage. And he’s averaging more points than Fox.
So, Curry>Fox and its not even close.
You mean Curry was better than Fox in the playoffs when Fox was playing with a broken finger on his shooting hand? Yes, I agree Curry is better than Fox when Fox has a broken finger – otherwise not so much (and that series still took the Warriors 7 games anyways). Curry has been carrying the Warriors this season and they completely fell apart when CP3 got hurt while Draymond was suspended so he hasn’t shown the same ability to carry the team effectively in regards to playing winning basketball as in the past. Curry’s obviously had a better career but Fox is better now and is the reason Sabonis is having a career season numbers wise because opponents always focus their gameplan on stopping Fox because, like Curry, he is the engine that carries his team – and is doing a more effective job of it as the standings show. Curry is averaging 0.3 points more than Fox – that is essentially a wash as they’ve gone back and forth on scoring average. Fox, however, is a very strong on-ball defender and his defense is far superior to Curry who is a liability on that end which is part of why Fox’s overall impact has significantly eclipsed Curry and the predominant reason that his team has a better record – it’s very convenient for the casual fans to ignore that half of the game especially given how the league promotes itself, but defense obviously still plays a major role in wins and losses… I won’t use silly statements like “null and void”, just facts and statements of logic that show that your argument is incorrect.
Lol Fox was playing with a broken finger? Keep making excuses.
Curry is better than Fox. You haven’t provided any “facts and statements of logic”. Curry’s defense has imrpoved over the years. He was solid on defense in the 2022 finals. Curry is an above average defender.
Fox hasn’t done anything. Fox is a mediocre defender. His team had a better record last year and they still lost to the Warriors. And the reason Kings have a better season because they are a better overall team than the Warriors. Outside of Curry, nobody has been effective on Warriors. Fox is never winning a championship. Fox is not a generational player like Curry.
Comeback at me when Fox wins 2 MVPs, a finals MVP and 4 rings.
Curry>Fox and its not even close.
No one is debating that Curry hasn’t had the far better career – the fact that your response was based on career accomplishments implies that even you know you’re not correct on this one. Fox led the NBA in clutch time scoring last season (which is obviously not easy to do), opponents have adjusted this season by making him the focal point of their defensive gameplan (like what Curry sees), and he is still scoring the same as Curry this year. As you pointed out, Curry is elite at 3 point shooting and FT%, while Fox is a far superior attacker with his elite quickness and also superior in the midrange which is why their respective scoring averages are essentially the same. You are correct that Curry has improved defensively over the years and that has contributed to his championship success, but his starting point was as one of the worst defenders in the league who would always get hunted in pick and roll defense so improving to some degree was essentially inevitable. You still won’t ever see the Warriors having Curry intentionally guarding the opponent’s primary scoring option, something that Fox does in big spots depending on the matchup. Your statement that Fox is a mediocre defender is embarrassingly incorrect and shows that you are clearly unfamiliar with his game. He’s top 5 in the league in steals per game this season as well. Regardless of whether you want to call it an excuse or not, the series last season clearly changed after Fox broke his finger in Game 4. Fox brings a lot to the game besides just offense though which is why he kept playing albeit obviously not nearly at his normal impact level, while for instance if Curry broke a finger on his shooting hand, the Warriors probably wouldn’t even play him. But again this argument is about who has been a better and more impactful player this season – Fox’s finger isn’t broken anymore and his impact this season has clearly exceeded Curry. Don’t think anyone was saying that the Kings had a better supporting cast than the Warriors going into this season (I mean they didn’t beat them in the playoffs last year in case that hasn’t been acknowledged enough haha!). While the Warriors starters have struggled, their young players and bench have improved. The Kings are starting Kevin Huerter and Harrison Barnes and don’t have a particularly strong bench and you’re acting like they’re some sort of juggernaut in terms of supporting personnel… At the end of the day, you’re entitled to the view that ASG appearances should be tied to career accomplishments – obviously the fan voting reflects that preference as well, but my personal opinion is that the 12 most impactful players THAT season in each conference should be rewarded and Curry has not hit that marker this year and still only just barely so per the really strong guard pool in the West.
Curry is going to be 36 this year and the fact that hes still playing at such an elite level says a lot.
Fanboys love to bring out all the excuses in the world when their team loses. You are perfect example of that. Keep making excuses. Warriors won, Kings didn’t.
Warriors this season don’t have anyone who can score 20 points outside of Curry. Wiggins has fallen off, Thompson is inconsistent.
Kings have Sabonis, who is their primary playmaker. He leads the Kings in assists and is averaging 20 points. Thats already better than anyone not named Curry on the Warriors. Fox isn’t reason why Kings are doing better this year. Sabonis is.
Curry led the league in steals in 2015-16 season.
Fox hasn’t done that. Fox is a mediocre defender. Curry dropped 50 points on his head at last years playoffs.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is currently the steals leader. Fox is at 7th lol.
Curry was 27 when he won the league MVP and a championship.
Fox is nearly that age and hes far from accomplishing that. I doubt he’ll ever win an MVP or a championship.
The fact that Curry is an all star this year and Fox isn’t, shows that majority of people agree with me.
Keep crying about it.
Dude, Curry is amazing. At 36, he still is special. And in the East, I’d have him as an all-star this season. But you’re clearly reading what you want regarding my perspective and not specifically what I’m saying – maybe ask some intelligent non-Warrior fan friends and/or acquaintances of yours to read our exchange or just re-read it yourself and you might get a different view especially in regards to if I’m using any facts or logic based statements. I’m not a Kings fan and couldn’t care less who won the series last year between them and the Warriors – just been discussing the relevant aspects of it to this argument. FYI I was accused of being a Rockets fan the other week based on a different argument.
No Sabonis is an absolute joke. The NBA loses more credibility every day. Keep losing those ratings, Adam silver. You’re doing great.
I couldn’t agree more. No Sabonis is a joke. An absolute joke!
Who’s going to draw more ratings? Domantas Sabonis or Anthony Davis? Towns, Leonard and George all deserve their spots.
That’s the problem. The game has chosen to be entertainment rather than a sport. And judging by the ratings, fans aren’t tuning in.
@mahmoud is speaking Facts!
While I think AD is having an impressive season , no way he should have been chosen over Sabonis
No Sabonis, No Fox and Trae? That’s crazy!
Domantas Sabonis is currently averaging 19.9 Points, 13.0 Rebounds, and 8.0 Assists per game
Only 1 other player in NBA history has EVER finished a season with at least 19, 13, and 8: Wilt Chamberlain.
Not Jokic, not Embiid, not Bill Russell, not LeBron
Just Sabonis, and Wilt.
Yep. Disrespect towards Sacramento has been the norm for 2 decades. It won’t stop until they make noise in the playoffs. Coming into the year I remember 80% of people on here discounting Sabonis because of his play off performance. A series that started with a broken finger and ended with a Nike in his lungs. A series that was a Harrison Barnes 3 pointer away from a Sacramento conference finals appearance (yes the obviously beat the Lakers in that matchup). Fox’s biggest problem is how deep the pool in the West is. If you’re not top 5 MVP or cornerstone of the league you’re not making it
Wait, what a Nike in his lungs?
How did I miss this?! Lol
Someone should sign Tony Snell for a one year contract
Trae Young, Scottie Barnes & Jarrett Allen should be in the EC…
Meanwhile Lillard, Brown & Banchero have no business been there.
Lauri Markkanen, Domantas Sabonis & Alperen Sengun should be in the WC…
Meanwhile Edwards, PG13 & KAT should not be there.
Biggest snub easily goes to Sabonis, he should start, can’t believe he has been left out.
To substitute Randle & probably Embiid… Lillard & Siakam.
If anyone misses in the WC… Wembanyama & KAT would do nicely.
Fox absolutely robbed lol Booker PG13 and Towns over him???
Anthony Davis making it is comical, the Lakers are barely a play in team and have 2 all stars? Lol then they should have a better record.
Julius Randle is questionable, but the Knicks are having a good season so ok I guess. And he is hurt, so someone will take his spot regardless. It should be Scottie Barnes imo
I’m good with all stars ……
It’s deserving. Brunson only 2nd rd pick on team. 33rd by Dallas. Thank you Mr Cuban.
Randle won’t play …… probably give to Allen. They will need a big. I can see Trae getting too.
I’d say the team with the best record in the NBA should have a third All-Star. Kristaps Porzingis deserves it. Go Celtics!
