Cade Cunningham knows he won’t get more individual accolades until the Pistons turn things around, he told James Edwards III of The Athletic. Cunningham has put up solid stats after missing most of last season due to a shin injury but Detroit has won just eight games.
“With how the league is, we reward winning,” Cunningham said. “People are going to say everything I’m doing is empty and meaningless until I win games. That’s what I plan on doing.”
Cunningham is eligible to sign a rookie scale extension this offseason. He’s averaging 22.2 points and 7.4 assists per game, and it would be a surprise if Detroit doesn’t make a max offer to the 2021 No. 1 pick.
“I don’t do the comparison thing as far as me to these other players. I know that I’m that level of being an All-Star, but I haven’t won enough games. I respect that,” Cunningham said. “I know that once I do that, all the other stuff will come with it.”
We have more from the Central Division:
- Khris Middleton didn’t play in the Bucks’ 21-point victory over Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon but it shouldn’t be long before he returns to the lineup, Eric Nehm of The Athletic tweets. The veteran wing hasn’t played since the All-Star break due to a left ankle sprain. “He’s getting closer. I don’t know if I’m going to say close enough that we could think next game, but he’s getting a lot closer. He’s feeling a lot better,” coach Doc Rivers said.
- Speaking of Rivers, Jamal Collier of ESPN details the coach’s first month since replacing Adrian Griffin as the Bucks‘ head coach. Rivers revealed that he said in a phone conversation with his brother that he felt “full” again after returning from his broadcasting job to the sidelines. “I missed it more than I thought,” Rivers said. “I thought I may not do this again. If the right job [didn’t come up] I wasn’t doing it. … Then the first day … man, I felt like I was at home again. I didn’t know that. I just felt normal. Good. I felt full. You’ve got to be full when you’re working and I felt full.”
- Patrick Williams‘ future is cloudy after word broke that he’ll need season-ending foot surgery. The Bulls forward will be a restricted free agent this offseason unless the front office doesn’t give him a $12.97MM qualifying offer. Williams told The Athletic’s Darnell Mayberry he’s not overly concerned about what the offseason will bring. “I know what I showed when I was healthy this season,” he said. “I think I know who I am as a player and what I’m capable of as a player. So, ‘nervous’ isn’t the word. I’m kind of excited to see what happens. And just ready to get back to playing.”
The PTB in DET need to explain to CC that there are no stars on an 8-win team. Of course, in DET’s current lollipop culture, he might not believe them.
Not sure who CC is but maybe he should talk to Cade Cunningham. Cunningham seems to figured out that’s he not a star until the team starts winning.

LOL. Another post by you reflecting your poor reading skills. No point in responding further.
My poor reading skills? It says what I posted right in the article, anyone with any kind of reading comprehension could see he’s saying he hasn’t earned it yet.
Anyway what the hell does PTB mean, Pulmonary Tuberculosis? Portland Trail Blazers? I think you’re trying to abbreviate Pistons’ Top Brass, but why?
PTB = powers that be.
He’s saying HE needs to get better? Don’t see that. I see that he knows he’s not on the All Star team (he’s not delusional). But he’s pretty clearly saying that he’s been the same level of player (star) as those who are on the All Star team; and it’s just the circumstance that his team hasn’t won enough games. To me, that’s looking down the wrong end of the telescope. While basketball is a team game, an NBA team with any player on the same level as an All Star doesn’t win merely 8 games.
Trae Young straight up for Cade Cunningham …. Who says no???
Detroit 100 out of 100 times, Trae is cool but he’s not fixing any of detroits problems, like how terrible their gm is and also how terrible their coach is and not too mention how terrible their owner is
More likely ATL say no. A proven AS PG who is regularly top2 or 3 in assists and puts up career 26&10, for an unproven inefficient centrepiece of the worst team of the last 4 years is a terrible trade. If it’s for Cade they’ll likely have to offer a couple picks or even more.
I’m not trying to overhype Trae or lowball cades value, but being realistic with the value of both. Young has carried a team to a fairly average playoff history off his own back but still winning basketball, he’s an offensive superstar that fills the stands. His lack of D does not drop his value enough to justify it(even though I agree it’s a huge flaw that without the right players will cost him success).
Cade shows glimpses, but he’s not proven to be a winning player or has the high volume stats to justify him being valuable enough to off set how poor pistons are. Any trade involving Cade will leave Detroit fans disappointed because you value you your own much higher, I love Cades game and hope he either gets out or they fix their issues. But he’s not worth any all star player under 28.
The bulls should just give Pat Will the QO, 13million is not that much and that gives you one more season to see what he can do.
Pats had 4 years, he’s a low volume 3/D role player, AK should be fired for drafting him 4th, Pat plays like he’s just at work there is no love with how soft he plays, he’s had 2 separate seasons ended by injury and has what ten 20 pt games in 4 years, bulls should only send him to CCDOC because he’s robbed the fans
That injury is worse than the Bulls are suggesting. Could go sideways and prevent him from playing again. This is the Bulls’ MO when it comes to injuries, cf. ‘DRose/Lonzo will be back soon season ticket holders’.
My crazy pistons projections:
-Pistons going to give Mikes Bridges the max
-They will win the number 1 pick and trade it to OKC for picks 9 and 12 and a pair of future seconds. OKC selects Alex Sarr and Pistons grab Reed Shepard and Tidjane Salaun.
-I also think Quentin Grimes will win the starting SG job over Ivey and Shepard. He’s just the most ready to compete and contribute to winning. He’s good defensively, doesn’t take too many touches and hits his threes. Ivey continues to remain on the outer and trade noise gets louder.

Sasser Ivey/Sheppard Thompson Salaun …
