10:13pm: The trade is official, per a press release from the Bucks. Milwaukee acquired the draft rights to Dimitrios Agravanis, the 59th overall pick in 2015, from Sacramento in the deal.
1:59pm: The Bucks are dealing little-used big man Robin Lopez to the Kings along with cash considerations, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports (Twitter links). He’s expected to be waived by Sacramento and become a free agent.
The cost-cutting move by Milwaukee will open up a roster spot and save it $8.6MM in luxury tax penalties. This trade deadline is the last time teams in the second tax apron are allowed to send out cash in trades, ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes (Twitter links).
Lopez was on a veteran’s minimum salary deal, so Sacramento didn’t have to match a salary or use a traded player exception to pull off the deal. The Kings had an open roster spot to make the trade.
Lopez, 35, has appeared in 16 this season, including two starts, but averaged just 4.1 minutes in those appearances.
I hate being a Kings fan
You look like this Chris Jackson fella.
He once was. Formerly
This is the big deal ?? “We are going to bring in a Star Player” ?? Really ?? Well we are not going to make it out of the first round w/ this current roster !! Oh, but we will hear, “Wait til next year” !! Like we haventbeen hearing this for decades !!No more season tickets for me. This is an utter joke !! Slap in the face of all Kings fans !!
FO is happy with a first round playoff exit. Kings aren’t serious about winning and being a contender. Pisses me off.
Kings won’t win a playoff series as long as there are NBA refs lol
What deal should they have made then? There’s no star player that was available that is worth trading for and most/all teams are wary of bringing in a third super-max type player since it basically handicaps them from doing anything to build the roster.
The real question you have to ask “is this Kings roster 1-2 rotation players away from suddenly being a serious contender?” The answer is no. Sure they could get lucky with some hot play and some fortunate injury luck but barring that, at best they’re probably the 5th or 6th best team in the West (Thunder, Nuggets, Clippers, Suns, TWolves). Clearly the front office either thinks this roster is good enough or they don’t think they’re 1-2 role players away, so why trade valuable assets for minor short term upgrades that probably don’t catapult them into the West’s elite teams.
Kuzma for Barnes and a 1st rnd pick and a 2nd rnd pick or 2. Kuzma is taller, scores about the same, better rebounder, shot blocker, and 3 yrs younger than Barnes. I would say that is a good upgrade.
Lopez is good big depth. He’s a rim protector also. 12-16 mins a gm.
He’s about 1500 miles closer to Disneyland. Big day in the Lopez household I’m sure.
For a while there …….
It says they are going to waive him is what is the benefit for the kings? Is it salary cap room? Why would they pay for a player they arent keeping unless there is cap room for it.
Bucks are sending $$$ to cover his remaining salary.
And probably extra $$$ to compensate the Kings for helping them reduce their luxury tax penalties.
Though they don’t give the numbers here it’s probably the same as the Warriors sending Cory Joseph to indiana. The Warriors save 13 million in total so they’re sending Indiana $5 million with Cory Joseph. Everyone wins. Probably the same here.
I hope this doesn’t mess up the chemistry
