Isaiah Hartenstein can expect a huge raise when he becomes a free agent this summer and he hopes it comes from the Knicks, writes Peter Botte of The New York Post. Hartenstein grabbed 15 rebounds Saturday night, the latest in a string of impressive performances since he took over as the team’s starting center following Mitchell Robinson‘s injury. This is Hartenstein’s first extended experience as a starter in his six years in the NBA, and he’s proving he can handle the challenge.
“Yeah, it’s great timing, I can’t lie about that,” Hartenstein said about his upcoming free agency, “but at the end of the day, I love it here in New York. The plan would be to stay, but at the end of the day, you can’t predict what’s going to happen. So you have to just go game-by-game. But I love New York, I love the fans, I think it’s something special. And I love winning, I think that’s the biggest thing.”
After signing Hartenstein to a two-year, $16MM deal in 2022, the Knicks own his Early Bird rights and can go over the salary cap to keep him. However, there’s no guarantee they’ll be willing to make a long-term investment with Robinson already under contract for the next two seasons.
“I feel like in the past I’ve had times where I’ve played minutes like this, but I don’t think it was ever over a consistent two-month span. I guess I’m just proving that I can be a starter in the NBA. I think I’ve done that,” Hartenstein said. “And us still winning is a part of that. I feel like you can be a starter, you can have great stats on a losing team, but it doesn’t really mean much. So just being in that starting role and playing heavy minutes on a winning team, I think that says a lot.”
There’s more from New York:
- Jalen Brunson may be the Knicks’ best point guard since Walt Frazier, but he’s uncomfortable with comparisons to the Hall of Famer, Botte adds in a separate story. Brunson expressed admiration for Frazier, who still has a visible role with the team as a broadcaster. “Whenever I see him. I have to say ‘hi’ to him. I can’t just walk past him because he’s a legend,” Brunson said. “But to be able to see him every day just knowing the presence he brings around this organization, you have to respect him and you have to understand the things that he did as a player are remarkable.”
- Coach Tom Thibobeau wasn’t able to offer an update on OG Anunoby, who missed his fourth straight game Saturday with elbow inflammation, tweets Tim Bontemps of ESPN. Thibodeau said Quentin Grimes is doing more on-court work after suffering a knee sprain, but both players are considered day-to-day (Twitter link).
- During Saturday’s visit to Madison Square Garden, Lakers star LeBron James told reporters that he considered joining the Knicks when he was a free agent in 2010, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN. Although he doesn’t give it any chance of happening, Stefan Bondy of The New York Post makes the case that New York may be a better fit for James than L.A. at this point in his career.
More importantly Bron quickly REconsidered joining the Knicks in 2010 & this goes to show why this guy is one of the best decision makers in NBA history… Jalen Brunson is a college legend & a beast in the league rn but he got miles and kilometers and clicks and leagues to travel before he gets to Walt Frazier level.
NY doesn’t want LBJ now. He rejected us back then, and he can F OFF now.
Lol Im pretty sure he still doesn’t wanna be there. But if he did ever wanna play there then Julius Randle & Fournier & some picks would be on a plane headed west as soon as he signed off lol this is LeBron we’re talking about. Actually Randle alr knows how it goes
Brunson is a example of how a little man who doesn’t get punished physically for hanging around the lane combined with the overall state of officiating and pathetic defense makes today’s nba a joke.
This ain’t mma or prison we don’t need more physical punishments in the NBA. It’s a trip bc I distinctly remember when guys like u were hating on how the game was too physical and there were too many fights and the scores were too low
Walt Frazier and Willis Reed are NY Knicks best players ever. When will Ryan A score his first basket this season?
Patrick Ewing says hello
Patrick can be 3 maybe. What did Patrick do, win them a title… nope. Willis Reed did and Frazier was clutch in those championships. Patrick Ewing the best Knick ever lol
Willis had Frazier, Frazier had Willis. Ewing had nobody. I’m a bulls fan and I saw those NYK teams but Ewing was the franchise, the offense and the defense. It’s a shame that he never had a wing player to take the pressure off him.
I do completely agree with you raz. They were just one elite player away. If Ewing won them he would be imo. It really is to bad but I still have to say Frazier and Willis are ahead of Patrick. It was weird when he left NY for Seattle and Orlando. Like Hakeem in a raptors jersey. Ewing was the man though. I think people do forget about him. It is unfair to say Patrick would dominate Willis, you don’t know that mokak. I do think like you that individual Ewing is better
Plus Frazier and Ewing left NY but Reed didn’t and Reed has that famous walk onto the court to help his team physical and emotionally win the championship
Frazier was traded. He didn’t leave on his own volition.
I’m talking as a player Patrick Ewing would dominate Willis Reed and it’s not even close no he never won a title but doesn’t need to to be a better player than them….Karl Malone never won a title but I’m pretty sure he was a better player than Horace Grant
Ewing was the best. He also went up against a time when centers dominated. Never had that true second option alongside him. Played in the Jordan era, etc. He carried his teams. Reed had Frazier and Monroe.
Reed wasn’t as good as Melo and are we only counting players that had their best years as a Knick? I’m not sure Reed is better than a prime Houston who carried an 8th seed to the finals
Ewing is number one. Frazier and Reed are two and three. Any Knicks fans knows this. Championships are a team effort. Frazier/Reed not only had each other, but DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, Earl the Pearl, etc. Ewing also played in the Jordan era, where greats like Barkley and Stockton and Malone also never won a championship.
Love Frazier and Reed but Ewing is the greatest Knick ever.
100%
It’s close to me. But I’d say Ewing.
Clyde has rings and numbers in those wins. Those we do count, to me.
Without Frazier and Willis then you all would be the Timberwolves. Remember that. Championships are important but you all are stuck on a good center. If Ewing was good as you all claimed then he would of won them a ring. Ewing was not good when it mattered, he needed a good number 2. Frazier and Willis got it done. Remember that people. What you are all saying is like this, Toronto won but Vince Carter is there best player ever or Houston won but Clyde D or Harden is Houston’s best player ever or Dallas won and Luka is there best player ever. You all sound silly
Or the Hawks won once but T Young is there best player ever or Denver won and Carmelo Anthony is there best player ever or Portland won once and Lillard is their best player ever or the 76s Best player is Barkley. You all sound like this and you all are stuck on stars. NY best players are Reed number one, Frazier number 2 and I guess Ewing is 3. Next you all will be trying to tell me Poopin(Pippen) or D Rose is Chicago’s best player ever and not Jordan
Reed played against some of the best centers ever in Kareem, wilt, Lanier Unseld Thurmond Issel el. Ewing played against Hakeem Robinson, Parish. Love Ewing but I give the nod to the captain.
Thank you. At least you understand basketball Ant. They all are stuck on stars and stats casuals lol
I beat Mokak133, Raz,padam, lyman, rct and knickerbockerAI. Damn I am good. Still respect rct thoughts though
No OG is a problem. Get well soon!
I’m sure he’d be playing if it was the playoffs.
I’m not clamouring for LeBron to end up with the Knicks either, but it is interesting the timing of Klutch and Knicks Management working things out. Could be just to bring another suitor back into the Dejounte trade discussions, but we all know James doesn’t do anything unintentionally, and Rich Paul is going to do whatever necessary to keep him happy.
I’d place him 3rd currently. Frazier, Jackson then Brunson. Richardson and Marbury round out my top 5
Marbury over Houston is insane
Houston was a SG
I liked Ray Williams alot. I agree with your list though
The only NYK issue with Hartenstein is whether the EBRs will be sufficient to re-sign him. The NYK will have no issue making the investment in him at the EBR level. When both are healthy, he and Mitch are both 20 + mpg rotation players, so there wouldn’t be an issue paying both.
LBJ is up to what he’s up to. WTH cares. If he considered the NYK it wasn’t in the 2010 offseason. The MIA deal was a done deal long before that. That offseason was theater, nothing more.
The real show was on the streets of Cleveland where people literally burned his jersey in the street
Jalen Brunson is the most non drama NBA player in the league. Dude just hoops and wants to win. So much fun watching him grow and excel. Can’t believe he would be the player he is now, had he remained in Dallas next to Luka.
Go retire Bron ……. we don’t need you in NY.
Laker D stepped up in fourth Q. No Knick stepped up to help Brunson. Knicks missing three starters, it showed last night.
I think Knicks are looking at Murray. Cause even if things don’t work out for the best. He can easily be moved next yr.
Laker gm brought them back to reality.
Man. 6:30 with no buckets with some added o reb stops from la crazy
Ewing would have won a championship if those teams had a player like OG.
