After appearing in 41 games for the Celtics last season, Blake Griffin hasn’t been on an NBA roster at all in 2023/24. However, if it were up to the Celtics’ players, Griffin would still be in Boston.
As Brian Robb of MassLive.com writes, guards Derrick White and Payton Pritchard said during an appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast that several Celtics players tried to get Griffin to sign with the team earlier in the ’23/24 league year.
“I think the whole team has been begging him to,” White said.
“I texted him actually a week ago or two jokingly being like, ‘Coming back for one last ride?'” Pritchard added. “He says he’s enjoying his life.”
According to Robb, multiple Celtics players reached out to Griffin during the team’s West Coast road trip in December to ask about a possible return. However, the six-time All-Star has opted to sit out this season to spend more time with his family, Robb writes.
“He told me at the end of last year that his family was the most important thing and I stopped talking to him about it,” Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said when asked on Monday about White’s and Pritchard’s comments about Griffin (Twitter link via Jared Weiss of The Athletic).
Here’s more from around the Atlantic:
- The Celtics have held the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Conference for all but six days this season and appear highly likely to keep the top spot the rest of the way, according to Jay King of The Athletic, who explores whether any conference rivals could realistically catch Boston. The Celtics have a 7.5-game lead on the No. 2 Cavaliers, with just 25 games left to play.
- With Joel Embiid unavailable and players in and out of the rotation this month due to injuries and trade-deadline moves, the Sixers have struggled to find a rhythm, losing nine of their past 13 games, writes Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer (subscription required). “There’s a lot of different combinations of guys,” head coach Nick Nurse said, “and we’re trying to make sure when we’re doing stuff that we can figure it out and get more on the same page. It’s just a bit disjointed at times when it gets tough.”
- While Gary Trent Jr.‘s 41.4% three-point percentage is excellent, his season as a whole has still felt like a bit of a letdown, according to Eric Koreen of The Athletic, who considers whether or not that assessment is fair and whether the Raptors will re-sign Trent, who is a free agent this summer. A multiyear offer worth somewhere between the mid-level exception and $20MM annually might be reasonable for the 25-year-old, Koreen suggests.
- Zulfi Sheikh of Sportsnet.ca identifies six storylines to watch for the Raptors down the stretch this season, including whether the team actually has a shot at a play-in berth and RJ Barrett‘s progress in his first few months with his new team.
Griffin reminds me of a guy who would feel cheated if he signed for just a ring he’d at least want to be with them the full season that’s y I don’t think he’ll sign now (obviously + his family too)
I think they don’t need anything more to help this season sign a young guy to get into their system their cap space is going to be small for at least 3-4 yr with Tatum and Brown full max new deals for Jrue, KP, and White
Tampering smdh
Blake Griffin’s career was a big disappointment. Why the Clippers gave him a max contract I’ll never know. He was super overrated.
Dude probably can’t sleep knowing FastEddie777 was disappointed.
Injuries derailed him relatively quickly but prime Blake was legit. Explosive finisher, v underrated passer, had a solid middle too. At the height of his clippers tenure he was hovering around ~6-7th best player in the league. Injuries btwn him and cp3 as well as untimely choking sapped all their playoff runs tho.
Also, after his first set of injuries, he managed to become a good 3pt shooter and keep his finishing touch around the rim. That one season in Detroit was honestly amazing to watch. He was genuinely around a top 10 player in the league for most of his peak years and was arguably better than that at his best.
Saying Blake is overrated because he got hurt a lot is like saying T-Mac was overrated for the same reason. Or Penny Hardaway. Just nonsense.
All I can say, is that the Celtics better hope they don’t get the Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs. They don’t match up well with the Heat. The Celtics playoffs could be – Round 1: Miami; Round 2: Sixers with Embiid or Knicks with a potential full healthy roster; ECF’s: Either the Bucks or Cavs; NBA Finals: Clippers, Nuggets or Wolves. A gauntlet for sure. I don’t think the 1998 Bulls could make it through that lineup of quality teams.
As a Celtics fan, I don’t mind to get the Heat first round.
If the Celts really the best, they should beat any team, so no need to be afraid of anyone. Winning a ring is tough, they have a good chance but we’ll see, it’s on them.
Do you think they really want to play a team that knocked them out last year on their own home court? Heat are a better team this year in my opinion. Jacquez is a very good player. Love is playing well. Spoelstra is a very good coach. A much better coach than Mazzulla.
“Heat are a better team this year in my opinion.”
Did you notice the celtics are better too?
Porzingis and Jrue are about a mile better than smart and the Williams boys.
Do u think KP can have a fully healthy playoff run tho? Celts a whole different team without him
Yes, Kristaps looks pretty healthy to me. And with all our talent and the mix & match Coach Joe is doing, without KP we are still very, very good.
Until the Celtics actually win a title with this team, it’s just potential. Udoka would have beaten the Heat and won the NBA Title with last year’s Celtics.
Udoka would not have beaten Denver, even if he *might* have beaten Miami. No shot. Jokic and Murray were unbeatable together, especially since Gordon could just lock down on Tatum. He did it with everyone else he had to face. Tatum couldn’t score with Andrew Wiggins on him, and Gordon is clearly superior on defense.
Also, by that logic, Miami is just potential also. They haven’t won a title in eleven years and the core of this current squad has gotten two gentlemen’s sweeps in the finals.
YES!!!
I would bet that the entire Celtics lockerroom will want that matchup.
Celtics aren’t winning the crown, anyways. Live by the three-pointer, die by the three-pointer.
Thanks for letting us know man.
Who is going to win?
I appreciate you letting us know all this stuff.
Bro, do you think this guy knows tomorrow’s lottery numbers too?
Unless jokic or Murray get hurt, hard to see how Denver doesn’t repeat. Jokic is arguably better than he’s ever been rn
They do rely on the 3 point shot too much. Looks great when it’s falling. When it’s not, you lose to the Heat in the conference finals at home.
Tatum is 5th or 6th in the league points in the paint, Brown is 9th. Also top 5 defensive side of the ball. The threat of pick and pop 3 from Kristaps and Al when on the court opens up driving lanes. The big guarding these guys must honour KP and Big Al from deep thus taking them away from protecting the rim. Enter two all star wings who are top 10 points in the paint. White has a nice float game too. Jrue is attacking smaller point guards in the post multiple times a game, straight up bullying them. Kristaps has a mid range game too. Lice by the 3 die by the 3 is seriously narrow minded and short sighted.
Last night Celtics won taking only 22 threes, made 5, pretty cold. Jaylen took only 2 threes of 14 shots; made 10 mid-range or closer baskets. 76ers took 42 threes. Celts are learning to win in different ways. 20+ games left to get ready for the Big Show.
Celts “… don’t match up will with the Heat?” I believe we’re 3-0 vs the Heat this year & our players can’t wait to play the Heat.
Well, not me personally but a guy I know. Him and her *got it on*. Wooo-eee!
No, they didn’t.
No, no, no they didn’t. But you could imagine what it’d be like if they did, right…? Everybody on, good, great, grand, wonderful.
No yelling on the bus !
Nah General Soreness is getting old…
The Heat need Rozier to take a leap to beat the Cs…
The Celtics swept the Heat last year in the regular season and lost to the Miami Heat in the playoffs with home court advantage. If not for that miracle shot by Derrick White, the series would have been over sooner.
We heard you the first time lol thanks for the hot take
Yes and this is 2024 and the Celtics traded for Jrue Holiday and Porzingis?
Who have the Heat added?
The only advantage the Heat have is coaching. That is all. Every other position, the Celtics are better and they have home court. As someone said above. Jrue Holiday is NOT Marcus Smart and Porzingis is NOT Rob Williams.
Might want to update your score card.
Embiid-less Sixers need to (1) move the ball more on O, (2) stop collapsing towards the net and leaving 3 pt shooters wide open, and (3) Tobias Harris needs to step up on O and in the middle
